Jim Mitchell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2007.
SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Jim Mitchell, a Pro Bowl tight end for the Atlanta Falcons in the '60s and '70s, died after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was 60.

Feldhaus Memorial Chapel, which is handling the funeral services, confirmed Mitchell's death Monday.

A friend found Mitchell unconscious on the front steps of his home Saturday morning, the Shelbyville Times-Gazette reported. He later died at a hospital. Mitchell, who had turned 60 on Friday, suffered from diabetes in recent years, eventually losing his eyesight.

Mitchell played for the Falcons from 1969-79 and was named to the Pro Bowl following the 1969 and 1972 seasons. He ranks fourth in Falcons' history with 305 career receptions and 4,358 yards receiving. He had 31 career touchdowns.

The former Shelbyville high school star attended Prairie View A&M in Texas.

After retiring from the NFL, Mitchell coached at Morehouse and Morris Brown colleges. He returned to Shelbyville and served as a volunteer assistant coach for its two high school football teams.

Jim used to get softball trophies from us at AAA Trophies in Decatur and we never met a nicer person, a pleasure to know. He never acted like a star athlete, just a polite, friendly man. I remember he could pound a softball with incredible power when I went out to see him play. When he came to the plate, everyone noticed. Of course, I enjoyed watching him play for the Falcons earlier. I was saddened to know his health was declining in recent years. My sympathy to the family. The world needs more Jim Mitchells.

Although I only knew Jim through a number of his friends in Shelbyville, Tenn., I really appreciated his football talents each time I would see him play. I can truly say that he will be missed by all.

Damian and Davin your father was a close friend of mine. I called to wish him Happy "60th" Birthday early Friday morning. He and my grandson's birthday are the same, so he told me to tell him happy b'day. We had a very nice converstation, as always. Also I wanted to let him know that a college friend of his wanted to get in touch with him that day. He was excited and was looking forward to their visit. I heard from his college friend that they had a wonderful visit and a good time that day. Jim was a special person to me and will be sorely missed. But more importantly, he was a Christian. He and I talked about the Bible and salvation, his aches and pains and eternity. I know that he resting with the Lord and looking down on us. Take care and know that he loved you all.

I remember watching Jim when I was a kid as a Falcons fan, and finally meeting him in 1991 at the last Falcons game at Fulton County. He was full of laughter and joy that day, and it gave me great pleasure to tell him how much joy he had brought to ME through the years. Godspeed, big Jim. The family is in my prayers. Love abides.

Right now a great man lays to rest
Who has conquered much
Giving his best.
May we never forget, what he has
Done for us all
Entertaining us
Playing for the Falcons
The wonderful game of football.

May the Almighty God of Comfort
Remember him in his book of life.

The Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort,
who comforts us in all our tribulation through the comfort
with which we ourselves are being comforted by God.”

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

To the Mitchell Family, my most sincere prayers and condolences are with you during your time of sorrow. Although, I lost touch with "Tennessee" over the years [I last saw Jim in Atlanta in 1978], I often thought about Jim. As others have stated, Jim was as great a person as he was a football player. Remember the 23rd Psalms as you go through this trying time.

May God Bless and keep you.

To the Mitchell family, you all are in my prayers in the homegoing of Jim. Growing up in Shelbyville "Pork Chop" was our hero. He is the homeboy that made it big-time and we were always proud of him. He was someone we all looked up to and tracked his playing career from PVAMU to the Falcons. The Falcons became my team just because Pork Chop played on it. I remember him when I was a little kid because he was in school at Harris High with my two oldest sisters, and my oldest sister dated him. I use to kid her that I could have had a NFL brother-in-law. Every time the Falcons were on TV, I had to watch to see Pork Chop play, win or lose. I just saw him two weeks ago in Shelbyville at a funeral and inspite of his health issues, he was still PorkChop. He will be missed, but be encouraged that he is in a better place with no more sickness and pain, and he is receiving his heavenly rewards from God. God needed a tight-end on heaven's football team, and he called Pork Chop into the game. PorkChop, we will miss you.

To my family, the bible says that a righteous man leaves an inheritance for his children and his children's children. I can honestly say that James not only left an inheritance for his own kids but for so many others outside of his own kids. I can say that I really thank God for James because so many times I would sit and listen to him talk about so many different things concerning business and life, which I could go on and on bout it. I just want to say thanks to God for allowing me to get to know and have a Righteous Man like James in my family, who also left me with something that I to can leave for my children's children.

Dear Mitchell family,

My heart is broken for you in the loss of Jim whom we affectionately knew as Pork Chop. He will be truly missed as he was a very valuable asset to our community. His contributions to our youth were invaluable and I vividly remember the football camps he would have there in Shelbyville.

We indeed have some very wonderful memories of his life, especially when he played football for the Harris High School Tigers, for the Prairie View Panthers, and for the Atlanta Falcons! We were so proud of our homeboy when he got drafted by the Falcons and bought that Grand Prix! I remember it well.

We stand with you and pray for and with you during this time of sorrow. May God's richest and best be yours during these coming days and beyond.

With warmest regards and sympathy,

Rev. John T. Flack III

I met Jim "Tennesee" Mitchell in 1968 when were students at Prairie View A & M. I had a student job washing dishes in the kitchen cafeteria, 5pm-8pm each night. The football players would always eat dinner after practice. Jim would sometimes come into the kitchen and ASK this skinny kid (me) for an extra tray of dessert for the players. To me he was so big and yet so humble, always quick to smile. Jim was truly a fine person.

Rest in Peace "MEAT". My thoughts and prayers go out to the Mitchell family. When I was growing up I can remember getting to know alot of the Falcons from the 70's era. Jim, Wallace, Claude, Steve, William and Al. I remember growing up with the Mitchell family and playing with Jim's sons, they were good friends. My dad and Jim played softball together. When I started playing footbal Jim offered to teach me to be a tight end. How many high school kids have that opportunity? Over the years we all just lost touch with each other. The last time I saw Jim was probably around 2002. Myself, my dad, and Jim went to see Wallace Francis speak at a local church. I can remeber Jim due to his failing eyesight had to be practically led around. I always looked up to these guys. These were real role models and class acts not like what our children have now to look up to.
