Irvine Robbins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 6, 2008.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Irvine Robbins, who as co-founder of Baskin-Robbins brought Rocky Road, Pralines 'n Cream and other exotic ice cream concoctions to every corner of America, has died at age 90.

Robbins had been ill for some time and died Monday at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., said his daughter Marsha Veit.

While the company advertised that it offered 31 flavors, in fact it has created more than 1,000 flavors, according to its Web site.

Generations of kids trooped to Baskin-Robbins stores to buy ice cream flavors like Jamoca, Daiquiri Ice, Pink Bubblegum, Nuts to You and Here Comes the Fudge.

"Frankly, I never met a flavor I didn't like," Robbins told The New York Times in 1973.

Some were short-lived and created to mark specific events, such as Lunar Cheesecake for the moon landings and Valley Forge Fudge for the 1976 bicentennial.

When the Beatles were to arrive in the United States in 1964, a reporter called to ask whether Baskin-Robbins was going to commemorate the event with a new flavor.

Robbins didn't have a flavor planned but quickly replied, "Uh, Beatle Nut, of course."

The flavor was created, manufactured and delivered in just five days, according to the Web site.

Robbins opened his first ice cream store in Glendale, Calif., in December 1945, following his discharge from the Army. He used $6,000 from a cashed-in insurance policy his father had given him for his bar mitzvah.

Robbins offered 21 flavors at the store.

"In light of what Baskin-Robbins was to become, that first store was incredibly amateurish," according to a biography by his daughter Veit. "It was called 'Snowbird' because Robbins couldn't think of anything else. The opening was delayed for a day because the paint on the floor hadn't dried."

His cousin Sybil Hartfield bought $39 of the first day's sales of $53, according to the biography.

His brother-in-law, the late Burton Baskin, opened his own ice cream store in neighboring Pasadena a year later. By the end of the 1940s, they had joined forces to create Baskin-Robbins. Robbins recalled they used a flip of the coin to decide which name came first.

They also decided to sell their stores to managers, pioneering the franchise concept for ice cream stores.

As corporate policy, employees were allowed to eat all the ice cream they wanted, because, Robbins said, "I don't want my employees stealing."

Robbins was dedicated to upholding the quality of his ice cream regardless of the cost, his daughter said.

"Everybody has a proprietary interest in ice cream," Robbins told the Times for the 1973 story. "All you have to do is mention ice cream and everybody has a flavor."

Baskin-Robbins was sold to United Fruit Co. in 1967, but Robbins continued to work for the company until retiring in the 1970s.

Today, Baskin-Robbins is part of Dunkin' Brands Inc. and has more than 5,800 franchises worldwide.

In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife, Irma; another daughter, Erin Robbins; a son, John Robbins; and sisters Shirley Familian and Elka Weiner. His son is a noted author ("Diet for a New America") and advocate of vegetarianism and natural foods.

Mr. Robbins was one of my customers for a few years. I never knew he was from Baskin-Robbins, until after he died. He was very nice to me. Always smiling, never complained. Always caring for his wife. Nice guy.

RIP Mr. Robbins

To The Robbins Family:
My family sends our condolences. No matter where we go we always stop at a Baskins-Robbins.This was my childrens special treat. We still use that same sentiment with the grandchildren. They can spot a store before we can. We have wonderful memories being able to sit and eat ice cream in the store was a joy in it self. I'm sure your dad had this vision in mind. May you all continue the legacy.Be Blessed.

I will always remember Mr. Robbins. As a young golf pro in Oregon, I played many rounds of golf with him . One day, I asked him what he had retired from and all he said was that he had been in the ice cream business. He failed to tell me he was THE ice cream business. We will miss his sharp wit and humor.

I have many fond memories as I was once an assistantant mangager at a local Baskin Robbins and always enjoyed seeing the smiles on the little children's faces when they came in to the store. We carried more than 31 flavors and I looked forward to the next shipment date to see what new flavors we were going to get.

May you find peace and comfort in the promise of John 5:28 and 29, "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life". We have hope to see our loved ones, who, like Mr. Robbins, took pleasure in making others happy.

My heartfelt sympathy to his family in this time of loss. Mr. Robbins was a kind, gentle, loving person, loved his family and friends and all associated with his family. I got to know him when I was a Nanny for his grandchildren in 1984. He has blessed so many lives through knowing him and his business ventures. He will be truly missed, but not forgotten. Greetings to Marsha and her family. Please accept my condolences.

I'm sorry for your loss.

A trip to Baskin-Robbins in the early 1970s (when I first met them) was always an adventure. The flavors were imaginative and edgy, and of course, delicious; in a world of plain chocolate and vanilla.

We are all richer for his contribution.

Mr. Robbins was my hero in so many ways. I was Blessed to know him as one of our EMC Diabetes Program Board. We had so many wonderful moments of laughter and quiet conversations. When I was ready to give up due to my substandard supervision it was he that said " Soon you will be able to create a more dynamic program. Just hang on" He was dedicated to the improvement of humanity. He always actively participated and in spite of the usual politics he kept his focus on the goal. I will miss him very much.

My condolences to the family of a man whose creations have always brought happy moments to my life, regardless of other circumstances, every one of the innumerable times I've enjoyed one of his three-flavored, triple scooped sugar cones, always with a jamoca almond fudge scoop.

All my best, DJ

Dear Robbins family,
I am so sorry for your loss! I have many fond memories of visits to Baskin-Robbins with my cousins - for Pink Bubblegum ice cream and then, later, graduating to more grown-up flavors like Pralines and Cream. Even though you've been separated from your loved one for a while, please take comfort in the thrilling hope held out at Job 14:14, 15. The faithful man Job asked and, under inspiration, answered his own question: "If an able-bodied man dies can he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I shall wait, until my relief comes. You will call, and I myself shall answer you. For the work of your hands you will have a yearning." Rest assured that God knows of your pain and yearns for the day you can be reunited with your dear loved one right here on earth under much better circumstances (please note Psalm 37:11, 29).
