Terry Ennis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 14, 2007.
EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - Terry Ennis, the second-winningest coach in state prep football history, died Wednesday. He was 63.

Ennis died of prostate cancer at a Seattle hospital.

He compiled a 287-87 record in 36 seasons with several schools, most recently Archbishop Murphy in Everett, where this year the football stadium was renamed in his honor. He led three teams to state championships: Cascade in 1991, and Archbishop Murphy in 2002 and 2003.

The only coach in Washington with more victories is Tumwater High's Sid Otton, who is in his 40th season.

Ennis' teams were known for their discipline and conditioning, as well as their use of a successful Wing-T offense, which emphasized angle blocking and simple but effective running plays.

My sincere condolences to the family of this great man. I listened to Terry speak at a clinic in Seattle in 1994. He always made himself available to other coaches. He was an open book. Our path's crossed again at the NFL Youth Summit in 2004. Terry and I hung out and talked football often during that trip. I also worked a camp in which Terry's team was a participant in the summer of 2006 at Mariner H.S. I remember being so impressed by his compassion for kids and his genuine honesty. Terry......you will be missed!

I have just recently found out about Mr. Ennis and was deeply saddened by his death. All 3 of my sons were coached by Mr. Ennis and he was the best of the best as the football coach for Cascade High. I was there when he took our Bruin's to the Kingbowl and won the state championship in 1991. You will be greatly missed, by those you coached and those who were looking forward, to being coached by you, as you did as a small boy walking home from grade school. Until we meet again, on a playing field some where in the future God's Speed

hey may not coach the team of wildcats but he does coach the team of angels

I grew up on East Casino Road and had to walk past Cascade High School (Everett,Wa) to get home from grade school every day. The field was clearly visible from the road and I could see the team practicing from the street. As a kid I was strongly influenced by this and all I could think about was sports, and the only sport I wanted to be good at was football, and the only team I wanted to play for was Cascade. That dream finally became true in 1995-96 as a freshmen;however, Coach Ennis's path and mine wouldn't cross until my sophmore season on the field. I never wanted to impress someone as bad as I wanted to impress Coach Terry Ennis my sophmore year. If he told me to jump, I asked "how high?". I thought I was doing somewhat of a good job until one day in the weight room I looked over and he was bench pressing more than me and probably more than others in the weight room. That was impressive to me as a teenaged kid and I suddenly realized that 1)I needed to work on bench if I was gonna start that season and 2)Coach Terry Ennis was a natural leader always motivating those around him even when he wasn't trying.

Coach Ennis: "Your accomplishments have been a great inspiration to me and I hope that I can be as successful in my endeavors as you were with yours. It was a time in my life I will never forget. Thanks for all the memories and pushing me to be the best, in the classroom and on the field. I'll treasure the bus rides down to Everett memorial stadium before a game and embrace the bus rides we took back home celebrating all of our victories we as team won together. And Lastly, I never thought I'd say this, but thank you for the two-a-days at Camp Brotherhood. It truely was an experience."

I read somewhere that his Highschool number was #28 (I hope all the schools retire his jersey for which he has coached in honor of him) but those who were coached by him or knew him well he will always be #1 in our hearts.

God bless and Semper FI!!!

I was sadden to hear about Terry’s death….Terry was an assistant coach @ Jesuit High in Portland Or. 1968 thru 1971 when I graduated and also taught. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. Terry had an exceptional amount of energy and was always a positive role model. Terry and I enjoyed a great relationship…I was small but tough and played wide out and defensive back..he would always tell us back the bigger they are the harder they would fall. I know Terry will be missed a great deal by his family and friends and those young leaders he coached and mentored along the way. I read all the articles on the net about Terry and wished I could have watched him coach. I currently still coach Youth football in the CYO program in the Portland area. I will be sure to let my kids know of Man that walked the talk to the end of his life here on earth. Please relay this message to his family and my condolences to a passionate man and friend who made a difference and left a legacy of toughness and compassion. God Bless Coach Ennis!

Kind Regards, Jeff Barron Class of 71 Jesuit High

I graduated from AMHS in 2004. I did not know Mr. Ennis as well as many other students from my high school. Instead I knew him through his impact on others. From the boys who believed in him and in themselves, who fought hard as a team and won the game, and who grew into young men through Terry's leadership and example...to the girls he held to high standards and never let be anything less than their best...Terry brought us all together, united as the AMHS family. He helped form us into the wonderful, creative, determined, successful people we are today. He touched so many lives with the gifts and graces he was given. Lives that would not be the same without his influence, his support, and unconditional love. You will be missed Mr. Ennis! Thank you for being a part of my life. May God bless you and keep you...until we meet again!
Sincerely,
Holly Kay Holzknecht

To the whole Ennis family I send my deepest condolences.Coach Ennis was and will always be a father figure in my life as he was the only coach I had in high school many people forget that he did coach soccer too. I don't know how experienced he was at soccer but all I know we were league champs and went to state. That's the type of coach he was, he brought the most talent you had out of you no matter if it was football, soccer,or even life.

My thoughts and best wishes go out to Frannie, Amy, Jenny, Joe and the entire Ennis family.

I graduated from Stanwood High School and had the privilege of playing for Coach Ennis during his first 2 years as a head football coach. Even though it was Terry’s first head coaching position, there was not a hint of inexperience or lack of confidence – he was born to coach and motivate young men. Terry immediately galvanized our team and taught us how to succeed regardless of the circumstances. As I reflect back, our entire team believed that Terry was the best coach that you could have and history has proven that we were right. What was truly remarkable was that Terry was 27 years old at the time.

Coaching meant much more than practice and games to Coach Ennis, he was constantly on vigil regarding the other aspects of your life as well (possibly to make sure you would be eligible for the upcoming game or season??). Also, even though Fran and Terry were busy raising twin babies and another young child during their time in Stanwood, they opened up their home for team meetings and other gatherings. Those efforts were always enjoyed and appreciated by all involved.

I have never forgotten those years at Stanwood and all that I learned from Coach Ennis. Like many others, I too wished that my children would have had the opportunity to play for Coach Ennis. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Wanted to express my sympathy to the Ennis family on the passing of Coach Ennis. I was his manager at Renton HS in '86 and '87. He continued to influence my life even after graduation, writing to me on active duty in the navy. Washington HS football will not be the same without you coach, but heaven has gained from our loss.

I was so lucky to be able to play football for coach Ennis for 3 years. He was a genius, and an incredible coach. I was just one of many who lacked natural & physical talent but was coached into a solid Cascade Bruin football player. My greatest high school memories involve the hard work that was done on the football field. I want to send my condolences to his family. He was a true legend and will be missed.

I was Terry's Mom's hairdresser during the mid 70's though mid 90's. There was never a prouder parent than Ann Ennis. She shared many stories about all of her children and grandchildren, but I remember when Terry moved from Renton to Everett, she was delighted. She attended Terry's games and knew he was as gifted a coach as his father Jim was!
The Ennis legacy will live on for generations, because of the multitude of men who have become coaches with Jim and Terry as their models!
May your memories give you comfort, and God grant you peace.

There are few people in a lifetime that inspire those around them to be better. I don't think it's always by accomplishments or deeds. I think it is more an expression of their humanity and their treatment of those about them. I have known Terry since 1958 when my family moved here to Everett and I went to South. We graduated from EHS together in 1962. In between we played some sports together and went to classes together and started to move toward adulthood. Looking back from all of these years, I think that God had something more planned for Terry than all of the rest of us. It was to be that inspiration for some of us that drives us to be better than we are. My thoughts and prayers are with Fran and all of the Ennis family at your loss. I am a better person because of Terry's touch on my life. I think we all are.

I was team doctor for terry and amhs for the last 8 years and a fellow parisioner. I can't say enough good things about how he guided those boys including two of my sons who will always cherish their football memories and the lessons in life that he taught them. My whole family became fans of his at AMHS and we will always carry a little bit of him with us in our hearts.

Mrs Ennis,
Please accept my deepest sympathy for you loss.
Terry and I were classmates at Jackson Elementary School. Our teacher, Pete Lee had us do a talent show and Terry and Howard Bargreen sang a duet of the current Elvis Presley hit, "Blue Suede Shoes." It was the first time I had ever heard the song and everytime I heard it after that, I would think of Terry and Howie singing it. I would occasionally cross paths with another classmate from that time, Carl Windsor, and we would talk about that performance. Terry had a way of sticking with you always.

As a Mariner Alum Terry's Bruin teams were a thorn in our side. He was a Field General to the letter and held an unbeatable persona. It wasn't until I worked with the man, at Cascade, that I saw what a wonderful human he was. Always with a positive word to the staff but more so to the students, he was a wonderful influence to all that knew him. Terry will be always missed.

To the Ennis family we send our thoughts, prayers and thanks. My husband and I knew the Coach through our daughters Sara and Maria and as parents at AMHS. Every once in awhile Maria would hear Coach giving a pep talk to the boys after practice or just before a game. She would say "Mom,Dad Coach gives the most outstanding talks, he's amazing!" Our lives revolve around the football schedule every season. The nights spent under the lights watching the "game" will bring us many happy memories. Over the past week I feel I've gotton to know the man. One who is held in very high esteem amoung the kids, staff and families at AMHS. Thank you Coach for guiding and inspiring all of us! I got to know Coach Ennis from the East/West Football games by working at McDonald's. We would feed the players their opening day meal, and then a couple of meals the rest of the week. During the following years, I was able to go to some of games, even watching the 1991 State Championship Game in the Kingdome. He was such a wonderful human being. My family would see him in church on Sunday mornings. I always told him that I would love him to coach my 2 boys. They missed out be a couple of years. They both would have learned alot about being both a football player and a good citizen. Terry will be missed.

I had the pleasure of playing for Coach Ennis during his first 2 seasons at Cascade High School, 1988-1989. In the 2nd year Coach brought the program to the top of the WESCO 3A standings (including a 5th place State ranking), guided us to the playoffs for the first time in over 10 years, and began a streak of 10 straight years of WESCO 3A championships, including a State Championship in the 1991 season. Coach Ennis was the driving force behind a group of young men each and every fall season and throughout the remainder of the year. He was strict, discipline focused, hard-driving, fair and constantly focused on teamwork and dedication to a single purpose – perfection. There was never a time during my Senior season that we didn’t believe in Coach and his mission for us and the program…IF IT IS TO BE, IT’S UP TO ME was our slogan and mission.

I ran into Coach here and there throughout my years after graduation in 1990. There was never a time that he did he not recognize me, call me by name and ask me how my life was going and where it was going. I continued to follow his coaching exploits including the games this year with his team at ABMHS with the far off hopes that someday my son Jett would have the opportunity to play for a great Coach, Teacher and Man.

My family and I send our thoughts and positive karma out to Mrs. Ennis, Amy, Jenny and Joe for the loss of a husband, father and friend.

Coach Ennis will be missed…but never forgotten.

My family sends their deepest condolences to the Ennis Family. I too had the pleasure to play for Coach Ennis. He came to Renton High in 1978 - the same year as I did as a freshman. Little Joey (I mean Joe) was our ball boy. He was a man of principle who emphasized hard work, dedication and attention to detail. The number of lives that have been touched positively by him is unmeasurable. He was truly a father figure for countless many. The football memories are are for life, but the character development of young people will last for generations.

TERRY CAST A LARGE SHADOW.

I last saw him at Pinky's funeral. I knew he had cancer, but he looked good. I really thought he would overcome it.

He became a legend in his own time. All of our lives have been changed by the benefits learned in the Everett athletic programs from the late fifties and early 60's. Terry had the privelege and drive to continue the traditions, and in so doing, became the largest of all those who came before.

I think that the newspaper statement Dennis made, about the fact that Terry was smarter than the rest of us, was certainly true. He spent his life in the programs he loved, continuing to foster and develope coaches, students, athletes, and others, not only to become great individuals of good character and strength, but for some, to carry the traditions to other schools and areas, developing a wider span for the develpement of his programs.

We are all very proud of Terry and his accomplishments, and like you, do not understand why the Lord decided to take him; but it must have been for some larger task.

My prayers are with the family, his players, his coaches, and his beloved program. He is with the Lord now, but his shadow will remain, continuing to influence this generation, and the generations to come.

He is an enduring example to us all.

After reading 8 pages, for now anyway, of memories, life lessons, condolences and expressions of sympathy it's truly hard to find the words to express how I feel about a man who touched my life in so many ways.

I was blessed to play for Terry in those first years at Stanwood. I remember coming home to tell my father about this new young coach we had, how cool he was and how much fun it was going to be to play for him. My dad asked his name, of course I said Terry Ennis, he said "if he's Jim Ennis' son your a lucky guy". At the time I didn't know what he meant but I certainly know now. Oh it was cool alright but it was HARD work in fact the best hard work of my life.

Our family is doubly blessed my dad having played for Jim and me for Terry, I only wished my son could have played for him. I could list many things I remember about Terry and how he not only touched my life but my families life and those around me but safe to say he was a tremendous man, husband, father, coach, mentor and friend. We have all lost a truly unique and wonderful person.

Fran, Joe, Jenny and Amy it hard to express in words how Lauretta and I feel for your loss, simply know our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was at work when I caught a glimpse of the newspaper yesterday that told about Mr. Ennis on the cover. Instantly my mind flashed back to Cascade and the one time I was stupid enough to get into trouble and have to go visit him. I don't even remember what I did, I think fighting, but I knew I didn't want to do it again. He was a great man, a great coach, and a great leader. It is sad for the world to lose such a tremendous person.

"We're Ennis Together"

Terry never let you down. He was a straight shooter. He would do and say exactly what was needed. He had a way of bringing the excellence out of a person that they never knew existed within.

My wife and I had three children graduate from Archbishop Murphy High School. He made an impact on each one of them, on the field or in the classroom. Terry gave me a chance too. I was just a parent hoping to help out however I was needed. I became the "Voice of the Wildcats" as the PA Announcer at all the home games. Wildcat football was always exciting and couldn't be missed. I have been blessed to see almost every single football game the Wildcats ever played. I was even struck (at the last moment) with “Wildcat Fever” and flew to Las Vegas to watch the team… well of course, if I did that, how could I not drive down the street a ways to Tumwater to watch Terry and our Wildcats play football!

It has been absolutely awesome to see the impact of Terry on football, sports and the entire growth of the school!

I pray that we will all be a blessing to the memory of Terry Ennis, by being all “Ennis” together, to remember the lessons learned and to be a “Terry Ennis” to all those around us, by bringing out the best in others!

Thank you Terry and God bless you!

Love in Christ,

Coach Ennis was a great man. It was an honor and privledge to have met and known him. He was very inspirational in our son growing up from a boy to a fine young man. Although our son was terribly affected by the loss of his coach. Coach Ennis has given him what he needs to heal his heart and he will be a leader for his team, school, family and community because of the difference the coach made in his life. Thank you. I was 6 and you 10 when my Dad was officiating a basketball game and your Dad hustled us to the coaches room to get away from an angry parent. I never for got that and when we were in school, you at Everett HS and and me at Meadowdale MS and then Meadowdale HS, you were the one I wanted to play like. So many of us in the same league those 4 to 5 years, Eric, Keith, Jim, Gary, What a fraternity and you didn't know it but you were like the president of that club. I have recently been honored with the Dave Duvall award and owe a lot of that to you being a part of my live. You will be missed dear Friend. I had the blessed opportunity to work closely with Terry on a daily basis for 10 years when we were both Assistant Principals at Cascade. Day in and day out I saw how he reached out to every student and I mean EVERY student. When my son entired Cascade I required him to get involved with the football program because I wanted him to be involved with Coach Ennis and his program. My son, being a soccer player, became a kicker for Coach and played for him for four years. Today, he is benefiting from the life lessons that he learned being in Coach's program. To quote my son, "He was a strong headed person with the desire in his eyes masked only by his will to help people become better in life."
Thank you Fran, Joe, Jenny, and Amy for sharing Terry with us so we all became better in life.

Ennis Family,
It has been nearly 20 yrs since I was with your family. My relationship with Mr. Ennis was not one of a coach, but as a father figure. I feel blessed to have gotten to know your family. You will never know how much influence you all had in my life. I can hope that my boys will have a role model like Mr. Ennis in their lives. Mr. Ennis will never be forgotten...

Coach Ennis was one of the greatest men i have ever met. He showed me and helped me learn the greatest lessons in life that I would need to prepare myself for my current military life. When i began to play for him i was unsure of what to think. But what i found was a kind and loving man who would help me push myself to my greatest limits. Who would not only guide me to be great on the football field but in every other aspect of my life. I will never forget him and the lessons i learned from him. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.

It was an honor for me to be able to recognize Terry and his 1991 State Championship Cascade High School football team with a resolution from the floor of the House when they visited the Washington State Legislature. I took the time to leave my chair on the floor of the House to go into the gallery and personally congratulate Terry, as we both knew each other by reputation and were fellow Everett High graduates. Cascade High School was in part of my legislative district at that time.
What Terry accomplished with all the young men he has coached over the years, money or actions from the state can not buy. He gave them a solid base from which to grow and be positive, contributing members of society. Thank you Terry for your service to our youth and community.

I was part of the Ennis household in the 80's. Being best friend's with Joe and Jenny. I spent countless hours and days with the family always feeling at home. Even being lucky enough to be a ball boy for Renton High, experiencing Terry at his finest, on the sideline. Rest in peace Terry. To Fran,Amy,Joe, and Jenny I'm thinking about you

Terry Ennis was a wonderful coach, teacher and man. He always had time for his students. As the Youth Minister at St. Mary Magdalen, I worked with Terry on occasion. He loved to coach, but the education of his students and football players was his number one priority. Terry took interest in each of his students. He was there for the player that lost a parent, just as he was when a player was having personal problems. The first year I met Terry, I wondered how on earth he keep all those kids straight. When I asked him, he smiled at me and said "Practice & just a little luck." I will always remember Terry for being not only a great coach, but a great man. He was a wonderful role model to thousands of High School students who will have a better life because of the lessons they learned from Coach Ennis. My prayers are with the Ennis family at this sad time.

My son was lucky enough to be able to play for Coach Ennis. Being invovled with Coach over the last 7 years. I have come to understand a man that lived life well and also always gave 110%, 100% of the time. The one thing about Coach Ennis was that beside being a Coach, he was most of all your best friend. People like him help mold our kids for the future. His presents will never be gone from the ground that he loved and the people that loved him.
Coach is not gone from us, he has just moved up to the Press Box to get a better veiw of the game.
God Bless you

Actually I knew his father Jim more than I did Terry. His record speaks for itself. While he was at Cascade he worked with our son Bill. We met several times and he was certainly an engaging man. How ironic that he would follow closely behind Coach Norm Lowery. Our best to the family.

To Coach Ennis I say thank you for devoting so much of your time to coaching young men like my son. I only need to look at the tremendous sadness I see in his face now to know how deeply your passing has touched him. He told me last night that instead of only one of you on the gridiron there will be 60 since a part of you will be in each one of the Archbishop Murphy Wildcats football team. This year is for you Coach.

To his family, I can't thank you enough for so generously sharing so much of his time with us. Truly, his dedication to his players was made possible only with the love and support of his family.

It was very hard for all of us to hear the news of Mr. Ennis' death. He was a great coach and teacher, but more importantly a first rate man.

Our entire school prayed for your family and the Archbishop Murphy community on Wednesday morning at our weekly chapel. May the Lord give you peace, strength and comfort for this difficult time.

On behalf of the students and staff at King's High School, we are so sorry for your loss.

This week, the Knights are on the same sideline as the Wildcats. Coach Ennis will be missed.

I just talked to terry a month ago and I am in shock...he seemed to be doing so well,he had just finish summer football and was looking forward to a good season this year. the Ennis's had a cabin just down from us at Juniper Beach, and when he was a high star at Everett High I was in the 7th grade and I thought he was superman. every time I visited my family I always looked for Terry,as I too coach and have for 30 years, and like to pick his brain..the one thing I will always remember is his class, zest for life, and with all his success still a very humble guy ....Iam sure this is a hugh passing in the community. My prayers go out to the family and I will sure miss not seeing him in the summer.

Although I quickly developed a deep respect for Terry as my Assistant Principal at Cascade High, it was not until I had an experience with my 6th period English class that I truly understood the impact he had on the lives of our students. With the exception of three young women, this class was comprised of young men, many of whom were on the football team. Located at the end of the day, 6th period can often be a challenge as students have performed for hours in their other classes. This group, however, was remarkable. They were consistently focused, respectful, and hard-working. One day, I pulled aside our quarterback and commented to him how impressed I was with the class, especially his fellow players. He replied, "Coach Ennis would expect nothing less of us."

I consider myself fortunate to have worked with a man so exceptional at inspiring our students. Terry Ennis was a man of integrity who taught us so much.

My Dad knew Father, Jim and I was in junior and senior high with sister Molly and brother-in-law Rick Stubrud. Terry was respected by everyone who knew him, and is another Ennis who contributed so much to Western Washington high school football. My deepest sympathies to family and friends. Mr. Ennis will be greatly missed.

I'll never forget that day in July of 2000. It was a life-changing experience for me. I met with Terry Ennis, First year Archbishop Murphy Athletic Director and Head Coach of a Brand new football program. I had covered Terry's Cascade Teams since the early 90's with KRKO in Everett. This time I approached him with the idea of doing Color Commentary for the station's 2nd High School Football Broadcast Crew that I was assembling. It was a great meeting, we hit it off more as friends, than coach and reporter. I got to know Terry the person more and discovered his great sense of humor! He said he would think about doing color overnight and let me know. I was hopeful, I said a prayer...And, my prayer was answered. Even though he had a full schedule and a challenging task ahead with his new program. He was up for doing radio and thought "It would be fun". Well, it was the beginning of a an incredible run with Terry and Archbishop Murphy. We had a BLAST. Terry was a natural. Every Friday Night was special. His Hot Dog ratings at the stadium's became an entertaining addition to his ever-precise analysis. Through the years the Archbishop Murphy schedule moved more to Friday nights and Terry wasn't able to join us as much. So his son Joe took his place and we continued to have fun in the same fashion. We broadcast the State Championship Games from the Tacoma Dome in 2002 and 2003. The atmosphere was surreal and magical. I was so happy for Terry and so happy for his son, broadcasting next to me. I lost my father at an early age and gotta admit I lived vicariously through Joe on those occasions. I was proud of Terry like he was my father! And, there are so many more great memories of Terry and the school from the past seven years. I'm going to miss Coach tremendously, but, as I found at practice on the day he entered into Heaven. His Spiritual presence was the wind at our backs to push us through it. And will continue to be there for us!

He was "Simply the Best"
