Gordon Hinckley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 27, 2008.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Gordon B. Hinckley, the Mormon church's oldest president who presided over one of the greatest periods of expansion in its history, died Sunday. He was 97.

Hinckley, the 15th president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died of complications arising from old age, church spokesman Mike Otterson said.

"His life was a true testament of service, and he had an abiding love for others," said U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican and fellow Mormon. "His wit, wisdom, and exemplary leadership will be missed by not only members of our faith, but by people of all faiths throughout the world."

Hinckley had been diagnosed with diabetes and was hospitalized in January 2006 for the removal of a cancerous growth in his large intestine. In April 2006, he told a church conference he was in the "sunset of my life" and "totally in the hands of the Lord."

By unfailing tradition, at a church president's death, the church's most senior apostle is ordained within days on a unanimous vote of the Council of the Twelve Apostles. The most long-serving apostle now is Thomas S. Monson, 80.

The church presidency is a lifetime position. Before Hinckley, the oldest church president was David O. McKay who was 96 when he died in 1970.

Hinckley, a grandson of Mormon pioneers, was president for nearly 13 years. He took over as president and prophet on March 12, 1995 and oversaw one of the greatest periods of expansion in church history. The number of temples worldwide more than doubled, from 49 to more than 120 and church membership grew from about 9 million to more than 12 million.

Like his contemporary, Pope John Paul II, he became by far his church's most traveled leader in history. And the number of Mormons outside the United States surpassed that of American Mormons for the first time since the church, the most successful faith born in the United States, was founded in 1830.

"His leadership in humanitarian efforts around the world was matched only by his efforts in his own beloved state and community as a committed citizen," said Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, a Mormon. "He has stood as a remarkable example of selflessness, charity and humility and he will be greatly missed by all."

Hinckley began his leadership role in 1995 by holding a rare news conference, citing growth and spreading the Mormon message as the church's main challenge heading into the 21st century.

"We are dedicated ... to teaching the gospel of peace, to the promotion of civility and mutual respect among people everywhere, to bearing witness to the living reality of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the practice of his teachings in our daily lives," Hinckley said.

Over the years, Hinckley labored long to burnish the faith's image as a world religion far removed from its peculiar and polygamous roots. Still, during his tenure the Roman Catholic Church, Southern Baptist Convention and United Methodist Church - the three largest U.S. denominations - each declared that Mormon doctrines depart from mainstream Christianity.

"We are not a weird people," Hinckley told Mike Wallace on "60 Minutes" in 1996.

"The more people come to know us, the better they will understand us," Hinckley said in an interview with The Associated Press in late 2005. "We're a little different. We don't smoke. We don't drink. We do things in a little different way. That's not dishonorable. I believe that's to our credit."

Hinckley's grandfather knew church founder Joseph Smith and followed Brigham Young west to the Great Salt Lake Basin. He often spoke of the Mormon heritage of pioneer sacrifice and its importance as a model for the modern church.

"I think as long as history lasts there will be an interest in the roots of this work, a very deep interest," Hinckley said in a 1994 interview with the AP.

"Because insofar as the people of the church are concerned, without a knowledge of those roots and faith in the validity of those roots, we don't have anything," he said.

In 1997, Hinckley seemed to drive that point home in his orchestration of the lavish sesquicentennial celebration of the Mormons' arrival in the Salt Lake Valley. The yearlong festivities featured a TV-friendly reenactment of the dramatic Mormon exodus from the Midwest by handcart and covered wagon.

Born June 23, 1910, in Salt Lake City, Hinckley graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in arts and planned to attend graduate school in journalism. Instead, a church mission took him to the British Isles.

Upon his return, he became executive director of the newly formed Church Radio, Publicity, and Mission Literature Committee at $60 a month. Hinckley always worked for the church, except for a brief stint during World War II as a railroad agent.

Hinckley was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Pay Hinckley, whom he married in 1937. She died April 6, 2004.

President Hinckley was truely a huge influence on members and nonmembers lives. When the youth in San Antonio celebrated the new temple with a jubilee, he was there. At the dedication of the San Antonio temple, he shook my brothers' hand and said goodmorning to me. He was the ultimate saint of our time and i'm looking forward to President Monson's talk at General Conference. May God bless us and comfort us in our times of need

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

I just want to thank our Heavenly Father for such a wonderful spiritual man that I have been able to have in my life to help guide my family and I to hold on to the iron rod it is so difficult with all the worldly things around us. He has been a great example to us all. I feel extremely lucky to say I was able to shake his hand when I worked at the churches high rise; I worked the banquets and was given the honor to be able to serve President Hinckley at the time he was a counselor but still a President at the time and President Monson was also a counselor. President Benson was the Prophet and it was such a great and awesome feeling to be able to serve these great men. I will never forget the spirit I was able to feel with them all there for lunch. When you get to look them into there eyes it is like they look into your soul. President Hinckley had so much kindness, Love and did so much service. He even surprised our Stake meeting house at Stake Conference not long ago, who would ever think he would just drop into a Stake Conference. I started to think of when the Lord will come his is just going to drop in and all we can do is hope we have been living at our best trying to do our best and hope we are ready for it when it is our time to see the Savior. I can only wish to be even a part as good as he was. What a Great Man!! I will miss him my heart dropped when I heard he passed and in the same instance happy for him and his wife. I love him and I am so very thankful for our Heavenly Father to have chosen him to be our Prophet. I know President Monson will also be an awesome leader of the L.D.S. Church. My prayers are with this wonderful man and all of his family. May the Lord and Savior be with the family to comfort them in this time of there loss. I say this in the name of Jesus Christ Amen.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

I feel like I've lost a grandfather, thanks, Hinckley family, for sharing him with us so unselfishly all these years. I know it wasn't easy but I hope you feel it was worth it. What he gave me personally is of inestimable value and I will cherish his memory all the days of my life. I only wish I could have looked into those sparkling, mischevious, understanding eyes and told him myself what an impact he's had on my life and how much I love him. I prayed for his quick reunion with your mom because I knew how much it hurt him to be away from her but it took me a couple of days to be glad the Lord finally granted my petition. Thanks for everything, I'm sure my grief pales in comparison to your own, I wish there was something I could do or say to help you through it. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Ever Thankful for the gospel-my life now 3 years as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was touched by the beloved prophet. I, along with my two boys, are the pioneers in our family. It is because of his love for men, loving the youth, and the love he had for our Savior that I will see him in the eternities. If I follow and do my part this will be a sweet day...to mix and mingle and rejoice in the truthfulness of the gospel. I thank President Hinckley and his family. My prayers and condolences are offered as you mourn and grieve his daily departure in your lives, but joy comes in the morning when you see him again. He has the joy now as he has been reunited with dear loved ones and other great ones.

Sincerely,
Melanie, Daniel, and Brandon Enyart

President Hinckley is an amazing man. He will be dearly missed, but I know that his work is continuing on the other side. There is much work to be done. His example and his love for all of us will go on. I am grateful for the opportunity I've had to listen to his wisdom and words. God be with you till we meet again our Beloved Prophet.

We would like to send our condolences to the Hinckley family. He has been a wonderful profit. All 4 of our children grew up as young adults during his presidency. How grateful we are to have had him lead our church. We now have 8 grandchildren who love and looked up to him as well. The love that he had to share with the world will continue to make it a better place. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the family. Richard & Margaret Pitts

I am a convert on March 17th 2005. In a time of uncertainty for my health the sister misinaries came to my door. There was a instant trust and love for them both. I had been raised a christian and have always believed in the Father and his son Jesus Christ. But everytime I heard President Hinckley speak, there was that "still small voice" inside of me that somehow knew there was more. My husband was raised in the church and never pushed me because he said I had a kind heart and when it was time Hevanly Father would reveal all I needed to know. I am so ever grateful for the gospel, for the blessing of the church and to know I will be with my Heavenly Father again as well as my husband Michael and son Connor. Thank you President Hinckley for helping me see and most of all feel the unconditional love that could never be replaced. I am doing much better. "I am a child of God rich blessings are in store, If I but learn to do his will, I'll live with him once more" You will be missed, but we know you are in a much better place now. How happy you must be with your beloved again. We bless and pray for your family to have comfort in knowing they will be with you again too. Thank you all for sharing President Hinckley with us. And now you know the Truth!

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

None is higher than Christ Jesus cept the Father and He and the Father are one.

Many of his predecessors as President of the Church have done much for Genealogy and Family History work. As a glimpse to what he has done the following are some of the things he has done. Family Search Internet went live in 1999. Following it was many databases added to the site, among them the IGI and now upon his death the ability for the world to seek out their ancestors. If Gordon B. Hinckley has done anything, it was to increase the love in the heart of man for their family, friends, and neighbors in this life and remembrance and love for those who has gone before. Now he is among them and we are inspired to carry on his example.

My family was saddened to hear of the great loss, to the world in the passing, of our dear Prophet. We know that he is at rest after living a wonderful and full life. He has set a good example for us all. We weep for our own loss, but rejoice for those who awaited him on the other side. These last couple of days are treasured by us due to the increased ability to remember much of his life as it comes through the media. We will remember him for many reasons, but mostly for telling us all to do our best, to be better people, to stand for something. Doing one's best is something that only the person and his Lord can know. It is a goal we can all make and achieve. We love his 6 B's and his wonderful sense of humor. Our prayers are with his dear family at this incredible time of grief. May we all live by his teachings. The (late) George E. Doty family of Provo, Utah

President HInckley had the biggest influence on my life. He is my hero and he was set-apart as a prophet just weeks after I was born. I was at a fireside when he passed away at the fireside we were talking about prophets and when i heard that he died it mad me stronger and that the lord lives. He was truly a prophet for the people especially the youth. Till we meet again......
