Kevin Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 23, 2007.
PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Navy Blue Angels were back home Monday to regroup and mourn the loss of one of their pilots, killed in a crash while performing in one of his first air shows with the team.

Witnesses said the plane clipped a stand of pine trees before it went down in a South Carolina neighborhood Saturday. Investigators were still examining the wreckage, and the Navy said it could be three weeks or more before it announces what caused of the crash.

At the Pensacola Naval Air Station, Lt. Cmdr. Kevin J. Davis's parking space was turned into a makeshift memorial with flowers and posters remembering the 32-year-old pilot.

One poster read: "We will always remember No. 6." A small note said: "God bless your soul. Fly high Blue Angel."

Davis was from Pittsfield, Mass., and was in his second year with the Blue Angels, the team known for its high-speed, aerobatic demonstrations, said Lt. Cmdr. Garrett Kasper.

The rest of his squadron decided not to participate in a weekend airshow in Vidalia, Ga., and returned home to tearful reunion with family members late Sunday, Kasper said.

Earlier, at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in South Carolina, the site of the crash, a somber crowd watched as six jets flew overhead in formation. Smoke streamed behind one of the jets as it peeled away from the others to complete the "missing man formation," the traditional salute for a lost military aviator.

"The spirit of the pilot is in the arms of a loving God," said Rob Reider, a minister who was the announcer for the air show.

The crash happened as the team was performing its final maneuver. The six pilots were joining from behind the crowd of thousands to form a triangle shape known as a delta, but Davis' jet did not join the formation.

Moments later, it crashed just outside Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, hitting homes in a neighborhood about 35 miles northwest of Hilton Head Island, S.C.

"It was just taking pine trees and just clipping them," said Raymond Voegeli, a 37-year-old plumber whose truck was showered in flaming debris.

Eight people on the ground were injured, and some homes were damaged as debris rained drown. Authorities have said none of the injuries on the ground appeared to be life threatening.

Davis, a decorated pilot who joined the Blue Angels in 2005, had previously served as a narrator for the air shows, Reider said. He also handled celebrity flights, and flew with stars such as singer Kelly Clarkson and actor James Franco.

The squadron's six, F/A-18 Hornets routinely streak low before air shows that draw crowds of thousands. The pilots, among the Navy's most elite, are so thoroughly trained and their routines so practiced that deadly crashes are rare; the last was in 1999.

Ernie Christensen, a retired rear admiral and former Vietnam fighter pilot who flew with the Blue Angels and later commanded the Navy's Top Gun fighter school in California, said he did not want to speculate about what could have caused the crash. But he said the intense flying leaves no room for human or mechanical error.

"When you are working at high speeds, close to the ground and in close proximity to other aircraft, the environment is extremely unforgiving. That is the reason they practice so many thousands of times," Christensen said.

The last fatal Blue Angel crash was in 1999, when a pilot and crewmate died while practicing at a base in Georgia. Saturday's crash was the 26th fatality in the team's 60-year history.

I just saw the Blue Angels for my first time at the Beaufort, SC Air Station two weeks ago. I grew up watching the Thunderbirds and it was so amazing to finally get to watch the Blue Angels! I heard of the unfortunate incident about Lt Cmdr Kevin Davis and it was so sad to be at the place of his final show. How proud his family must be of his incredible accomplishments and the fact that he was one of the very few chosen members to fly with the Blue Angels. I wish I could have met him and had seen him fly! May his memory last on and May God Bless his family!

Time seems to fly by so quickly. I remember Kevin's death like it was yesterday. I was at the airshow when it happened. Although I never met Kevin, his death inspired me.

We all hoped that the Blues would never have another loss, especially one of Kevin's magnitude. Unfortunately, this year, another Angel earned its wings in heaven.

Jeff and Kevin are most likely flying together, with their wings. The wings of an angel.

I was at the show, Even though I didn't know him, it felt like I did. This year marks the 7 year mark after the crash, and I just feel awful for his family and friends. He's in a great place now, fly on No.6

"“Kids,
enjoy being young while you're young and always keep your dreams close at heart because sooner or later
you're gonna be living that dream just like I am. It seems like yesterday, I was a little kid dreaming about the
job that I have right now and I wake up today and I find myself in the best job I could possibly imagine as a
Naval Aviator and as a Blue Angel.”

This is just so sad. I did not know Kevin but he seemed like a wonderful person. By watching videos I can tell he loved flying that jet, loved his country. I lost my brother in 1975, he was killed in a Army helicopter crash, I know the pain and loss his family feels. The pain and loss is always there but I hope time has eased some of the pain his family has gone through. Loving thoughts and prayers for Kevins family, friends and fellow pilots.

In my years of attending Air Shows at Quonsit Point in RI, I have always remembered the Blue Angels the most. Their many techniques and expertise excited their fans and we have enjoyed it for years. Just recently I was viewing other planes on UTube and just happened to fall upon the accident in April of 2007 where one man was lost. This year's show was different. The Blue Angels were not there but I had no idea why. I am saddened to find out that we lost one of our angels. I hope he is still flying in heaven beside all the other angels up there. I want to give my deepest sympathies to his family and friends. May he RIP.

As I made the 3 day drive from MA to Pensacola to say goodbye...I could not belive what I was doing. Dylan wanted to see his hero one more time and my husband a wreak over the loss of a great friend. At the end of the service as you were carried out of the church my Kevin finally gave in to the tears...Dylan wrapped his arms around his daddy's legs and said..."Its ok daddy...I still love you." Not quite a year later my little boy Dylan (4) still is asking for you. You were a dear friend to my husband and I, but to my son you were larger than life. No matter how busy your life became...you always seemed to find the time to drop us a line. We all miss you so much. I never had a chance to tell you Thank you for helping my Kevin in his naval career. My son drew you a picture...we will forward it to the team...I know it will put a smile on their face too...just as it would yours as you would hang it in your office waiting for the new masterpiece. We will always love you and always miss you. God Bless Kevin...see you in heaven someday. Love the Thomson Family

I live in Beaufort, S.C. only 20 minutes away from where Kevin was taken away from us on that tragic day in April of 2007. I will never forget the moment it happened and how everything just stopped. I could not even comprehend what I had just seen in the sky and heard, and still cannot comprehend it to this day. I think of our hero everyday here in Beaufort, especially when I ride past the air station or hear the jets practicing over my house. I love the sound! I love the noise! Some days I will just get in my car and ride by the crash site, just to say hello and pray. I would do anything in this world to bring him back. Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Davis, you are missed more and more every day! You are a true hero! My sympathy and prays go out to you and your family, today and always.

I have long dreamed of being a jet pilot. My love for aviation took me to a Blue Angel demonstration when I was a young child. Ever since that day I was captivated and in awe of the things those men could do, they were my hero's. Even now as an adult, I admire the hard work and discipline that it takes to master the skills the Blue Angels possess. Even though I never had the privilege of knowing Mr. Davis, I am sadden for the loss of a great aviator. My prayers are with his family and the love one's lives he touched.

The city of San Diego is a military town and everyone has felt the loss of an outstanding pilot, noble officer, and most importantly great man. It is the third week anniversary of a fallen hero and I still can't believe it. The Blue Angels returned to the skies for their first show since this tragic event and can't help but still watch with a very heavy heart. God bless you, Ltcd. Davis.

I am a Navy Vet who had the good fortune to share some memories with the Blue Angels Team of 1957/1958 and a great bunch of Guys. I did not have the pleasure of knowing Kevin, although I wish I had, but I know Kevin was made of the stuff that all past Blue Angels were made of and I know everyone who does know him are proud of him. Many Pilots have given their lives for Country and the Navy. Kevin was one of those brave individuals. I know with out a doubt, Kevin loved what he was doing and knew the risks he was taking. But he did it anyway! Men like Kevin are a rare breed; they take life by the horns and live it to the fullest.

Kevin may no longer be among us physically, but he will always live on in our memories. Kevin is truly a hero because of what he believed in and how he lived. I will not tell you how he died, I will tell you how he lived!

To those of his family and close friends, I mourn your loss as does all of America. May God bless and keep Kevin and may he also watch over Kevins family.

To those who may be interested, I have a website dedicated to the Blue Angels and have placed a small tribute to Kevin on it. Small only due to the limited information I have.

My sincerest condolences

My family and I were able to see the Blue Angels practice 3 weeks ago in Pensecola. After the practice, we went to the museum. There, we saw all the pilots and got to meet Kevin. Even though there were hundreds of people there, wanting his autograph, he took time out to talk with my 12 year old son (who wants to be a pilot) as well as my daughter (age 6). I was honestly very impressed with his kindness and humility. When we heard about the crash we had a gut feeling it was Kevin's plane. It broke our hearts. My son was really torn up about it. May God truly bless your family during this difficult time and may his unbelievable love consume you. I am so, so sorry for your loss.

Thank you for all you do.

Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the Davis Family. As a former Navy veteran, I've attended numerous Blue Angels "Air Shows". I and others were always proud of their performances, precision flying and coordination.

LDCR Davis you will be missed. My family and friends thank you for giving us and others your very best as a member of the most elite command.

May you rest in peace among all the Angels.

I was fortunate to meet Kevin last year when I attended a private reception following the Blue Angels performance at NAS Atlanta. I spent several minutes talking with Kevin and enjoyed that brief exchange very much. Kevin had a strong resemblance to my own son in looks and mannerisms and I was especially devastated when I heard the tragic news of the accident. What a fine son you raised, Mr. and Mrs. Davis. My prayers are with you and know that God is holding you close in His loving arms.

I will always remember Kevin well and with happiness, as a man of honor and a great pilot.

May god bless your soul, Blue Six.
