Charles Lindberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 25, 2007.
RICHFIELD, Minnesota (AP) - Charles W. Lindberg, one of the U.S. Marines who raised the first American flag over Iwo Jima during World War II, has died. He was 86.

Lindberg spent decades explaining that it was his patrol, not the one captured in the famous Associated Press photograph by Joe Rosenthal, that raised the first flag as U.S. forces fought to take the Japanese island.

Lindberg - no relation to Charles Lindbergh the aviator - died Sunday, said John Pose, director of the Morris Nilsen Funeral Home.

In the late morning of Feb. 23, 1945, Lindberg joined five other Marines fighting their way to the top of Mount Suribachi.

"Two of our men found this big, long pipe there," he said in an interview with The Associated Press in 2003. "We tied the flag to it, took it to the highest spot we could find and we raised it.

"Down below, the troops started to cheer, the ship's whistles went off, it was just something that you would never forget," he said. "It didn't last too long, because the enemy started coming out of the caves."

The moment was captured by Sgt. Lou Lowery, a photographer from the Marine Corps' Leatherneck magazine. It was the first time a foreign flag flew on Japanese soil, according to the book "Flags of Our Fathers," by James Bradley with Ron Powers.

By Lindberg's account, his commander ordered the first flag replaced and safeguarded because he worried someone would take it as a souvenir. Lindberg was back in combat when six men raised the second, larger flag about four hours later.

Rosenthal's photo of the second flag-raising became one of the most enduring images of the war and the model for the U.S. Marine Corps memorial in Washington.

No one, Lindberg said, believed him when he said he raised the first flag at Iwo Jima. "I was called a liar," he said.

In 1954, Lindberg was invited to Washington for the dedication of the Marine memorial. It carried the names of the second group of flag-raisers, but not the first.

To Vi and Family,

I just stumbled across Chuck's obituary notice while googling his name to share some information about him with a friend. I'm so very sorry to learn of your loss. Having grown up next door to your family, I fondly remember Chuck's warm, larger-than-life character. I've always appreciated his Iwo Jima story, and always look for him to be interviewed whenever there is a documentary on the battle and flag raising. It is very satisfying to know that he led a very long and fulfilling life - and all those wonderful grandchildren! I'm sure you will all miss him very much. Take care of yourselves.

Best regards,
Linda

To Vi and the Lindberg kids, it was an honor to have known Chuck. I appreciate everything he did for me during the Toys for Tots campaign in MN along with the rest of the Marine Corps Organizations. It was also a great honor to have you at the 2006 Marine Corps Recruiting Ball along with the Chairman of the JCS, General Pace.

Vi, if you ever need anything, please contact us and we will make it happen.

Dear Vi - I'm sure you won't recall our meeting in Washington, DC last Veterans Day. I was the star-struck history-lover from Baltimore who was watching your husband and the other veterans who had congregated at the WWII Memorial. They were telling their stories and I was standing in awe at a distance. You were so kind to visit with me and tell me your stories. You introduced me to this special man and you gave me one of his cards (and I treasure it). I will always count that as one of the most special days of my life. My sincerest sympathy in your loss. May your life continue to be full in new and wonder-filled ways.

Sincerely,

My uncle said a few years ago he would like to get in touch with him but had no idea how to. I said I could find him on the internet and I did.

I have a paperback book called "Battle Cry". This I bought in November, of last year. It's signed by Charles W. Lindberg. It's no less a treasure to me now, than it was when I bought it. I have read much about him and will now re-read it. He's more than an icon. Bless you all and the memory of Charles W. Lindberg, and all veterans everywhere, who made great sacrifices and did wonderous deeds.

I have a small "memorial" in my home dedicated to Robert Dalton (USMC) and all others who served in WWII. The book is there.

Semper_Fi _ Chuck
My deepest sympothy to the Lindberg Family. I only got to know Mr & Mrs Lindberg briefly over the phone yet was always a pleasure. I have 3 treasured items now. I have 2 flags flown on the USS Arizona on the 50th anniversary of bombing of Pearl Harbor 7 Dec 1991 which have also been signed by Mr Lindberg. Probaly the only 2 of this combonation in the world. For fathers day 2007 my son gave me a small vase with Iwo Jima Sand in it. I will continue to carry the torch telling of the First Flag Raisers. Charles isn't gone, he's just changed his duty station. As they say in the Marine Hymm "If the Army or the Navy ever look on Heaven's seens they will find the streets are guarded by the United States Marines". He's just pulling Gate Duty now with St. Peter.

My deepest sympathy to the family and my eternal respect and gratitude to Mr. Lindberg. His service during one of the most crucial moments and during one of the most crucial battles in American history will never be forgotten. The importance to being a key figure in instantly raising the morale of your comarades and crushing the spirit of your foes can not be understated. As Secretary Forrestal said, "That flag means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years." It is infintely sad for us to lose a national treasure, but Heaven surely is a better (and well guarded) place. What a pity so many of our WWII heros are leaving us. We miss you and we admire you. And we respect you for your service to our country. Your generation was the last "great" generation of soldiers and heroes, so it has been said. You have been an example to all those who currently serve in our armed forces. Your generation of soldiers are the ones to whom our young ones look for leadership and example. I know that God has been pleased with your service here on earth. May you continue to serve him in spirit as you have served him in the flesh on this earth. Our hearts go out to your family in this trying time for them, but for you, we rejoice in your reunion with the loved ones who proceeded you in death. You have a wonderful new life ahead of you.

To the Lindberg Family I extend our deepest sympathies. We are honored and proud th have our building named after Chuck. He symbolizes all we strive for in our own lives. What was risked or sacrificed many years ago we should all appreciate today. The pride and dedication that Chuck had for our country is not measureable. We at the JATC feel very honored to be the vessel to hold the spirit for all that Chuck embodies. In dedicating the building in Chuck's name we are all dedicating ourselves to have that same kind of conviction and pride in all we do in our daily lives. I was introduced to Chuck & his wife Vi, in Mandan ND, oh!! 15-17 ?? years ago. GREAT PEOPLE!!! I would stop and visit them when I would get to the cities. They were always happy to see me and they would always open up their home and their hearts to me. I was a young man interested in WW2 military history. I can't tell you how many photos the Lindbergs gave me and how very special it was when they gave me a vile of sand from Iwo Jima. I had gotten other photos and a fabulous art print from them over the years. I have & will continue to proudly display these photos at gun shows telling America the rest of the story. I am sorry that I will have to miss the service Friday. I picked the wrong week for knee surgery. Actually, If we trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding, He will direct our paths. When I first meet the Lindbergs I was still a sinner, but I have since been saved by His [Gods] Grace. My path will not lead me to Minneapolis this weekend, but I am so thankful for the friendship that was formed so many years ago. My heart, my thoughts & my prayers are with you Vi and family. May God grant you His Grace and His Peace in Jesus Name.

I had the honor and the privilege to meet Mr. Lindberg back in 2003. I had just left active duty (USMC '98-'03) and I was attending a Marine Corps Birthday get-together at the Holiday Inn South in Rochester MN where Chuck was the guest of honor. Everyone watched and listened intently as Chuck shared his memories from his experiences on Iwo Jima while showing us a slide show of pictures he had. He told us stories with such vivid detail it was as if he had just come home from that war. Chuck is an inspiration to all Marines and is indeed an American Hero. It is with great respect and honor that I will remember him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.

Who put aside their fears

We thank Chuck and the many men
