Josh Hancock Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 29, 2007.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals are mourning a teammate for the second time in five years, and it isn't any easier this time. Josh Hancock, a relief pitcher who helped the team win the World Series last season, died early Sunday when his sport utility vehicle slammed into the back of a tow truck, bringing back painful memories of Darryl Kile's death in June 2002.

"There's a big hole that's going to be there," St. Louis manager Tony La Russa said. "This is brutal to go through."

The Cardinals postponed their home game Sunday night against the Chicago Cubs. La Russa informed Hancock's family of the accident.

"What words can you give somebody in a situation like this?" Cubs manager Lou Piniella said.

Police said the 29-year-old Hancock was alone in his 2007 Ford Explorer when the SUV struck the rear of a flatbed tow truck at 12:35 a.m. The tow truck was in the left lane with its lights flashing while assisting another car that had crashed, Police Chief Joe Mokwa said.

Hancock died upon impact, Mokwa said. The driver of the tow truck, whose name was not released by police, was in the truck at the time of the crash but was not injured. Mokwa said the truck driver saw Hancock's SUV swerve just before it hit the tow truck.

Mokwa said it appeared Hancock was driving at or just above the speed limit, and there were no alcohol containers in his vehicle.

"We may never know what occurred," Mokwa said. "It appears that he just merely didn't see the tow truck."

The medical examiner's office said an autopsy had been scheduled. Services were planned for Thursday in Tupelo, Miss., where Hancock's family lives. Hancock was single.

"All of baseball today mourns the tragic and untimely death of St. Louis pitcher Josh Hancock," baseball commissioner Bud Selig said. "He was a fine young pitcher who played an important role on last year's World Series championship team."

The Cardinals will wear patches with Hancock's No. 32 on their sleeves for the rest of the season. The team also planned a memorial for the bullpen, which already features a tribute to Kile.

A Cardinals-Cubs game also was postponed five years ago after Kile was found dead in his hotel room in Chicago. The 33-year-old pitcher died of a coronary artery blockage.

General manager Walt Jocketty said the Cardinals, who are off Thursday, plan to charter a plane to Hancock's funeral. The team begins a three-game series in Milwaukee on Monday and returns to St. Louis on Friday.

"Obviously, this is very difficult for all of us, especially those of us who were here five years ago when we lost Darryl Kile," said Jocketty, his eyes red. "There's no way we could have played tonight's game."

La Russa met with players shortly before a news conference Sunday afternoon to provide details of the accident and share memories. Late in the afternoon, two Cardinals jogged together in the outfield in a nearly empty Busch Stadium.

"This has obviously been a very difficult time," St. Louis pitcher Braden Looper said. "Josh was a great teammate and a great friend to everybody, and he was a key part of our success."

News of Hancock's death began to circulate around the majors on Sunday morning. Seattle Mariners pitcher Jeff Weaver, who won the World Series clincher for St. Louis in October, got a call from Cardinals reliever Randy Flores.

"I never really had a phone call like that before. It's kind of mind-boggling. Just a few days ago I had talked to him on the phone, touching base again because we were pretty good friends at the time," Weaver said. "We spent a lot of time together. It was just hard to believe."

Weaver said Hancock called him three or four days ago just to chat, and asked if Weaver had received his World Series ring yet.

"He was quiet, kind of soft-spoken, but definitely a good guy," said Brewers pitcher Jeff Suppan, the NL championship series MVP with St. Louis last year. "It's a sad day. Your feelings go out toward his family and his teammates now. That's tough to get through."

Atlanta Braves ace Tim Hudson played with Hancock at Auburn. They helped lead the school to the 1997 College World Series.

"It feels like being punched in the stomach right now," Hudson said. "Josh was such a good person. I saw him a few times a year going back to Auburn for football games. It's really a shock."

Hancock was remembered at ballparks around the country. The Cleveland Indians observed a moment of silence before their game against the Baltimore Orioles, with Hancock's picture displayed on a giant scoreboard. There also was a moment of silence for Hancock at Yankee Stadium.

"It's terrible, another terrible event," said Rockies manager Clint Hurdle, who was the Colorado hitting coach when Kile was a part of the Rockies' staff in 1998 and 1999. "The young man had done so well last fall and had a promising career. It's just terrible."

Hancock, who pitched three innings of relief in Saturday's 8-1 loss to the Cubs, played for four major league clubs. He went 3-3 with a 4.09 ERA in 62 regular-season appearances for the Cardinals last season and pitched in three postseason games. He was 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA in eight games this season.

La Russa said Hancock's final outing was typical of a reliever whose role frequently called for mop-up duty.

"We didn't get embarrassed because of him, and that was said several times," La Russa said.

Three days before Hancock's death, the Cardinals got a scare that some teammates said reminded them of Kile - Hancock overslept and showed up late for a day game in St. Louis. Hancock told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he thought the starting time was later and didn't get up until the "20th call" from anxious teammates.

"We were all a little nervous," closer Jason Isringhausen said earlier this week. "We don't care if you're late. That happens. We want to know that you're OK."

Hancock made his offseason home in St. Louis. He was the only player to attend the premiere of a DVD documenting the Cardinals' unlikely run to their 10th World Series championship after winning only 83 regular-season games.

Hancock joined the Cardinals in spring training last season after Cincinnati released him for violating a weight clause in his contract. He had been a starter the previous year with the Reds, but missed 133 games because of groin and elbow injuries. He also pitched for Boston and Philadelphia.

MEMORY ETERNAL!

May 26, 2009

I know they say time heals all wounds, but when you left this world, it changed things forever. I am so thankful for the time I had to get to know you and you will forever own a piece of my heart. I miss your mischevious grin, your boyish smile and most of all not knowing what you were going to do next. I hope you are still causing trouble and making people smile...while wearing purple..I mean PLUM shirts. You are missed greatly.

I watched Josh pitch his only year as a college player at Auburn. He was the top prospect in Alabama and Mississippi, but decided to give college ball a try. It was obvious he was a major talent. My sympathy goes out to his family and friends. A tragic loss at such a young age.

To the Hancock family,
I didn't know Josh but as a Cardinal fan, I feel that I did. When you watch these guys play 166 games each year you feel that you know them. I am so sorry for your loss. He was taken from us much too soon and will be greatly missed by family, friends, team mates and fans. You must have been very proud of his accomplishments. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to you.

I have been a Cardinals fan for a long time. After the World Series Win, I was thrilled at the chance to meet some of the players at Powell Symphony Hall for the World Series DVD release. No one knew what players would show up. We all have our favorites, and after waiting for what seemed like an eternity, FINALLY, a player arrived. It was Josh Hancock. The only player to show up. We spoke to him, told him what a great player he was, shook his hand and I asked if he would mind signing my sweatshirt. I have worn that shirt soooo many times, but now it is all the more special with Josh Hancock's autograph on the right shoulder. What a special night for the fans, and what a great person, teammate, friend, son and brother. God will carry you through this.
I lost my little brother almost 12 years ago, at the age of 23 in a car wreck. Let your memories carry you and know that God has a special place for Josh. He's in good company with DK and Jack Buck.
Thank you for the memories and may you rest in peace.

To the Hancock Family,
I bartend near the stadium and met Josh last season after a game. He was quick with wit and extremely down to earth. He was quick to take pics and strike up a convo. I too have lost a brother in an accident and I know the pain. I just wanted to write on here and express my deepest condolences and support to your family at this time. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life’s routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family, friends, and the lives that Josh touched.

Mr and Mrs. Hancock,

I did not know your son, but I know the pain you are feeling at this time. I, too, lost my son in August of 2006 at the age of 21.

I am so, so sorry for your loss. I only hope that you let your memories of him and God comfort you at this time in your life.

He will live forever within you. Look to God every day and He will help you through this horrific time.

God bless Josh and your family.

To the Hancock Family,
I did not know your son and brother but as a memeber of Cardinal Nation he was family. I got the best gift to see him pitch in what would be his final ballgame on Sat. 4/28. He was an excellent pitcher but he was more than that he was a son and brother first as well as a 29 year old young man taken away to soon. He will be deeply missed to the city of St.Louis and fans of the cardianls as well as by myself. I only wish I could have been able to know him personally because from all I have heard he had a great sense of humor.
Hopefully this will help in your time of sorrow although from personal experience when a loved one is taken away at an all to early age words do not always help but know others share in your pain
"It's only for a time that we must part with Josh, so bless the memories within in your heart." I know I will bless the memories of the game on 4/28 and his helping us win a World Series and seeing him recieve his ring. #32 wil forever be in my heart and the hearts of Cardinal Nation.
God Bless you and your Family and most of all
God Bless Josh!

Dean, Betty, Jon Jon and Katie...what can I say that hasn't already been said. Our daughters were friends when you lived here in Vestavia and remain friends today. How many times did we meet halfway between Birmingham and Tupelo to exchange Julie or Katie to spend the weekend together? When we would take Katie to Auburn for football games Josh would always come by our camper to see her and eat a hot dog or burger with us. The 1997 Auburn team he played with is a special bunch. Whenever I would see Tim Hudson while he was with Oakland he would always update me on Josh and his advancement through the minor leagues. I lost my father about this time last year. Tim Hudson described it best about the news of Josh's accident. He said he felt as if someone had punched him in the stomach. When I saw the report on ESPN Sunday morning I ran to the den where my son Drew was and told him. Even though he was too young to remember much about Josh when you lived here he still kept up with him. We last saw him in a spring training game in 2004 when he was with the Phillies. He seemed so happy to see someone from back home. I have photos of Katie playing with Drew when he was just 3 or 4. She always loved him and was the only one of Julie's friends who would rather play with Drew than the other girls at the house. Josh being gone just doesn't make sense nor does it seem real.

To Josh's beloved family, please know that our constant prayers are with you as you mourn Josh's passing - we pray that you be comforted by your memories of Josh's rich and joyous life. Josh's Grandmother Mary proudly kept her Virginia family current of Josh's many successes, and we had the privilege of visiting with Josh over the years when he came to town to play the Richmond Braves and in Spring Training. We thank you for sharing your son, brother, and grandson with us.

To Josh's baseball fans, we wanted to share with you a few brief thoughts of Josh. Josh impressed us as so kind, so genuine, and so very gracious - a human being first, a Major Leaguer second.
During lunch one time he looked straight in the eyes of his then 12 and 14 year old baseball player cousins and encouraged them to continue to work hard at school. He told the boys to love and lookout for each other - telling them of his great love for his own siblings. A couple of nights later, we were Josh's guests at a Norfolk game - Josh was masterful, a 2 or 3 hitter over 7 innings. After the game he was critical of his pitching, finding fault in a number of his pitches - but Josh modestly confessed to being pleased with his 3 ABs, not having struck out (3 groundouts to the 2nd baseman and moving up at least one baserunner). Yes, Josh was the consummate professional, always striving to improve, always seeking perfection. And yes, we agree with all these tribute posts about Josh's generousity with his time and patience with his fans. Josh was a delight to his many fans - indeed he makes us so proud. And hearing from his fans about their warm memories of Josh puts smiles on our faces.

Our memories of Josh transcend baseball - we celebrate his life by remembering a fine, God-fearing young man committed to his family and to making all those around him better, kinder persons. We thank Josh for that, and we are grateful to know that he positively touched so many other lives.

Blessings.

Man, he was one of the main contributers to the Cardinal's winning the World Series last year. Once agian, my heart goes out to Josh's family and the Card's. I leave the words that stay above my desk to refer to every day...
When trials assail me and all seems to fail, You give me hope. You are my light shining through the darkness. You are my song, my inner peace and joy. All it takes from me is to switch my focus from the catastrophes to You and Your precious promises.
God be with you all!

To the Hancock family, even though I do not know you all, I what to send my prayers to you and the Cardinal Nation for there lost. I was fortinate enough the attend the autograph night last year at Busch Staduim which Josh appeared in. Josh autographed a cardinal car I bought at the stadium for my brother and I also got his autograph on a MLB baseball. When I heard about Josh if felt like I lost a family member. I am a die-hard cardinal fan who is in the process of making a Cardinals scrapbook of everything. I have stayed up these last four nights crying because of the sad stories in the newspaper about Josh and how great of a person he was. I just wish I would have gotten a individual picture of him so I could put it in the scrapbook with everything else.

Perhaps they are not
stars in the sky,
but rather openings
where our loved ones
shine down
to let us know they
are happy.

I never met Josh, but I do know how proud his gran-dad Pete was of him as he talked to me often about him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

My condolences go out to The Hancock Family and the entire Cardinal Nation. I come from a long line of Cardinal fans, and I'm currently raising one of the biggest Cardinals fans I've ever met. She said a prayer for Josh and his family when she heard the news. We are all very saddened by this sudden loss. It truly is like losing a member of our own family.

I am utterly devastated about Josh's
death, he was such a strong pitcher,
one of the best. He was a wonderful person, inside and out, and I will always remember him. My prayers and
thoughts go to his mom and dad, plus
his family. I am so deeply sorry for
your loss, Josh will be missed for sure. He was a wonderful man, it's tragic that he was suddenly taken from us, at 29 years old. I'll miss him alot. God Speed Josh.

Josh, please give my daughter, Kristi, a hug for me. She was killed in a wreck on her way home from a Cardinal game in 2001. We love and miss her so much.
To Josh's parents: Take one breath at a time, and one step at a time. Realize your grief is normal, whatever route or how long it takes. If it is a comfort, know that others do know how you feel. Accept that your family will never be the same, but you will go on as a family, and he will never be forgotten. Rely on your loved ones-they want to do something to help you. Our family and your family will have a lot of questions for God when we meet. Sending prayers your way.
