Clete Boyer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 5, 2007.
NEW YORK (AP) – Clete Boyer, the third baseman for the champion New York Yankees teams of the 1960s who made an art form of diving stops and throws from his knees, died Monday. He was 70. Boyer died in an Atlanta hospital from complications of a brain hemorrhage, son-in-law Todd Gladden said.

"He wanted to be cremated and he wanted his ashes to go in a Yankee urn," Gladden said.

Boyer played from 1955-71 with the Yankees, Kansas City Athletics and Atlanta. He helped the Yankees reach the World Series in five straight years from 1960-64, when they won two titles.

Boyer's death came on the 50th anniversary of the day he joined the Yankees, completing a dozen-player trade between New York and the A's.

"He was a great Yankee and a tough guy. He never talked too much but he was extremely hardworking. A wonderful third baseman, and had fire in his belly," Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said through a spokesman.

In 1964, Boyer and his brother, Ken, became the first brothers to homer in the same World Series game. They did it in Game 7, and nodded to each other as they rounded the bases.

The St. Louis Cardinals won the Series and Ken was the NL MVP that season. An All-Star third baseman, he died in 1982 at age 51.

Another brother, Cloyd, pitched in the majors from 1949-55. There were 14 children in the Boyer family.

Cletis Leroy Boyer was a career .242 hitter with 162 home runs and 654 RBIs. Decent stats, but it was fielding that became his signature.

Boyer added an air of flamboyance to a Yankees team that otherwise played with a conservative precision.

"In all my years of playing with him, he only made one bad throw to me," former Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson said by telephone from his home in South Carolina.

"When I made the double play, I could just about close my eyes, put my glove up and the ball would be there," he said. "I would consider him one of the best players defensively. And when we got in the World Series and the lights came up, he made those great, great plays."

Boyer's lone Gold Glove came in 1969 in Atlanta; he might've earned more had it not been for the peerless Brooks Robinson.

"He was in the Brooksie era. He didn't get as much attention as Brooksie," said Yankees manager Joe Torre, a former Boyer teammate with the Braves.

"Plus, he was a little goofy," he said. "Certainly, it helps you play the game."

After finishing with Atlanta, Boyer played in Japan. He later coached under Billy Martin with Oakland and the Yankees.

Boyer was part of an exceptional Yankees infield in the 1960s that included Richardson, shortstop Tony Kubek and first basemen Moose Skowron.

Richardson said he was with Boyer last month in New York for a reunion of the 1961 Yankees infield. "We had three or four, we looked forward to them," Richardson said.

The Yankees beat Cincinnati in the 1961 World Series. Boyer's best Series performance came in 1962, when he hit .318 with a home run and four RBIs in the seven-game victory over San Francisco.

"I got a lot of rings by him playing third base," said Skowron, who works in community relations for the Chicago White Sox.

"When we played Cincinnati, he made those great plays. He threw a couple balls to me, he was on his knees. He was a hell of a glove man."

Boyer made his major league debut at 18 with Kansas City. With Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford and Roger Maris, the Yankees started out every season in the early 1960s as the team to beat.

"He always said, 'I wish you could have played on the team that we had in the '60s. We'd have won 150 games,'" Yankees pitching coach Ron Guidry said.

"You'd talk to Moose and he would always tell you how good a third baseman he was," he said. "You talked to Whitey Ford and he'd tell you, 'I didn't have to worry about ground balls. I could pitch inside, throw breaking balls. If they hit it down the third-base line, he was going to catch it.'"

Richardson praised Boyer's other attributes.

"I would give him a lot of credit for being a good No. 8 hitter. It wasn't easy in those days, with the pitcher hitting being you," Richardson said. "He was a team player and a great teacher.

"He was a hard liver, I don't think that's any secret," he said. "He lived life to the fullest."

My childhood hero. Who did not want to be like Clete Boyer? Every line drive snagged at third base made me think I would be like him someday. A young man´s dream. Thank you, Mr. Boyer, for all the great memories. Rest in peace.

As a young boy growing up in Texas, loved watching CB play third base. A childhood hero, ( and not a Yankee lover) he transcended team loyalties because he was a class act and great third baseman. God bless you Clete even if it´s Yankee heaven!

My wife and I met Clete at Cooperstown signing autographs and he had lunch with us the next day and he even took off his World Series ring and let my wife and I look at it. It was such a thrill to meet the former Yankee and make such a wonderful memory. He insisted on paying for the meal.

A very big part of my childhood growing up in The Bronx in the 1960s. You were part of an elite group of heros which no longer exist in a childs mind.
Hope you are at peace. You left us too soon.

As far as fielding, he was every bit as good as Brooks Robinson. Too bad both were in the same league. Only one gold glove to go around.

"We all used to make believe we were Clete Boyer, when we played third base when we were kids in the 60's. In New York, that was the only elite glove at third base in the majors for us. He was graceful, a real artist with a glove and a throwing arm as deadly as a blow dart. You gave us identity and fun that we had during the time we grew up. Thank you Cletis, for all YOU did for us in New York. You were and will always be a GREAT Yankee to all of us who saw you and were thrilled by your play. Thank You and Rest In Peace. - Richard R."

During my high school years I remember the great Yankee teams and Clete was such an important member. I especially recall his tremendous defensive plays in the World Series. That team was one of the greatest, most potent of all times - great memories for all.

Had I known that this site was available, I would have posted something sooner.
I live in Shell Knob, Missouri, 15 miles from Cassville, where records indicate that he was born. I grew up in Wichita, Kansas and would get my parents to take me to old Municipal Stadium in Kansas City to watch the Yankees play. The first major league game I saw was a double-header between the Yankees and A's July 15, 1962. '62 was Clete's best year at the plate but I always was fond of his fielding. In that game, he dove headlong to his right, gloved a hot smash, got up and threw the runner out. He always played even with the bag and dared the batter to hit it past him.
Unfortunately, he was in the same league at the same time Brooks Robinson was in Baltimore and Brooks always got the gold gloves. I was sad he got traded to Atlanta but he finally got his gold glove!

My name is Kevin([email protected]) I grew up in the Bronx and Clete Boyer was my childhood idle. My biggest regret is never meeting him while he was in Columbus, Ohio where I presently live. The day the Yankees traded him I was devastated to the point that I became a Mets fan. I would love to be able to make contact with any family he may have.

He will forever be remembered as a friendly down to earth celebrity that came to our high school. It was in 1967 and he was a guest speaker at Northside High in Warner Robins, Georgia.
He was proud to have come from such a large family and he was proud of the other atheletes in his family. He talked about setting goals and achieving them.
Later that day he was at the newest steak house in town the Western Sizzling Steakhouse to greet the diners for the evening. My family went to dinner there that night. We were some of the last customers of the evening. After we had placed our orders he came and asked to sit with us. He befriened me and asked if I would be interested in coming to Atlanta to be interviewed by his wife as help for her during the summer while he was on the road. We arranged an appointment and my parents took me to Atlanta for an interview. His wife took me to the school with her to pick up the children. I spent an afternoon in their home. It was a great memory. Ultimatately things did not work out but I was honored to have met him and his family.
The night at the restaraunt he gave me an autographed ball. I have always treasured it as I treasured meeting this great man that seemed so real and down to earth.
To the family and friends you lost a wonderful part of your life when you lost Clete Boyer. I am sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I didn't know Clete that well, Clete was at a concert to hear his favorite Country and Western singer Hank Thompson in San Jose California. I gave him some of my copyright Redneck Tee's and to give Billy Martin some as well. I took Clete home that night he was living at the Hyatt Hotel in Oakland California When I dropped him off he ask me if I had any kids I said yes I have a boy and a girl, so he ask me how many kids could I bring to the following Oakland A's game on Sunday I said 10 kids he said I will have 10 tickets waiting for you at the box office. Yes I had 10 kids including my son Michael. Then the last time I heard of Clete Boyer he was transferred to the New York Yankee's. Clete was my first experience to know a professional baseball player, when I was a kid in Abney West Virginia doing the summer I would play baseball and really loved it. Boy if it wasn't for Hank Thompson being in town that night I wouldn't have met Clete, I am sure if clete was living he could tell you many stories like the one I am telling. May you rest in peace

But he didn't have to be a star he will still be my grandfather. I hope that he will be rememberd forever. But I thank him for every thing. Baseball runs in my blood! Go Yankees!!!!

I now have a room full of pictures of him from the 1960's. My mom tells me stories of when he played and new Micky Mantel. I still have a picture of him at bat when he won the world series in 1961. He will be remembered forever.

Clete was my boyhood hero and as a lefty tried to be a right hand fielder like him. To this day i consider him the greatest fielding 3b in major league his and andtory and if not for Death Valley would have hit a ton more hr,s, as he did in Atlanta. i was very sad to hear of his passing

Marji Wright

January 3, 2010

My husband was quite disappointed to discover that Clete had died, and had never read about it. We have just finished writing his memoirs, and I would like to include the mention of Clete:

(around 1954, as he recalls)

"The Kansas/Nebraska League was already well known in major league circles and was considered a higher level of talent than most of their AAA farm clubs. It didn't take much then to persuade them to send their "bonus babies" to the Kansas/Nebraska League to prepare for the majors. Norton, (Kansas) and other teams in the league, began getting future Major Leaguers to play for them. One of my favorites was shortsop Clete Boyer who had an illustrious career with the Yankees. Clete was only 17 years old when he came to Norton as a bonus baby. Two of his brothers were already playing in the Majors.

I would ask Dad (Omar Wright) to drop me off early at all home games because they would let me and any other kids that were there play catch with players during warm-ups. I always got Clete. They would also let us stand or sit right behind their bench where we could hear the players talking to each other. I was in Heaven."

What a great memory for a kid whose family homesteaded on the Kansas prairie near Norton, starting in 1886. Instead of playing baseball, my husband(Norman) went on to a career, starting on the ground floor, of a new industry called data processing. He retired as the head of one of the largest computer services companies in America. He's my own Horatio Alger. Norm acknowledges how much he owes to the people who influenced his life, and had been hoping to look Clete up on our next cross country trip.

Thanks for the memories.

Hello to the Boyer family,
For some time now I have wanted to contact you to express my condolences regarding Mr. Boyer. I met him, along with Moose Skowren, and Tom Tresh, at a baseball card show in Tulsa, Ok. back in 1999.
I remember walking into the building where the show was to be and seeing I was the only one there except for the people putting up the tables and three guys sitting at the opposite end of the building drinking coffee. Then one of them stood up and said,"Hey, yankee fan! Don't sit there by yourself...come and join us!" Well, as I approached I could see it was three of my boyhood heroes. The guy who yelled for me to come over was Mr. Boyer. Now I don't drink coffee but I figured this would be a good time to try the stuff and went over a got a cup and sat down. Mr. Boyer was asking Moose if he had talked to Yogi lately, with Moose saying he had played some golf with him down in Florida. How's Whitey doing? Ok!
I thought I was ten years old again and in the yankee locker room! He asked me about my favorite yankee team and I said...Yogi catching, Whitey pitching, Moose at first, Bobby at second, Tony at short, Mr. Boyer at third, Elston Howard in left, Mickey in center, and Roger in right. Mr. Boyer turned to Tom Tresh and said, "See Tommie, I told you you wouldn't make the cut!" The table erupted in laughter! He asked me to tell them about my favorite yankee memory and I told them how I was living on an Army base in the middle of the Sierra Nevada Desert when I was in the sixth grade and it was the forth of July. The Yankees were playing the White Sox and had just built this new scoreboard that shot off fireworks when the Sox hit a homer. I explained that it was almost impossible to pick up a game out in the desert in California; but once in awhile you could pick up WLS-Chicago. Well I had my little transistor radio with the antenna poking out the window and listening to the game. My Dad came into my room and blared,"Get that radio off and go to sleep!" Well, I wasn't going to miss my Yankees, even if I had to take a beating with a belt. And yes, they did that in those days. So, I waited about 2 minutes and went right back to the game, with the antenna stuck out the window, and me under the covers imagining the scene at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Well there was a guy on first and second in the top of the ninth with the Yankees trailing 3-1. The white Sox had shot off the scoreboard fireworks once during the game. Mickey comes up to bat and hits one over the fence and as he is rounding third base the announcer says, "The Yankees, not to be outdone are all sitting in the dugout with spaklers in their hands, as Mantle hits the go ahead homerun!" The Yankees held in the bottom of the ninth and won! I laid awake all night thinking about it!
Then I asked Mr.Boyer about his favorite Yankee moment and he shared the time He and his brother Ken were playing in the World series and a reporter asked his Mom who she was rooting for and his Mother said, "That Boyer kid!"
He later took me out, before the crowd got there, and asked me what I was looking for today at the card show. I said, besides meeting you guys, I wanted to look for some baseball cards I used to have. He said, "What happened to them?" I said, "I had every Mickey Mantle card they ever made and probably five of each player. They never made it from my house in Illinois to California on that Mayflower moving van. I said I really want to find the one card of Mickey hitting it out of Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. against the old Senators. He said How much can you spend? I said I've got $100.00. He said come with me. Now I don't know how I did it but I ended up with that card, another Mickey Mantle card, a Moose Skowren card, a Bobby Richardson card, two Whitey Ford cards, a MR. Boyer card, and a felt pennant with the 1961 yankees in a black and white picture stapled in the corner that were given out at Yankee stadium during the 1961 World Series! I have a sneeky suspicion Mr. Boyer picked up part of the tab that day.
I just wanted you to know how Mr. Boyer, (he tried to get me to call him Clete all morning), brightened my day that day and how I will never forget his kindness and generosity.
So you see, for me he'll always be Mr. Boyer!
Sincerely,
Dr. Barry Roberts

I just found this doing a Clete Boyer memorabilia search... I met Clete in 1969 when i was 8 years old in a small grocery store south of Atlanta. He was there signing autographs with another Brave (pitcher) Milt Pappas. Clete was my idol growing up (along with Hank Aaron and Sonny Jackson). I dragged my mom down to this store just so i can see him up close. He was so laid back, he made me feel so special. Clete showed me how he wore his glove (that's right, Clete wore my glove for about a minute). He had such an impact on my baseball career as a little leaguer. I would try to squat real low when i played 3rd base as a kid and could never figure out how Clete could pop up out of that stance to field grounders. It's amazing what 5 minutes at a small country store in Georgia can do for someone. As i got older i never forgot the attention he gave me. I knew he was a Yankee great, but he will always be an Atlanta Brave to me. I didn't realize until he died that he picked Atlanta to spend his retirement years. Reading the other stories in this guestbook confirmed what a great person he was to his fans. I'd always hoped to see him again to tell him about the impact he had on me. I miss you Clete Boyer.

The experience of loosing a loved one comes across shocking and may cause disbelief. The pain is hard to deal with alone. You are not alone. The Almighty can help you cope with such feelings. "God comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those in any sort of tribulation through the comfort with which we ourselves are being comforted by God." 2 Corinthians 1:4

May the Almighty God prove to be a source of hope to the family and friends.

I don't recall anyone--anyone who could play third base like my old roomie--Clete.
Plus when Clete and I were teammates at Richmond he was a tremendous SS.
I roomed with Clete when he came back to the Yankees in 1959.
Many people didn't know what a great teacher Clete was.
I will miss his wit and friendliness.

Hope I meet you again someday.

I grew up as a Braves fan and was living in Jacksonville Fla when the Braves moved to Atl. Being in north Fla there were good AM radio broadcast of the Braves games and I came quite familiar with the Braves infield of Cepeda, Millian, Jackson and Boyer. Clete became my favorite 3rd baseman as a Brave not as a Yankee but I do appreciate his career as a Yankee and a Brave. A great loss to the Boyer family and major league baseball. Bill Clements

December 28, 2007

I met Clete outside the Royal Package store in Lilburn Georgia in 2006. I knew who he was from the owner and being named after Mickey Mantle I said hello to him and told him even though I was "young" (40) years old and never saw him play I knew who he was....a great 3rd baseman.
When I told him my name and how my father named me after Mickey Mantle he told me how his son was Mickey and how he too named him after Mantle.
Here is where it gets great...as I walked out of the store he was looking through his brown? custom van for something and he told me "wait a minute". He signed me a ball with his normal WS inscription on it.
Seeing how great a guy he was I called my dad in Wilkes Barre PA (thank God for cell phones) and he and Clete talked for almost 10 minutes about kids and baseball and Mantle. They were to meet one day in New York where he spent his summers. Sadly they never got to meet.
I can't tell you how nice a man he was to meet. I was a stranger and he was so kind.
I hope someone will read this and tell his family.

Clete Boyer was one of the best infielders to ever play the game. He was a true ambassador of Major League Baseball...I was grateful to have met him several times. Clete had a kind, quiet way about him and the twinkle in his eye was always there on gameday. God bless you Clete

Like many of my age group, I was always a Yankee fan since I was a kid. More importantly, I was a Clete Boyer fan from whenever I first joined Little League baseball. In every game I played, I was Clete Boyer. I always had the number "6" on the back of my jersey. To this day, my favorite number is 6. The grace and agility that Mr. Boyer had as a player left an indelible mark on me as a fan and as a player. When I heard of his passing, I was surely affected, as I had always hoped to have met him in person (which I never did). In any case, there are plenty out there like me who, as a child, found a hero and
Clete Boyer was mine. Everytime I dove at a line drive or made a great backhanded catch of a hot ground ball, Clete was with me. My condolences.

My sympathies to the Boyer family and close friends. I was a little girl in the sixties who wanted in the worst way to play little league baseball. It was not to be. I was ahead of my time, I guess. All those memories came flooding back several years ago, when I was at the Albany Colonie (NY) Heritage Park baseball field. I got up the courage to approach Clete Boyer, a special guest at the park that night, and one of my childhood heros. Boy am I glad I did. We chatted quite awhile about his time with the Yankees and Bobby Richardson. I smile even now, as I think back of that special evening at the ballpark. Thanks for the memory, Clete. RIP

I was a 3rd baseman because of Clete, you were every bit as good as Brooks Robinson. You will be missed by all of us that enjoyed baseball. Had a great poster of Clete in a Atlanta Braves uniform playing 3rd, but
Clete was a Yankee through and through.

Collette, I was watching the Old Timers
Day Program today and looking for your Dad. I was sad to hear that he passed.
If you remember, you gave me a signed
picture of him when you found out that I was a Yankee fan from New Jersey. So sorry to hear of your loss. I hope you are ok.

Mickey and Collette, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. He was such a great man. I'm sure he's in heaven visiting with all the greats. Your Dad never forgot a face. We saw him in NY at the Hall of fame and he remembered me and my crush on Mickey, way back when we met at the Oakland Coliseum years ago. My prayers go out to you Mickey, your daughter and Collete . Hugs from California.

Clete's memorial service was such a loving tribute. His baseball triumphs and great family-sharing films/photos. Clete's early ATL Braves days~~good times.
Hugs to Valerie & the family for a reminiscent compilation of home & friends & baseball. Touching eulogies told of a life fully lived...with great heart for his family & friends. Bless you all.

My condolences to the Boyer family. I got to know Clete fairly well when I lived and worked in Cooperstown. I am a lifelong Tiger fan, a fact Clete was well aware of. A few summers ago, when the Tigers nearly broke the record for most losses, Clete would be sitting on that bench in front of my apartment every morning with that Yankee hat and towel he always had. "How'd the Tigers do last night?" I'd hear and then he'd give me a little grin.
When I opened my store in Vermont he came up and signed autographs to help with my opening.
Again, my sympathies to the Boyer family. Thanks for the memories Clete

Clete was such a nice man. My husband and I met him last year at his yard sale. We even helped him get rid of his favorite chair at that yard sale. His daughter was glad to get rid of it. LOL. We sat for a long time talking baseball. My daddy had just passed away and we were talking about the St. Louis Cardinals and Yankees and the Braves. Clete’s two brothers had played on the Cardinals and that’s where my daddy had played. Daddy was a few years older than Clete and more the age of his brothers. He took the time to pose and have a picture taken with us. He even invited us to stay and eat lunch with him. I sure will miss him. He was such a great guy. My sympathies go out to the family.

What a great 3rd baseman Clete was. My husband and I went to most all the home games when he played for the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta and I can truly say he was probably my most favorite player ever.... I was so saddened to hear of his death and his family is truly in my thoughts and prayers.

Unfortunately I was never able to meet up with Clete. My parents took me by his house one day to introduce me to him, but he had gone to Cooperstown for the HOF induction. I regret that I was never able to sit down and talk baseball with him after my parents met him. Clete considered himself a Yankee, though I will view him as a Brave still. Prayers go out to the family.

I had the pleasure of meeting Clete
Boyer, once at a card show on Long Island and another time in Cooperstown. He was very gracious and took the time to talk with me about baseball.I mentioned to him as a kid I remembered watching the great plays he made against the Reds in the 1961 World Series. At Cooperstown we met again at a signing where I purchased a photo of the 1963 Yankee infield which he signed. He invited me to his restaurant not far from the signing and we continued our con versation about his playing days with the Yankees.Clete excused himself telling me he would be right back, when he returned he handed me the glove that he used when he played for the Yankees. He let me try it on and hold it for a few minutes.I can't express the thrill he gave to me with his act of kindness. So at this time I will remember Clete for his kindness and all the great moments he gave us as one of the great Yankees.Rest in peace Clete in Yankee heaven.
