Jo Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 6, 2007.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Davis, a Republican who represented southeastern Virginia for seven years, died Saturday morning after a two-year battle with breast cancer, her office said.

Davis, 57, died at her home in Gloucester.

Davis was found to have breast cancer in 2005 and had a recurrence this year. Her health took a turn for the worse during the past week, her office said.

She became Virginia's first woman elected to Congress in 2000, and she was a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee.

"She inspired Virginians as she battled breast cancer while continuing to serve the commonwealth," Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, a Democrat, said in a statement.

Her first piece of legislation, passed by the House in 2001, increased the life insurance benefit paid to survivors of military members killed on duty.

Before Congress, Davis served four years in the Virginia House of Delegates.

A conservative who came from modest means, Davis was known for her unquenchable inquisitiveness and how quickly and deeply she learned about any legislative issue.

She attended Hampton Roads Business College; she got her real estate license in 1984 and her real estate broker's license four years later. In 1990, she opened Jo Ann Davis Realty.

She underwent chemotherapy treatments and a mastectomy when her cancer was first diagnosed in 2005. When the cancer returned, she underwent chemotherapy again and often monitored hearings from home.

Survivors include her husband, Chuck, two sons and a granddaughter.

Chuck,
I appreciated the friendship I shared with Jo Ann while our offices were next to each other in Yorktown. She was so sweet to help me with a real estate transfer during my divorce at no cost.

While it didn't take much of her time, her days were very busy. The expense of a title company or attorney to do the same task would have come at a difficult time in my life. It was a simple act that meant a lot to me.

Hopefully I was able to return the favor in other ways from time to time.

My heart goes out to you and your family. Jo Ann was a wonderful lady. I was proud to have her represent me in the House, but more honored to share her friendship.

Sincerely, Jan Bates

Words alone don't describe the hurt inside I feel for her loss. I"m a young 31 year old woman who only met her twice. However, I helped to campaign for her.

I'll miss her deeply. Heaven gained an angel on Saturday. She was classy from the inside out.

Mr. Chuck and family,
My prayers are with you all.

Joann was an amazing person. For those of you that never had the chance to meet her truly missed an opportunity of a life time. I had the chance to meet Joann at my parents’ house in Newport News, Va. She showed great concern for waste water issues my family and neighbors have had for more than 30 years. I showed up from my home in North Carolina to visit with my family (my Dad was also dying of cancer) to have the honor of meeting Joann. From the second I walked in the back yard, to the last minute of Joann leaving, I felt nothing less than warmth, sincerity, her pleasure to be of assistance. I truly felt I had met a new friend. Joann never made you feel like anything other than just that, a FRIEND! Joann came to my parents’ house quite a few times after that. Not as a politician, but as a member of the community. She was someone whom would do anything in the world for you. For those of you that had the opportunity of being in contact with Joann, you have truly been blessed. For those of you that didn’t; just know that if she had ever had the chance to meet you, you too would have been her friend. May Joann be remembered for her services to the government, to her friends, and the people that she was able to pull together as a team. Her courageous fight against breast cancer is a tribute to humanity and most of all to her faith in our Lord, Jesus Christ.

With sincere sympathy and condolences to all of Jo Ann’s family, friends, and co-workers.
God be with you Chuck and Family
Love always,
Deputy P.L.Cook

To the Davis family;
We had the great pleasure of meeting Jo Ann when we moved to Newport News in 1994. We had been referred to her company by friends who had moved there, when our house deal fell through with her agent, Jo Ann called me personally and decided to come out of retirement and become our agent. We had so much fun looking at houses, she was a great lady and one that I am proud to have called a friend. Our loss but heaven's gain. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this time of sorrow. May God be your comfort during this time.

Please know that we are thinking of you and wish that I had the right words to make this loss more bearable. John lost his mother about 10 years ago, so he wanted me to tell you that he can definitely relate to the pain that you are going though and he is so sorry to hear about your mom, as was I. She was always such a wonderful lady and always so nice to me. I know that she was a member of Congress and that is how most people knew her, but to me, she was just a nice band mom. My parents also send their wishes to you, Charlie, and to your brother and dad. You know how to find me if you need anything.

I had the honor and privilege of helping JoAnne's successful campaigns. I worked to ensure JoAnne got the opportunity to protect the integrity and traditional family values that JoAnne lived and believed, and stood proud to defend and preserve. I know that I know that I know she is wth our Lord and Savior, fully restored and at peace and she will surely hear "Well done my good and faithful servant" I pray her family will be lifted up with all these kind sentiments and many blessings.

Davis Family,
I have such good memories of my contact with Mrs Davis. I met her initially through a mutual friend during middle school and then again when it came time for me to apply to colleges and the service academies were at the top of my list I got to meet her again. I was thrilled upon receipt of her nomination for two straight years to the Naval Academy. Though I did not end up going there, the trust and belief in what I could do gave me something that I will continue to cherish and will aspire to live up to what she thought I was capable of. Sincerely Yours.

I met Mrs. Davis quite a few years ago when she was working in the state legislature. As a firefighter, I am very grateful to her for the hard work she did for every one of us be it paid, volunteer, local or federal. She was the biggest friend we ever had and her door was always open, she really cared for all of us and had first hand knowledge of where our thoughts were at and where we needed help to get there. Chief (Tinky) Davis, thank you and your family for sharing her with us, she will never be forgotten and she will be forever missed. My thoughts and prayers, as well as those of firefighters from Virginia and all over the country, are with you and your family.

I was very sorry to hear of Jo Ann`s passing. I knew that she had been fighting breast cancer upon its reoccurence. I lost my wife, Dell, to liver cancer on Mar. 15 of this year. It is a devastating disease and I can identify with the grief and emotions that you and your family are experiencing. She was a special lady and I enjoyed working with her. While I did not her personally as I would have liked to, I did have the opportunity of learning more about her political status because I was blessed with the opportunity of talking to Joanne on a few occasions about concerns for contract acquisitions for Northrop Grumman future work. Through our conversations, Joanne was always upbeat and genuinely expressed concerned for the welfare of both people/economy.

Yet, I never knew what stage at her battle she was at because not anyone that ever talked with her when she was going through her battle would ever know. She was so strong. Over time, I came to know that she was a woman who was extremely compassionate about what she was doing. For her strength, character, action, and compassion she truly will be missed. I hope her legacy lives on.

Dear Davis Family,
Our prayers have been answered and Mrs. Davis is with her Saviour. No more pain or worry. In May I lost my sister to this awful cancer and I know how you are suffering and how you miss her. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. May the Lord Bless and Keep You.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Davis family. Mrs. Davis was a true Lady and Stateswoman. She used commonsense and truly represented the people of her district. She touched many lives and her spirit will live on in thouse live she made a mark.
