Tige Andrews Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 7, 2007.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Tige Andrews, the Emmy-nominated character actor who portrayed a police captain in charge of a trio of hip, young crime fighters in "The Mod Squad," has died. He was 86.

Andrews died Jan. 27 of cardiac arrest at his home in the San Fernando Valley, his family said.

The actor often played detectives during his television career, which spanned five decades and included appearances on more than 60 shows. His daughter said he was proud of his stint as Capt. Adam Greer on "The Mod Squad," which aired during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The popular TV drama starred three young actors - Clarence Williams III, Michael Cole and Peggy Lipton.

"He felt the show made a big difference because it was one of the first television series to address social issues such as drugs, prostitution and teen pregnancy that were more hush-hush before that time," said Barbara Andrews, one of the actor's six children.

Tiger Andrews was born March 19, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y. His parents, following Syrian custom, named him after a strong animal to ensure good health for their son, his family said.

His mother died when he was 3, and his father, who ran a fruit stand, later remarried. Andrews was wounded while serving in the Army during World War II and, after returning home, graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.

In 1955, Andrews appeared in the off-Broadway revival of "The Threepenny Opera." Later that year, director John Ford cast him in the film version of "Mister Roberts" after seeing his Broadway performance. Family members said Ford was a major influence on Andrews.

The actor's wife of 46 years, Norma Thornton, died in 1996.

I always enjoyed Tige in several TV programs. I regret the lateness of these comments. I worked for a while with his son Steve. I was working at Rockwell's data center in Seal Beach. Steve was an IBM CE (Customer Engineer). We both lived in Huntington Beach and would see each other at our local Pavillion's market. We wore ties at the data center. Steve had imparted to me that he wanted to go to work for the FBI. He liked the way my tie was tied and asked if I could show him how I tied it, of course I did. Tonight I am watching your father as a Klingon on Star Trek, another wonderful performance by Tige. If the Heavens ever need a good character, they certainly have one. RIP Mr Andrews

On this day July 12, 1973, you came to my father's funeral and came back to the family area to personally console us. My father knew you through business (banking) and spoke very fondly of you. I will never forget your kindness on that incredibly sad day for us, when you took time out of your day to come to honor my father. Today is the 45th anniversary of my father's funeral - but it could have been yesterday. God Bless You Tige Andrews and may you Rest in Eternal Peace.

It is unfortunate being that I was born in 75' so I wasn't lucky enough to see Tiges' performances when they were originally done. I grew up in the 1980's watching reruns of a lot of his great works. It is very sad that he has passed on. I had never seen a performance by him that I didn't like. As someone had posted earlier about his rolo on the Star Trek TOS episode "Fridays Child" as the klingon "Kras" was powerful and riveting. To sum it up as long as we remember him he never really be gone-may god bless him and his family

Because of Youtube, home video and other media, Mr. Andrews may well be finding new fans to his work; I know for a fact that my son discovered "The Mod Squad" through MeTv, and I explained to him that this was THE show in the early 1970s' for teens my age. I remember thinking that Mr. Andrews' character, Captain Greer, was such an important part of the series...and of course, I've seen him through the years in other acting work. Although this is very belated, I send my condolences to the Andrews family, and I hope that somewhere, Tige is looking down at us and seeing that he is remembered by his many fans.

Was just waching an episode of Big Valley and saw his familiar face. i had to rack my brain to recollect who he was behind a big ole mustache and a greek accent. i finally came up with remembering him as "the captain" Captain Adam Greer on the Mod Sqaud. So i really became curious and looked him up on imdb where i learned he'd passes several years ago. sorry he's gone but he has has left great legacy behind on tv, most notably and for me especially his role on the mod sqaud. i absolutely loved that show. i was a teen in the 70's and i could really relate to the young characters and how captain greer related to them. back then that show was really must see tv. hope tige is truely resting in peace. my belated condolences to the andrew family. take care and god bless.

Thank you for your time with us Tige, and for your great name. I love telling friends how my mother watched TV just during the time when actor names were read for The Mod Squad. That way so she could pronounce "Tige" properly before naming me after you. You will be missed, but not forgotten. My condolences to your family.

I just learned of Tige Andrews passing and I am terribly sadden - my best friend Kathy and I use to watch "Mod Squad” every week and later the re-runs. In fact, Kathy named her cat “Linc”.
The maddest that I ever got at a TV show – was an episode of “Mod Squad” where some young kids were rocking the trailer of an elderly lady. Kathy had to remind me “It is just a TV show!!”. But Tige and the other members of the squad – Julie – Linc and Pete made the show seem so real.
To the Andrews family – I and my friend, Kathy Waxler, would like to offer our deepest condolences and prayers and thank you for the time that you shared Tige with the rest of us.

For Tige...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.
