Oliver Hill Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 5, 2007.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ Oliver W. Hill, a civil rights lawyer who was at the front of the legal effort that desegregated public schools, has died at age 100, a family friend said.

Hill died peacefully Sunday at his home during breakfast, said Joseph Morrissey, a friend of the Hill family.

In 1954, he was part of a series of lawsuits against racially segregated public schools that became the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision, which changed America's society by setting the foundation for integrated education.

In 1940, Hill won his first civil rights case in Virginia, one that required equal pay for black and white teachers. Eight years later, he was the first black elected to Richmond's City Council since Reconstruction.

A lawsuit argued by Hill in 1951 on behalf of students protesting deplorable conditions at their high school for blacks in Farmville became one of five cases decided under Brown.

Born May 1, 1907, Hill spent much of his childhood in Roanoke. While his parents worked out of town at The Homestead resort, he stayed with the Pentecost family, who taught him about pride in being black.

''Consequently, from childhood I developed personal esteem and expected white folks to treat me like they did one another in such settings,'' Hill wrote in his autobiography.

He graduated second in his class from Howard University Law School in 1933, behind his classmate and longtime friend, Thurgood Marshall.

He had recalled that when he started his law career, the court clerks in the building that housed the state Supreme Court of Appeals and law library allowed him to review legal books over weekends with the understanding that he would return them Monday mornings _ ''quite a gesture for those days,'' Hill said.

Two years ago, that same building _ now a century old and renovated _ was renamed in Hill's honor. He attended the 2005 building dedication despite ill health, saying in a statement read by his son: ''Who would have thought back in 1939, given the racial climate at the time, that 66 years later that building would be named after me.''

Though blind and confined to a wheelchair in recent years, Hill remained active in social and civil rights causes. In 1999, he received the President Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, from President Clinton.

In 2003, Hill urged a Virginia legislative committee to support a resolution expressing ''profound regret'' for what was known in the 1950s as ''Massive Resistance,'' the state-led effort to defy the Supreme Court's desegregation order. Rather than desegregate, Virginia chose to close entire public schools.

This past May, state officials unveiled images of a memorial planned on the state Capitol grounds in Richmond that features Hill and the students who staged the 1951 walkout at Farmville. The $2.6 million monument is to be unveiled next July. He also greeted Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to the state Capitol to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America.

I write both for myself and on behalf of the Frances Lewis Law Center at Washington & Lee University School of Law to offer condolences on the death of Oliver Hill. Mr. Hill was our guest several times at the Law Center.

In particular, he was a keynote speaker, along with Lewis Powell and Robert Merhige, at a symposium on the desegregation of the Richmond public schools that the Law Center held in 1992, when I had just begun teaching at W&L. I had the honor of meeting him and Mrs. Hill there and the great privilege of sharing lunch with them. He was a hero of mine for his courage, his long-term principled stance in support of integration, and his brilliance in devising and carrying through a strategy which could succeed in the face of the most ruthless and unrelenting opposition.

What a loss we have all suffered! But what an example he provides for future generations! I am personally grateful to have known him and institutionally proud that we were able to introduce him to a generation of students at W&L Law School.

To the Hill Family,
You have my deepest sympathy concerning the loss of your loved one. I want to also express my gratitude to your family for being the type of family that allowed Mr. Hill to accomplish so many great things and have a continued impact in the civil rights arena into his advanced years. I am extremely grateful for Mr. Hill's efforts, because I was able to enjoy the positive results of intergration from my first day of kindergarten to my senior year of college. I was able to go to the school of MY CHOICE and receive an excellent education.
Mr Hill, Thank You from the depths of my heart for the opportunities afforded to me through education. I will keep your spirit alive !!!!!! To the Hill family, you are all in my prayers. God Bless you all.

Oliver, Jr.
It's been over 45 years since we sat together in home room and in many of the same classes at Chandler Junior High. And I don't think I ever shared with you that one morning, approaching school, I saw your dad, in his car on Brookland Park Boulevard, with a camera, taking pictures of everyone climbing up the front steps. I stopped and greeted him, and I asked why he would want to take pictures of kids just going to school. He smiled at me (a young white boy) and said, "That you and I can both look at this scene and simply see 'just kids going to school' says a lot about where we've come from, where we are, and where we're headed". I guess I was too young then to fully comprehend the wisdom with which he spoke, but looking back over the times in which we've lived, I realize now what it meant to him, what it means to us, and what it says about our future. My condolences to you and your family at the time of your loss.

I had the honor of interning with State Senator and former Richmond Mayor, Henry Marsh, III, while attending Virginia Commonwealth University. When the VA General Assembly was not in session, I would go to the Hill, Tucker and Marsh law firm, which at that time was in Jackson Ward. I had the honor and pleasure to meet and work with Mr. Hill. In his 90's, he still came to work everyday. He took the time to sit down with me and talk about the many historical events he either witnessed or that he was a part of. 11 years later, I still tell people of my experience in meeting Mr. Hill. My sincere condolences to his family, and it's good to know that Mr. Hill is in a better place. The old law firm of Thurgood Marshall, Spottswood Robinson, and Oliver Hill are back together again.

As an African-American woman who is proud to be a citizen of the U.S. and Commmonwealth of Virginia, and in my occupation as an employee of EEOC, I truly comprehend that the greater part of my enjoyment as a free woman of color in this great nation of ours is an inheritance from Mr. Oliver Hill and other great civil rights leaders. The dignity he projected as a human being and leader made him a national treasure. I cannot help but think also that Mr. Hill's lovely wife had to have been a fabulous woman to support him in his contributions to society and I am exceedingly proud of them, their son and his wife, and their children and grands, as an African-American family. Thanks for the perfectly organized and quietly beautiful memorial service -- interspersed with moments of humor, and good sacred and secular music, that reflected the very best in African-American traditions and Virginian culture.

To The Hill Family,
Our hearts go out to you at this time and in the days ahead. We are so sorry for the loss of your Father. May it be a comfort to know that others care and also grieve, but the legacy of Mr. Hill's great life brings beautiful memories to mind which helps to ease the sorrow. We hope that you and your family will not hesitate to ask for anything that we can do for you during this difficult time. May you all find peace and joy in the celebration of his 100 years of life...well done!
Please accept our deepest sympathy.

To his credit, Oliver W. Hill Sr. never, never lost his zeal to fight the good fight, as well as to teach and inspire others to do the same.

I can--personally--attest to that ineluctable fact...based on several phone conversations I had with him.

Most definitely, he was a paragon and beacon of hope for all who aspired to uplift humanity--notably African Americans caught in the iron grip of social and racial injustice.

He was a man who knew who he was (inside and out), who was admirably comfortable in his own skin, who had an indomitable spirit of goodness and who stood firmly on the courage of his convictions.

Happily, those are priceless gifts he used in the service of mankind...until he drew his last breath.

Unlike far too many of mortals, he did not live a life of quiet desperation. And so, at twilight, owing to his yeoman work here on earth, he had more than proved himself deserving of the divine accolade "good and loyal servant."

To be sure, his saintly legacy--personal and professional--will endure. As an alumnus of Washington, DC's Dunbar High School, from Oliver graduated, I am especially proud of his legacy.

May he rest in peace and be rewarded a well-deserved, special place in the Kingdom of the Almighty for his unselfish laboring in the vineyards of the poor, oppressed and dispossessed.

I bid my friend...Oliver...a hearty and heartfelt farewell--and thank him for the invaluable nuggets of wisdom he bestowed upon--before entering the Pearly Gates.

To the Hill Family,
I offer you my sincere sympathy and prayers. I never had the opportunity to meet Attorney Oliver W. Hill, Sr. but his eyes always showed compassion. This compassion led him to fight to get us a better education in the finer schools and to be treated as equals. His reward awaits him in God's Kingdom for all of his struggles to pave the road for many of us today.
Mr. Hill.........THANK YOU.

Blessings to the family of a wonderful, blessed, giant of a man. Many of us knew him for his struggles in the legal arena helping to eradicate injutices of all kinds.

We recognize, that he did not end his battle once the schools were desegregated. Lee Davis High school was one of those schools that closed rather than admit Blacks years ago. In 1998 MR.Hill came to Lee Davis to help celebrate in the very first month long celebration of what is termed Black History month. As I set the program in place, the principal at that time was astonished that the Great Oliver Hill would take his time to come to Lee Davis High School. We were more than honored that he chose to come years later to be with us at Lee Davis. He shared in a marvelous way, as only he can tell the stories in a way that all can understand, with students, teachers, who knew very little about the civil rights struggles. Lee Davis, in Mechanicsville, was and remains a school with a predominantly Caucasian population. Oliver Hill came, with his walker, and spent time talking with anyone who wanted to have a word with him.

A real leader, a historic giant and man who knew who he was gave back to the world from whence he came. His legacy and high honors never allowed him to set himself apart from the people and the place from where he came. He knew in his heart what was and remains truly important. He lived that spirit and we honor him now.

A man of character, a man of spirit, a man any of us pttern our lives after. We can work toward attaining Olive Hill like characteristics. We can honor his legacy by doing as Mr.Hill did. Give your best to mankind in his honor.

Missing him,and loving the legacy of his life.

We are saddened to hear about the loss of Attorney Oliver Hill. Mr. Hill was a former board member of the Lake Laura Homeowners Association, Inc. In that role, he was instrumental in helping the association with the transference of property from the developer to the association management and ownership. We appreciated his legal talent and expertise, which yielded a smooth transition. We thank him for his friendship, integrity, management skills and more importantly, the contributions he made to ensure civil rights and equality for all people.

God bless this wonderful man. He set the stage for giving people equal rights. My daughter is a diastrophic dwarf, three feet tall. She is 37 and has had so many surgeries and pain. She is now teaching at Chester Middle. She IS the drama dept. She is a happy married lady today. It is people like Oliver Hill that fought for equal rights for EVERYONE, black or white or other. When you get dealt a bad hand, as we were told in 1971, that my daughter should be put into an institution because she was not viable,we learned that there are people who really care about what happens to others, no matter what. That is what Oliver, I am sure, was all about. It is a thing called unconditional love.
There are angels that look after us. Oliver just got his wing.

Our love to all, Cathy Holland

Dear Oliver,

So many years you have been there for us
You’ve even been around when times were tough.
You’re a man of distinction, A man of pride
A man who has always stood by his family’s side.
Nothing in this world could make you frown
Not even a cross burning could hold you down.
A civil rights activist you were, and one you will continue to be
Even now your spirit is all around us, and your soul has been set free.
No more worry, no more grief.
Cause you’re going to a place where God is chief.
So be at rest and be at peace our love
From now on you’ll be speaking to us from above.
Dear God, we give you our loved one this day
So take good care of him, even though we want him to stay.
We love you Oliver Hill, with all of our hearts
And we hate that now we will be apart.
We will take a moment every day just for you
And don’t for get the Coles Family loves you too.

Sincerely,

To the Hill family: A good soldier has gone home. God lent him to us to pave the way for many. He made a difference is so many lives and God will give him a crown of life. He held on to his beliefs and was not afraid to speak up for right. We need people in the world like him today. Be blessed and know that he is resting in peace. He fought a good fight and now he has gone for his reward. Be blessed and carry on in Mr Hill's name.
