Lillian Ellison Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2007.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Lillian Ellison, professional wrestling's Fabulous Moolah, died Friday. She was 84.

Ellison died Friday, according to Dunbar Funeral Home in Columbia.

Born Mary Lillian Ellison in 1923, she was dubbed the Fabulous Moolah after saying she wrestled "for the money ... for the moolah."

She was a longtime champion and the first woman inducted into the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame. Her autobiography, "The Fabulous Moolah: First Goddess of the Squared Circle," was published in 2003.

Ellison grew up in the small Kershaw County community of Tookiedoo, the youngest of 13 children and the only girl.

Her daughter, Mary Austin, 66, said her mother had six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, loved her family and wrestling.

Her obituary from the funeral home lists 63-year-old Katie Glass of Columbia as Ellison's adopted daughter. Glass, known as "Diamond Lil," was a professional midget wrestler for 25 years. She said she was just 17 when she moved to Columbia to live with Ellison and learn to wrestle.

For Lillian...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. To the family of this great woman, I say to you, keep holding on to God's unchanging hands, and He will make everything alright. Take comfort in knowing that she is resting now and that she has received her championship title in Heaven. One day you will see her again!

I never met Moolah, but when I heard of her death, I felt like a little piece of me died, too. I have watched her matches all of my life. My earliest memory is watching wrestling on our b&w TV with my father in the '50s, and he always used to point to Moolah and tell me that she was proof a woman could do anything a man could do, so long as she set her mind to it. Remembering that thought is why I am an engineer today. I just finished reading her auto-biograpy two weeks ago, and all I can say is how lucky I am to have had such a good, decent, talented and classy woman for a hero.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family. May her Memory be Eternal!

I have been a fan of wrestling for many years. I am from the old school of wrestling, When wrestlers were wrestlers. These people that are doing their thing in the ring today have a whole lot to learn. When women were women were in the times of Ms. Ellison, they knew their stuff and were not afraid to show you what they knew, that is if you still did not understand. May God bless her family and her friends who loved her and to her fans keep her alive by shouting moolah at each match. Moolah rest in peace girl you deserve it. You paved the road for the ones that came behind you and are coming in the name of FABULOUS MOOLAH,

Dear Ellison Family,

I can remember seeing "The Fabulous Moolah" wrestle when I was a teenager in the mid eighties. I loved watching the WWF on the USA network and the NWA on the superstation in Atlanta. I got so much enjoyment and entertainment watching these guys and girls and it really brings back fond memories of days gone by forever. I feel a connection and a loss whenever I hear of a wrestler's death. Especially, one like Lillian as well as Road Warrior Hawk and "Ravishing" Rick Rude that I watched with friends "back in the day". People like Lillian are a part of my youth and growing up that I will always remember. God Bless and Keep You Lillian!

I once worked with Ernie Roth and Beautiful Bobby promoting wrestling
for Vince McMahon. I met Lillian on several occasions, and I had dinner with her a few times. In fact, I still have a Christmas photo card that she sent me.
Lillian really had a talent to get the croud going. I am very disappointed that I didn't have a
chance to see her before she passed
away. God Bless you Lillian, and
although she may not be with us,
Jesus said, "When we die, life has

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep;
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond’s glint on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn’s rain…
when you awaken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight;
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry:
I am not there…I did not die.
