Oscar Peterson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 24, 2007.
TORONTO (AP) - Oscar Peterson, whose early talent and speedy fingers made him one of the world's best known jazz pianists, died at age 82.

His death was confirmed by Hazel McCallion, mayor of Mississauga, Ontario, the Toronto suburb where Peterson lived. McCallion told The Associated Press that he died of kidney failure. The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said he died Sunday.

"He's been going downhill in the last few months, slowing up," McCallion said, calling Peterson a "very close friend."

During an illustrious career spanning seven decades, Peterson played with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie. He is also remembered for touring in a trio with Ray Brown on bass and Herb Ellis on guitar in the 1950s.

Peterson's impressive collection of awards include all of Canada's highest awards and honors, such as the Order of Canada, as well as a Lifetime Grammy (1997) and a spot in the International Jazz Hall of Fame.

His growing stature was reflected in the admiration of his peers. Duke Ellington referred to him as "Maharajah of the keyboard," while Count Basie once said "Oscar Peterson plays the best ivory box I've ever heard."

"The world has lost an important jazz player," said McCallion. "It isn't just a loss for Canada, he was world famous."

Born on Aug. 15, 1925, in a poor neighborhood southwest of Montreal, Peterson obtained a passion for music from his father Daniel, a railway porter and self-taught musician who bestowed his love of music to his five children, offering them a means to escape from poverty.

Peterson learned to play trumpet and piano at a young age, but after a bout with tuberculosis, had to concentrate on the latter.

He became a teen sensation in his native Canada, playing in dance bands and recording in the late 1930s and early 1940s. But he got his real break as a surprise guest at Carnegie Hall in 1949, after which he began touring the United States and Europe.

He quickly made a name for himself as a jazz virtuoso, often compared to piano great Art Tatum, his childhood idol, for his speed and technical skill.

He was also influenced by Nat King Cole, whose Nat King Cole Trio album he considered "a complete musical thesaurus for any aspiring Jazz pianist".

Peterson never stopped calling Canada home, despite his growing international reputation but at times felt slighted here, where he was occasionally mistaken for a football player, standing at 6 foot 3 (1.92 meters) and more than 250 pounds (113 kilograms).

In 2005 he became the first living person other than a reigning monarch to obtain a commemorative stamp in Canada, where he is jazz royalty, with streets, squares, concert halls and schools named after him.

Peterson suffered a stroke in 1993 that weakened his left hand, but not his passion or drive for music. Within a year he was back on tour, recording "Side By Side" with Itzhak Perlman.

As he grew older, Peterson kept playing and touring, despite worsening arthritis and difficulties walking.

"A jazz player is an instant composer," Peterson once said in a Canadian Broadcasting Corp. interview, while conceding jazz did not have the mass appeal of other musical genres. "You have to think about it, it's an intellectual form," he said.

What an honor to sign such a book. There is no piano like Oscar Peterson's piano. I have his cd's on my player at work all the time. So beautiful and relaxing. Love that music.

Oscar Peterson was the big BUZZ in the late sixties when I first heard him. Big Buzz...I mean big. He was such a beautiful person, I wanted to hear more - so went to the Library and got every record I could to listen to how he did what he did. Just listening was an education. There were lots of DVDs showing him in concert and in Canada. I played them again and again - it was truly educational and marvelous to even watch!
Please know that his vibe stretches around the globe and his influence will be felt for many years to come.

For Oscar...

You really rocked!

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

What a wonderfull gifted musician Oscar Peterson was and above all he will always always be in our hearts. I first heard Oscar Play in l955 when I bought a Verve Record that had him playing with Flip Phillips Gene Krupa Buddy Rich and all the greats. Man I knew right then and there that he was my boy my piano idol. He was incredible way back then and still today you can listen to anything by Oscar Peterson and still get the chills. I know he is in heaven now having a super tremendous jazz jam session with all of our boys. Oscar Peterson has never left us he is always with us. His piano expertise will be the measuring gauge for all piano professionals to emulate and try to come close. God Bless You Oscar Peterson we will forever love you and admire you.

Sixty years ago I had a steady baby-sitting job. Oscar walked in and out they went. I saw him quite often over the years. Now at 71 years old I have a lot of fond memories. He was always glad to sit, and talk about the old days. 'Til we meet again.

What a tragic loss to the music industry, to Canada, America and the rest of the world who adored him and his work.
Became a fan of Oscar Peterson in the mid 40's during Jazz at the Philharmonic and have followed his
career all over the U.S. at various venues.
THANK YOU OSCAR FOR ALL THOSE YEARS

As a teenager, I was already a fan when I met Oscar, Ray Brown and Herb Ellis in 1953. Oscar was always striving for perfection and self-expression in many forms; he was a great artist, a fine human being, an active humanitarian and a proud Canadian who loved his country and wanted it to live up to the highest standards. When it didn't, he let us know and we were better for it. His abiding affection can be heard in his monumental "Canadiana Suite."
Oscar Peterson is simply irreplaceable.

Oscar Peterson was my firsthero from the world of jazz - I saw him in about 1960 when he made a tour of the UK with JATP, what a wonderful occasion. Even in his later years when he was clearly becoming frail he was always what he was, a great musician. Thank you Oscar Peterson.

Mr. Peterson had a wonderful gift of playing music and he will be missed by many ones who knew him and enjoyed his music. Losing someone is not easy but soon in the near future so close at hand Jesus will call out to our loved ones and will see these ones come back to life and we will be able to say as 1 Corinthians 15:55 says: "Death where is your sting?"

I first heard Oscar Peterson at the London House in Chicago way back in the sixties. I was a teenager, and into jazz. It was a small club, I couldn't have been more than 20 feet from him! Oscar was, without a doubt, my favorite pianist then, and he has remained so all these years.

I saw him recently at Ravinia. He was clearly struggling. The ideas were pouring out of him, but his poor hands could not do them justice on the keyboard. I cannot imagine how much strength and perseverance it took for him to continue to play.

I used to have dreams that I could play the piano, and in those dreams I was always playing like Oscar. It was the closest I have ever come to pure joy.

I cannot imagine the world without him. Thank you Oscar, for all the pleasure and amazement you brought me.

You will live on for decades to come Mr. Peterson - the man may pass on, but his music "lives" on forever. This great artist changed my life. My first time seeing Oscar Peterson was solo piano for a CBC radio concert, at the Manitoba Centenial Concert Hall. My father and two brothers were with me. We are all pianists, my father classically trained from Germany. We were in awe with the superb performance of Oscar and compared him to the likes of Franz Lizst. At the time I had been studying jazz guitar with Lenny Breau but Oscar's influence brought me back to the piano. I later tuned the pianos at that very concert hall but never had the opportunity to tune for Oscar. I play and improvise on his compositions to this day. His music has influenced me the most.

To Oscar's family and children: The music world will certainly be a lesser place without him. I've admired his many works I've listened to over the years and had the privilege of attending one of his live performances with my son at the TD Jazz Concert Series. As Oscar slowly crossed the stage to his piano, I pointed to him and told my son: "Look, there's a living legend right before your eyes".

I was just 17, a high school senior and just finished a high school track event at UConn in the spring of 52. I had a 46 Pontiac and some older friends who were attending UConn, wanted a ride home. We lived in Bridgeport, Conn. On the way home they talked me into taking them to NYC to make the jazz scene. They were surprised I was into jazz. After getting my Mom's approval, off we went. Birdland, Bop City and others. And then the 52nd. St Club. That is where I saw Oscar, Ray and Ed Thigpen. I heard alot of Oscar, but to see those fingers move across those ivory keys like lightening was amazing. That is one of my most fond memories of Oscar. He will be missed. He is already missed.
