Al Copeland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 25, 2008.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Al Copeland, who became rich selling spicy fried chicken and notorious for his flamboyant lifestyle, died Sunday at a clinic near Munich, Germany. He was 64.

The founder of the Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken chain had been diagnosed shortly before Thanksgiving with a malignant salivary gland tumor. His death was announced by his spokeswoman, Kit Wohl.

After growing up in New Orleans, Copeland sold his car at age 18 for enough money to open his own one-man doughnut shop. He went on to spend 10 modestly successful years in the doughnut business.

The opening of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in New Orleans in 1966, however, caught Copeland's eye. Inspired by KFC's success, Copeland in 1971 used his doughnut profits to open a restaurant, Chicken on the Run. ("So fast you get your chicken before you get your change.")

After six months, Chicken on the Run was still losing money. In a last-ditch effort, Copeland chose a spicier Louisiana Cajun-style recipe and reopened the restaurant under the name Popeyes Mighty Good Fried Chicken, after Popeye Doyle, Gene Hackman's character in the film "The French Connection." The chain that grew from the one restaurant became Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken.

In its third week of operation, Copeland's revived chicken restaurant broke the profit barrier.

Franchising began in 1976, growing the chain to more than 800 stores in the United States and several foreign countries by 1989.

In 1983, he founded Copeland's of New Orleans, a causal-dining, Cajun-style restaurant. In the next two decades the chain expanded as far as Maryland and west into Texas. He also started Copeland's Cheesecake Bistro, Fire and Ice restaurants, and Al's Diversified Food & Seasonings - a line of specialty foods and spices for large national restaurant chains.

In March 1989, Popeyes - then the third-largest chicken chain - purchased Church's Chicken, the second largest behind KFC. The two chains, operated separately, gave Copeland more than 2,000 locations.

The Church's purchase was heavily financed, however, and escalating debt forced Copeland's company to file for bankruptcy in 1991. Although Copeland lost both Church's and Popeyes in the bankruptcy, he retained the rights to some Popeyes products, which he manufactured through his Diversified Foods & Seasonings plants, along with a few Popeyes stores.

Copeland frequently made headlines away from his business empire.

His hobbies included racing 50-foot powerboats, touring New Orleans in Rolls Royces and Lamborghinis, and outfitting his Lake Pontchartrain home with lavish Christmas decorations, including half a million lights and a three-story-tall snowman. The display drew a lawsuit in 1983 from neighbors who said the resulting traffic held them hostage in their own homes.

Copeland and his third wife, Luan Hunter, were married at the New Orleans Museum of Art on Valentine's Day 1991. As they left the ceremony rose petals were tossed from a helicopter and fireworks exploded over the building.

The original presiding judge at their divorce, Ronald Bodenheimer, pleaded guilty to promising a custody deal favorable to Copeland in return for a possible seafood contract and other benefits. Two Copeland associates and Bodenheimer went to federal prison for participating in the conspiracy.

Copeland was never personally accused of participating in the scheme.

Copeland's survivors include five sons, four daughters, a brother and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were pending.

My name is Robert Payne, & I'd like to express my deep felt sorrow to the Copeland Family for your loss. I started working for Brother Al as I affectionately referred to Him when he opened up "Super Popeye's" on Veterans Hwy. in Metairie. I started with a temp service sweeping floors etc then Gary Robertson bought out my contract & hired me. Al hired a chef from California who came in & trained us. Joe was Kit. Mgr & Zann was Mgr. After I left employment there & my father passed away, I found out my Uncle lived next door to Al Jr. (his boys babysat Jr.'s kids) & asked for help locating me & Al or Jr. or both went to the home office on Clearview Pkwy. on the weekend (it was closed) & pulled my file & gave them a last known address to help them get me to the funeral on time. Such acts of kindness in every aspect from my first encounter to my last were well above & beyond the common decency that I could ever have expected or deserved. I told great stories of Brother Al to many people over the years in several states that I lived or worked in not to mention the experience in the industry I owe straight to both father & son. they are big winners & always surround themselves with winners. Thank you Brother Al for enriching my life & for allowing me to be a part of your extended family. I write this, as I now shed my tears for your loss. May God bestow his Mercy & Blessings upon all of your family.

You will never be out of our hearts. To the people of New Orleans, You were our King. We missed you this year on the floats, but we didnt know what you were going through. I am sorry for your family, so, so, sorry. I know just knowing you, and the pain I felt when they came on the news and said you had passed away, that your family is in deep pain. But God said, To live, we have to die. We want you here because we are selfish. But he wanted you more. Your in good hands now. You are so loved. God mplease make is easy for your family. Thanks for all you did for for the "unknown" people. Your lights, your floats, your smile, your love... I wish we could give you something back. All we can do is to let your family know.. you will always be loved. God BLESS YOU AL. And I pray your family will always know YOU WERE THE BEST. God bless your family.

New Orleans and the world has lost a wonderful man. My deepest heartfelt sympathies and condolences go out to his family and friends. His story is truly an inspiration to all. Al Copeland taught us that if you have a dream and work very, very hard despite adversity that anything can be accomplished and we all can live the American Dream. I had the pleasure of meeting Al Copeland outside his home on Christmas Eve 2004 and he was so down to earth and kind to me even though we had never met before we both hit if off and spoke for some time and wished each other a Merry Christmas. I will always remember and cherish having met him that night my whole life. It's also kind of ironic that his Popeye's Chicken Chain is one of my customers and became my customer around the time he got sick. I sure "love that Chicken from Popeye's." Please Rest in Peace my good friend. I'll miss and love you forever.

They called his boat "The Chicken Coop," when he was tied up behind Louisiana Lagniappe in Destin, Florida.
He was always coming to town with his toys!

We've been watching you and your great toys come to Destin for years. When my kids were little they always looked for the "boat with the fire in the back". As they got older they fell in love with the Harley's and big trucks. Your were an inspiration to every one who wants to make something of themselves. You will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your love one. I met Al 35 years ago. I was at the openiing of the first Popeyes on NOLA. I moved away 25 years ago, but was always able to find one of his restuarant where ever I went. I hope that the light are on in his honor as well as his memory for during the Christmas Holidays, for the children. Below is a poem I dedicate to Al. One more thing I want to say. I've known restuarant owners with one restuarant and they would crazy when the croud arrived, but Al Copeland was cool, calm, and collect, and had a great personality, always smiling. We loved him, but God love him best, this why He sent his Angel to bring him home. It's alright, he's in good hands. He made a lot of friends, help a lot of people, and now he has taken on the wings of a Heavenly Angel.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

The one memory that i will have is one christmas I came to see the lights with my godchild and Mr. Al came up to my car with his wife and his son and gave my godchild a stuff animal that she would not let go of. I think the family should keep with his traditon and keep the lights going year after year and keep riding in the parades too. To the family just remember all the good times you had with him, and to the older kids try and help with the younger ones they don't really know whats going on they will really need their older brothers and sister to help them though this. Also remember he is always in your heart and looking down at you RIP Al Copeland

My husbund and I had the pleasure of meeting Al where he launched his race boat. He even took out the time to take a few photo's with us. Very down to earth man, that's what we liked alot about him. He wasn't afraid to talk to every day people. Very nice man indeed. I worked for Popeye's back in 1972 in Arabi, but never met him then. We met him 1 yr ago, before he ever knew of any Cancer. Very sad thing here indeed. Our prayer's go out to the Copeland Family. Keep his boat going besides the chicken, I think he would like that also, as with his things in the Parade's too, along with his light display at Christmas time. Kim and Mike
