"Weepin" Willie Robinson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 1, 2008.
BOSTON (AP) - "Weepin" Willie Robinson, a blues singer who performed with Steven Tyler and Bonnie Raitt but also spent time homeless, has died. He was 81.

Robinson died Sunday in a fire started by a cigarette he was smoking in bed, the Boston Fire Department said.

He worked at a benefit concert with Tyler and two Boston Music Awards shows, in 2005 and again this month.

Robinson was born in Atlanta and picked cotton and fruit with his family up and down the East Coast. After spending time in the Army in the 1940s, he became a master of ceremonies and doorman at blues clubs in Trenton, N.J., where he met and became friends with B.B. King and other musicians. He eventually sang with King's 21-piece orchestra.

Robinson settled in Boston in 1959 and played in clubs, but by 2005 he was living on the street and out of touch with his family. Blues performers learned of his situation, held a benefit concert, and made sure he was fed and clothed.

Robinson later performed everywhere from local clubs to the hallways of the rest home where he lived.

You made my stay at the Jamaica Plain VA Hospital in the summer of 1997 very enjoyable with the two shows you and your group put on for the veterans. Both shows were just great and I was saddened today when I read online of your passing. God Speed.

Hello GrandPa in Heaven! I was online today & decided to look at your guest book. I miss talking to you on the phone. I was so glad that i got the chance to meet you. Growing up i've always known that my grandfather was a blues singer but I never got the change to meet him or any of my grand parents because they all died before I was born, so meeting you was a blessing. I remember that day all too well. We was washing clothes in Newark NJ & my aunt Rainey with her friendly self was talking to some gentleman. He was telling her a story about his ex wife leaving him for some man. My aunt stated my father lives in boston & that he was a blues singer, but I haven't seen him since I lived with him when i was 22 yrs old. The man asked whats you fathers name? She stated Willie Robinson they call him Weepin Willie! the man stared laughing he said your father isn't dead that's the man that stole my wife. We all was started laughing but was also shocked, surprized, happy & blessed to find out that she were still alive. He told my aunt to giver him her number and he would call his ex wife and have my grand father call us. That's just what he did ( SO I THANK YOU) I don't remember the was name, but what he did brought you into our lives again. Any way you called us that very evening & 2 weeks later Myself, my cousin Makia & aunt Rainey was on a train to Boston MA. We stayed with you for a week. You took us to meet your friends, to clubs, showed us around. I remember going to the House Of Blues, & a club that had different levels. You said some of the floors was for young people like Makia & I. We watched you proform with amazment. I've never in my life saw so many white people dance so well besides on tv. You called us My & Ty funny because Makia was My and Me Maiysha was Ty. Once we returned home we never lost contact again. You came to Newark to stay with Aunt Rainy & to Trenton to stay with my mother Debbie. You also got a chance to meet the rest of you grand children. I thank you & god for bring you back into our lives. WE LOVE & MISS YOU DEARLY. REST IN PEACE. TELL MY GRANDMA ALICE I SAID HELLO.

Mr Willie,
When I first called you that about 20 yrs ago,you asked me how I knew you by that name. I said I had met you about 20 yrs. before that when you were with Tommy Hunt. As many times as I had seen you since I never put the pieces together til that night. We laughed so much about that.
Well you go on and play with Buddy and Emmett and Smitty, etc. Save some seats. We'll all be along in our time.
RIP Weep

How wonderful it was that Weepin Willie recorded his solo album a few years back. We now have a meaningful example of the music he gave us!

Weep at the door of Grumpy's

Grumpy's Pub

January 1, 2008

All of the bands who play at Grumpy's have to live up to the standard set by Weep---the man and his music. Weep set the bar. Weep was the real deal, he actualy lived it and we reaped the reward of his struggle with powerful performances done with Mack Daddy Style. I don't know where Grumpy's would be if we hadn't found Weep. All I do know is that our lives are richer for having known him and his music. Weep was our friend and he will be missed.
