Del Reeves Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 3, 2007.
NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) - Del Reeves, a country music star who sprinkled his performances with humor and hit No. 1 on the country charts in 1965 with the song "Girl on the Billboard," has died. He was 74.

Reeves died Monday, New Year's Day, after an extended illness, Grand Ole Opry theater spokeswoman Jessie Schmidt said Tuesday.

During his 40 years at the Grand Old Opry, he was hailed as one of its best entertainers because of his comic timing. Along with his music, he did impressions of stars such as Jimmy Stewart, Johnny Cash and Walter Brennan.

The Grand Old Opry is a long-running Nashville country music show that evolved from a vaudeville type format to radio broadcast and television, though it still is based on a stage show. Music performances are interspersed with jokes, storytelling, and a cast of recurring archetypal country and western characters.

His "Girl on the Billboard" sold a million copies and earned him the nickname of the Doodle-Oo-Doo-Doo Kid for the nonsense syllables that he sang with the song's guitar intro.

His other hits included "The Belles of Southern Bell," "Women Do Funny Things to Me," "Looking at the World Through a Windshield," "Good Time Charlie's," "Be Glad" and "The Philadelphia Fillies."

"I want to be remembered as a great showman and a nice guy," he told The Associated Press in 1988. "That's all I could hope for."

Reeves became a regular performer on the Opry in 1966, and performed for up to 1 million people a year on the long-running country show.

"I listened on the radio on Saturday nights and it was the ultimate," he said in 1988. "As a child, I told my daddy I was going to sing on the Opry one day. He said, 'Yeah, sure you are.' I kept my goal in mind and in '66 we achieved it."

"He was one of the best entertainers that ever came through the Opry, I think," said Kelso Herston, who signed Reeves to the United Artists label in the 1960s and produced some of his early records, including "Girl on the Billboard." "He was happy-go-lucky. He had a positive attitude and was a great person. A great friend."

Reeves turned to impressions and light material early in his career when he found those more to his liking than ballads.

"I couldn't really sell a ballad," he said. "It had to be material on the lighter side. Under this clown's face, there's a serious guy. But I never got to show it because I got tagged as that clown. I've been clowning as long as I can remember."

In the late 1960s, Reeves had his own syndicated TV show, "The Del Reeves Country Carnival." He also appeared in several movies, including "Sam Whiskey," starring Burt Reynolds and Clint Walker.

He said he was born July 14, 1932, in Sparta, North Carolina, the youngest of 11 children, and was named Franklin Delano Reeves for then-presidential candidate Franklin Roosevelt. He learned to play guitar with his mother's help and was playing a regular gig on a local radio show by age 12.

He attended Appalachian State College in Boone, North Carolina, and served in the Air Force, performing and writing songs while stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California. He was regarded as a rising singer-songwriter by the time he moved from California to Nashville in 1962.

In the early 1990s, he promoted the emerging career of singer Billy Ray Cyrus. The arrangement ended up in court with Reeves suing for damages. The matter was settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.

I can remember the old truck driving song as a child growing up around the trucking business and later on a professional driver his songs road along with me over the miles. I still pull up songs and videos occasionally which put a smile on my face. Thanks Del for your talent and humor. Rest in peace.

I still miss Del. We never finished the work we began in the 1980s and 90s. His focus was shifted toward Billy Ray. The times I had with him, Kerry, and Walt Trott are some that I treasure dearly. R.I.P. ole friend.

People close to Del may remember him going down to Orlando to do TV with Mike. We did the shopping shows, recorded a couple concerts and did some interview stuff as well. Always a bright spot in my life when Del would come around. Glad I ran into this link and will always have nothing but the fondest of memories. Doodle Doo Doo Doo, RIP ole buddy Del.

I met Del in early 1982, in Tavernier, Fl. on a dock in a marina. Several of us were playing guitars and singing, and I thought he looked sort of familiar. He liked what I was doing, so he said: "Son, that's some nice stuff you're doing there, but around here, you better do some Jimmy Buffett, or you and your guitar might end up in the water."

After we all got done laughing, I played three Buffet songs in a row, and he kindly said "Just keep doing what you're doing son. You are never going to go hungry." Later, after he left, I found out who he was. One of the nicer musicians I have ever met, and wasn't in the least bit "full of himself".

I had the honor of playing lead guitar for Del for a few years. We had more fun than anyone could imagine. We both ate so many hotdogs in New York one time I thought we'd bust. We'd have a few cocktails and sit in the steps of the bus and listen to our old favorite country songs and cry like babies. He kept us entertained on the bus with his Western Movie that he did with his imitations. I can truly say that Del was a great friend to me, and a really nice guy, but most of all in my whole career I had the most fun with Del, and I will miss him every day till we meet again. R.I.P. For Del...

Your number one hit Girl On
A Billbord was a classic.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I met Del when he was hosting the Midnight Jamboree, for Justin Tubb. When the show was over my husband and I introduced ourselves and mentioned that his daughter Kari and his band THE GOOD TIME CHARLIES were guests at the motel we managed. He said, "Why didn't you say somethin' earlier? I would have plugged the motel for you."

I have a picture of me and Del taken backstage at the Opry that I will always treasure.

I heard "girl on the billboard" on xm radio (roadhouse). I instantly went to youtube to see more of DEl. I never had the chance to listen when he was alive and wish that I could have gone to a show. His video of Girl on the billboard makes me smile every single time I watch it and we love TRYING to sing along. What a talent that county music has lost with his passing. Thanks goes out to Del for giving us timeless music.

I grew up being around the Reeves family. They all are wonderful people. It's a shame I don't get to see them especially since we live in the same county. Bethany and I were friends throughout school, so we spent time staying at each others house. We use to have so much fun! Poor Anne and Kari they had to put up with us little brats. Ellen always made me feel at home as did Del when he was home. He worked a lot so I didn't see him as often, but when he was home he would always make me laugh. I really do miss all of you, hope everyone is doing well. Del will always be remembered by me and my family. Love all of you.

It's been almost a year since Del's passing. Officially January 1, 2007. I remember listening to Del every weekend on the Grand Ole Opry. I'm 31 and so my memories of Del all center around his appearances on the Opry. I first heard Del on the Opry in 1995 or 1996. He was usually on the Jeannie Seeley portion or on Porter's segment. Del would often do his comedy impressions...at times he would have on a Waylon Jennings vocal impersonator and Del would play the part of Willie Nelson and they'd sing "Luchenbach, Texas". The Johnny Cash impressions were always wonderful as well...the Cash impersonations often led into Del performing, as Johnny Cash, the song "I Would Like To See You Again".

Greetings from Sparta, N. C., the birthplace of Del. Del was my father's youngest sibling, and each year that Del came home for his Scholarship Benefit performance, I was privileged to host a meal for dad, Del and the "Good Time Charlies", and any other friends and family that always seemed to be at his heels each time he came home. What wonderful memories I have of going home in the afternoon and finding Del and dad sitting at my kitchen table with a spoon eating from an opened quart jar of homemade sauerkraut. Del's comment was "it is the best medicine I know of for a tired voice or sore throat".(He always managed to take a jar or two home with him) Sparta is paying tribute to and honoring Del via two different fall festival events and shows during September and October. As Del's niece, I am proud to be a part of these events and grateful to all persons responsible for making them happen. We will forever miss his physical presence but are so thankful that he will forever remain with us through his contributions to the music and entertainment industry. What a performer he was!!!!!!!!!!

I First Saw Del when I was around 12 yrs. old at the Berrien County Youth Fair, In Berrien Springs MI. The second time I was on Leave from the Army and was at a Moose Club in Buchanan Michigan sometime in the Mid-80's. Del was preparing to go on stage when I had the opportunity to speak with him. I told him that I was in the Army an had just returned from an assignment in Korea. I told him that the juke boxes in korea still played Girl on the Billboard, and other records of his. He was surprised to here that, shook my hand, and thanked me for my service. He then went on to perform a great show. My family always wathched his TV show, and enjoyed seeing him on others. I've seen a lot of Country Stars in my life, and he has always been my favorite. He was very talented. I would like to express my deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Del was responsible for my penchant for putting humorous songs in my show. One of the first albums I bought was his Live album with all his impressions of Grandpa Amos McCoy, Hank Snow, and Johnny Cash, among others. He was a master showman in my opinion, and watching his 30 minute Del Reeves show back in the early 70's was a high point in my week.
