John Ferguson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 16, 2007.
TORONTO (AP) - Former NHL player and general manager John Ferguson Sr. has died after a long fight with prostate cancer. He was 68.

Ferguson died Saturday. He was one of the toughest players to lace up skates in the NHL and remained a big part of the sport as a general manager, coach and scout at the highest level.

Ferguson, the father of current Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Ferguson Jr., played eight NHL seasons from 1963-71, all with the Montreal Canadiens, and was a Stanley Cup champion five times.

Ferguson was found to have prostate cancer in September 2005 and thought he had beaten the disease, but it came back.

Ferguson was general manager and coach of the New York Rangers for two tumultuous years until 1978 and general manager of the Winnipeg Jets, both in the WHA and NHL, from 1979-88, briefly serving as coach. He was the manager of Windsor Raceway between hockey jobs before becoming director of player personnel for the Ottawa Senators from 1992-95. He was a senior scout for the San Jose Sharks from 1995 until his death.

Growing up so close, made him seem like family.
Living so far, made him seem like an hero,
A hero that i had alway wished to be like,
Knowing him, made me feel like a star,
When inside we all knew, he was the star,
He was more then a courageous hockey player,
He wasnt only a hero on the ice,
He was my hero in the real world,
He was an amazing man to know,
He always did the right things,
He was brave, loving, caring, funny, pollite, intelligant, respectful, honest, and most of all a fighter,
He fought in a game,
He fought for his life,
He fought for the right things,
He lived a memorable life, one you could only be proud of.
I am so dearly sorry for your lost, you have my deepest sympathy.
Fergie will always remembered.

I just found out about John's passing and am sad. As I was growing up, he and the Habs were my heroes. Later, I had the opportunity to get to know him, as a Winnipeg sportscaster. He was always gracious, respectful and kind to me, as was his daughter Chris, who worked in the Jets office. My condolences to Chris and the rest of the Ferguson family.

I was one of the fortunate to watch the other John Ferguson -- the box lacrosse player and coach. His talent with a lacrosse stick in his hand was matched by other greats of his time but never surpassed. The Nanaimo Timberman were truly a team to be reckoned with when John Ferguson was on the floor. The time he spent with minor lacrosse, promoting and teaching the sport to us youngsters was something not to be forgotten. Thanks John.

I met Mr. John Ferguson in Montreal at the QE Hotel while he was attending the draft of young players several years ago. John was the General Manager then. I recall him looking at me and nodding his head in a very pleasant way. A truly remarkable person . A great hockey player and a very proud representative of his team , the Montreal Canadiens. Will always remember his part in the 1971 Stanley Cup in Chicago won after Henri Richard scored the winning goal....Mr. Ferguson was an intense player of that cup...An icon in his one way. All the best to his family and friends..

The passing of a hockey legend. John, you will always be remembered fondly here in Canada's capital. Your reputation as a tough hockey player preceeded your time here but I will always remember your humour. As we passed in the halls you always had a smile and a hello. My sympathies to the Ferguson family. John will be dearly missed.

On behalf of Cathy & Janet's (Ferguson) families in B.C., our hearts go out to Joan, Christina, Cathie, John and Joanie at this difficult time. We really appreciated John's call last December when Cathy passed away, talking about how she took him to his first lacrosse game and other happy memories from growing up in Vancouver, even though he was going through his own struggles at the time. Growing up in Montreal in the 60's & 70's meant that I was a huge Habs fan, and of course a huge fan of John Ferguson. He was always generous to the fans with his time, signing autographs, posing for photos, etc. Wishing Joan, Joanne and the rest of the family heartfelt thoughts in this very dfficult time.

When I was 7 years old playing hockey in Ponsard Park house leagues, John Ferguson was always my hockey hero. Even though they stuck me on the Bruins that first year and I was a goalie I insisted on wearing #22. They tried to force #1 or #30 on me but I cried until they finally gave in. I wore #22 throughout my playing days right up to juvenile and into recreational leagues. I often met resistance from coaches along the way but I always persisted. 'Fergie' was my first hockey hero and remains one of my all-time favourite Habs.

It was with great sadness I learned of John Ferguson's passing. My heartfelt sympathies go to his family and I trust his spirit and legacy will live with you and comfort you forever. He was a childhood hero of mine growing up in Windsor and Dearborn. I've become more proud of him this week as I learned about his life outside of hockey and his charitable activities. I am deeply saddened on the news of John's passing.I first met John being paired with him at the St.Charles Pro -Am Golf Tournament. Two weeks later , he offered half of a horse he had bought at the yearling sale. (of course we named it Dancingonthegreen(and Chris trained it).
I never met a person so kind ,and family oriented, in my life. Thanks, Fergie, for the memories from the snow golf with tennis balls at Pine Ridge,, to the day at Hollywood Park watching Skywalker run before he went on to fame.
To Joan and your children, remember John for all the happiness he brought to everyone, even for just saying hello to them.I will never forget his great spirit for life, or his hospitality .

Many memories of John Sr. We used to take the Voyageur bus to the Forum from Ottawa. We worshiped John Beliveau but without John Ferguson's combination of toughness and skill the Habs would not have dominated the 1960s. The habs tried a couple of guys before him in that role, and many teams in the following decades have tried to find a guy to duplicate what John Ferguson brought to the table but all failed.

I took my kids a few years ago to a signing at a card shop downtown Toronto to meet John Ferguson and to get him to sign a picture for my ailing mum. I recall one of the things he told me was that when he was with Ottawa he told them that had to pick an unknown Swede named Daniel Alfredsson in the first round, he was that good. Fergie sure had an eye for talent!

Condolences to former PEI Senator John Jr. and family.

Dear Joan and Family:

I was saddened to hear of Fergie's passing on Saturday. I've told many people over the years that Fergie was one of the finest persons I had ever met in all of my years in hockey and I want you to know I had the utmost respect for him. He was a dear friend and a real great guy.

July 16, 2007

When I was 18 years old living in Nanaimo (1965) I got a phone call from Fergie to come back to Montreal to play lacrosse for the team he coached. What a thrill, one night I am watching the Stanley Cup finals and then the next Saturday I am out with Fergie and the team celebrating the win. I spend the first few weeks with Fergie and Joan in Montreal. Over the summer I learned a lot about being a part of a team from Fergie, I still remember the one on ones (Fergie) the morning after a bad loss!! The summer I spend in Montreal playing for Fergie was the best summer of my life, I learned so much from a man I have always admired and respected. My condolences to the Ferguson family. I have a big autographed photo of the famous 22 in my Habs shrine and for sure it's the center piece. You are in my Hall of Fame for all the right reasons!

He was instrumental in encouraging me to run a Charity Tournament in London similar to his tournament in Windsor for Prostate Cancer Research & Equipment, the same disease he sucumbed to this past Saturday.
To Joan and his Family, God Bless you and rejoice in the celebration of the life of a wonderful man, husband and father, that will live on forever.

I want to offer my condolences to the Ferguson Family. I was introduced to hockey by my late father who died from cancer 25 years ago and his favorite player was a guy he called Fergie and he wore # 22. I watched the games and he became my favorite too so I asked for a Hab jersey with # 22 on it for Christmas. He told me I would have to be a fighter to wear it living in Leaf country but I didn't care. Fergies passing brings back fond memories of my father and the time we spent watching our beloved HABS and his favorite player. Rest In Peace
