Kevin Mitchell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 1, 2007.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Former NFL linebacker Kevin Mitchell has died. He was 36.

Mitchell died overnight Sunday in his sleep at his home in Ashburn, near the Washington Redskins' training facility, according to the team. An autopsy was performed Monday by the Virginia state medical examiner's office. The cause of death was not immediately announced.

Mitchell was drafted in the second round out of Syracuse in 1994 by the San Francisco 49ers, who moved the undersized college defensive lineman to linebacker.

Mitchell played with San Francisco until 1997, then signed with New Orleans (1998-99). He played his final four seasons (2000-03) with the Redskins.

My name is Maria Frisby. I am a great niece of the late Oliver (Sonny) Evans. My condolences are with all of the family. I was here thinking about Kevin today. I was told that Kevin was my late Uncle Oliver (Sonny) Evans son and my cousin a long time ago. I heard that Kevin was a lovely person. I wish that I could have met Kevin. I know that he is with the Lord in heaven. We will all be together with our loved ones again some day.

I only met Kevin Mitchell twice. In that short time you really got the sense that he was a confident and happy individual.I was really good friends with his brother chris. Who i've tried to get in contact with for over 6 or 7 years. It's a shame we come in contact over such a tragedy. My deepest condolences to Chris and Mrs. Mitchell who I never met. I know she loved her boys and my heart hurts for her and chris. Kevin Mitchell R.I.P. SINCERLY JIMMY PAPEIKA 44

Dear Gloria and Chris,

Still, I can see Kevin's face; he always sat and listened when we were in conversation. He promised me, no matter what that he would get his DEGREE and not get swallowed up by the hype of being a football player. He kept his promise, and I always celebrated that achievement for him in my heart and soul. Kevin has a very special place in our memories.

He is with God now; One day, we shall see him again. Our prayers are with you, Chris and Denise and their precious children. Take care of yourselves and be very gentle with yourselves.

I'm so sorry about the passing of Kevin. I've been thinking about you and your family. It hasn't been the same at work without you to talk sports with. Take the time you need but know you have many friends at Milestones who are keeping you in their prayers.
Talk to you soon,

To: Gloria and Family

Gloria, this is your childhood friend, Carol. There are so many things I could write, but it would take too many pages to put all my thoughts down. I just want you to know that a day has not gone by since your Kevin left this earth that I haven't thought about you and your family. I just want you to know that I love you, and even though we haven't seen each other in about 10 years, you are still the best friends I have ever had. When you hurt, I hurt. To quote a few words I once heard: ""We loved him, yes we loved him, but God loved him more. He has swiftly called him to yonder's shining shore. The golden gates were opened, a gentle voice said come. And, with farewell unspoken, he calmly entered home." He's now with his grandmother, uncle and all those gone on before. None of us who have never lost a child know what it's like; however, we can only imagine. But, as your friend, I know you are hurting.

Please know that I am always here for you, and that I will always love you. May God's grace and mercy sustain you, Denise, Chris and Kevin's children throughout life. Take it one day at a time.

Thoughts and prayers are sent your way from the entire Collins family.

To the Mitchell Family,
I'm sorry and saddened by your loss. Kevin was a classmate of mine in the class of 1989. Thinking back on those times, all I can do is smile and laugh because that's what Kev's essence was. He always kept jokes or funny comments coming out of his mouth, but that was him! He'll be missed by many, but by keeping his high spirits and bubbling personality in our thoughts, he'll continue to be in our hearts.
Take care, my prayers go out to you.

I hadn't seen Kevin since graduating in 1988, but he is a person who is always in the forefront of my thoughts when I think back on high school. His smile could light up a room. Thank God we have all the good memories of him to help us through this tough time. Thank God that Kevin was love wrapped up in this big body that swallowed us up when he’d give you a hug.
In this time I can feel his large but gentle arms around me saying “I love you bridge”

I don’t even know where to begin. I heard about Kevin’s passing last week and I am still awe struck. I have known Kevin since middle school and he was always so big and strong. To think of him not being here anymore truly has left me dumfounded. I have so many fond memories of Kevin. To say I am sorry for his families’ loss and send my condolences just doesn’t seem like enough but I guess it’s all that I can do. Our loss is Heavens gain.
To Kevin’s mom, wife, brother and children, I send my deepest sympathy. I will keep all of you in my prayers.

I never had the pleasure of knowing Kevin as an adult, but I knew him as an adolescent when I was assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 2 in Harrisburg. During the time he was a member of the Troop, Kevin, Chris and Rodney were the heart and soul of the group, and some of my most vivid memories of that time involve Kevin's enthusiasm, spirit and good heart (well, and occasional adolescent antics!). He was a joy to be around. My thoughts are with all of you.

To the Mitchell Family,
It saddened my heart tremendously to learn of the passing of Kevin. He was a great person! His life was on one that we all should emulate. Kevin made it fun to be in school. As high school classmates, he was FOREVER making someone laugh. He was a tremendous athlete and a man with much integrity. He will be truly missed by the entire class of 1989. We were so proud of him and his accomplishments. It was fun bragging about my classmate to football fans around the world. While looking at our yearbook I couldn't help but notice how many pictures of Kevin there were. And rightfully so, he was in everything and everyone's business. God knew Heaven needed some laughs during these difficult times that we live in, so he sent for his funniest angel, Kevin. Please take comfort in knowing that many people held him in high regards. He will truly be missed!
The class of '89 will always remember to let Kevin's cougar pride shine!! Rest in peace my brother, rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy to the family of a great man in Kevin that I knew very well during out times back in high school. Though, I have only seen him once since we have parted ways since our school days, he was still the really cool, silly & with all his many blessings, was still the down to earth Kevin that I loved from back in the day. My prayers go out to the family & all that loved & cared for Kevin. You made us very proud of all that you accomplished & their has been many times that I have bragged about how someone that I actually knew handled his business & made our city proud. You were a great man & will truly be missed. Your passing is still something that I am struggling to understand, but I know that you are now in a place that if we all attempt to lead the life that you did that we will all see you again & once again pick up from where we left off in rooting for our big man on campus. You will truly be missed !!

Hey Kev,
I just wanted to say what a pleasure it has been to know you for these last 36yrs. You were an outstanding person, a good friend, a good husband, a fantastic father, and a super cousin! I can't put in words how much I am missing you already, I struggle to maintain composure every moment of the day. They say a mans worth is not in his riches but more so in the fulfillment he left in the lives of others. You Kevin were very fulfilling. I will miss that great sense of humor you had, the wit, your charm, and killer smile. I will miss that laugh of yours and the laughter we shared, and all those nights we spent blasting jokes on each other and our other cousins. When you and I were together,,, no one was safe! And it was all in good fun. Kev, thank you for being you! You were a leader day in and day out, a fantastic quality to have. Something maybe only a few knew, but whenever we talked on the phone, we'd end it with " I love you and peace out! You see , you and I are real men and have been close our entire lives, we always told each other how we felt and weren't ashamed or embarrassed to express ourselves that way. I am going to hold my memories of you with me everyday. The days growing up, spending the summer at your house, and you spending the next at mine. The childhood memories will help "keep me". The teenage memories to help "show me". The adult memories ,,to "hold me". Our last days,,, to "guide me".
I've learned alot from you and will remember more of your teachings as time passes by. You see, we are all here for only a moment, a brief second in time. In that moment we can accomplish a lot, and that my brotha' - you had done! Thanks for the many nicknames you gave me - lol. And the ones you gave others, whoa! cause I wasn't the only one, those of you know who you are : ) Kevin, say hi to GramMa' for me, I know she was in the light with her hand held outwards to you as your guide. We all knew you were her favorite - hahaha lol. Cause everyone knew she "loved dem' boys..." are we were all her boys!
So tell Ruthie I said - "Hey , what's good girl". Kev, I will maintain and be as best a support for Chris and your MOM as possible. I promise not to lose sight of your boy - Jonathan. I will tell him how much of an impact you left on the lives you touched, and what a great man you were. He will know all there is to know of his Dad. We all will keep with Denise and the kids, for they are forever FAMILY, Nothing there will change. You my brotha' were a soldier, you executed a fine plan and fulfilled your mission, and now your job is Done.
Kev, " I love you, Peace out!
-aka : Sanchez, Edwardo & Rico' -thanks

Chris,

It is strange how things happen in life. I had just seen you last week and asked if you remembered me (Samoya's Aunt) and you said "of course I remember you". I asked how Kevin was and asked you to tell him that I said "hi". I still remember when Kevin went to the prom and he and my neice stopped by my house to show me how they looked. Boy, did they look nice! I was shocked when I learned of Kevin's death and I am deeply saddened. I will miss your brother and his smile. Please know that you have my deepest sympathy for your loss of your brother, whom you favored to the tee!. May God wrap his loving arms around you, your mom, Kevin's wife and children through your times of sorrow. God bless you and your family.
Love,

To the family of Kevin Mitchell,
I have known Kevin since 6th grade, he was always smiling and telling jokes. Once we went to high school I remember getting into heated debates re: Steel-High/Hbg High rival. I had family on Steel-High, but Hbg High was my school. Class of "89" was blessed to have someone so talented. May God bless all of you and know Kevin's work is not done-God needs him to be one of his angels. Miss you K-Mitch.

My heart goes out to the family of Kevin during this sad time. I am in shock and speechless with this huge loss of our generation. We are not promised tomorrow! He was a wonderful and kind person and will truly be missed. I owed him big (school days) and never got a chance to repay, so I will always have a place in my heart for this friend.

Dear Denise:

I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear about Kevin. Although I only met him once, I understood immediately why you were so crazy about him. Just know each time you look into your childrens' eyes you're looking into Kevin's soul. And I truly hope in time that will bring you much comfort and less and less sorrow. May your heart heal and let you find peace again.

Miss you, girlfriend.
Love,
Donna

Denise and Children, Ms Mitchell, Chris; When I heard that Kevin had passed immediately I thought that we had lost a wonderful man. Gracious, loving, respectful, outgoing are some of the words I think of reflecting on him as high school athlete, professional player and father. I will never forget his beautiful smile. May you find comfort in your memories and receive strength from our Creator to carry you through these hard times.

Kevin was a great classmate and friend. He always knew how to make you smile and laugh whenever you were in your saddest moment. Kevin had a special place in all of our hearts and he will be forever missed. As our graduating class motto states... Kevin YOU did Rise and Shine for the class of 89'. To Gloria and Chris you were truly blessed with a wonderful man! And May God continue to bless your wonderful family!
