Robert Mondavi Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 16, 2008.
BERKELEY, California (AP) - Robert Mondavi, the pioneering vintner who put California wine country on the global map, has died. He was 94.

Mondavi died peacefully at his home in Yountville, California on Friday, said Mia Malm, spokeswoman for the Robert Mondavi Winery.

An enthusiastic ambassador for the health benefits of moderate consumption of wine, and of California wine in particular, Mondavi had traveled the world into his 90s, promoting the cultural and social benefits of wine.

Born in Virginia, Minnesota, Mondavi got an economics degree from Stanford University in California in the 1930s and went to work at the Charles Krug Winery, which his Italian-born parents had bought after moving to California from Minnesota.

He married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie Declusin in 1937 and they had three children, Michael, Marcia and Tim.

For 20 years, the winery was a family business. But Robert and Peter, his younger brother by 14 months, clashed frequently. Robert Mondavi had ambitious plans for the winery; Peter Mondavi had a more conservative style. According to Robert Mondavi's autobiography "Harvests of Joy," matters came to a head in November 1965 when the brothers got into a fist fight.

"When it was all over, there were no apologies and no handshake," wrote Robert Mondavi.

A long and bitter legal fight ensued.

In 1966, at the age of 52 and using borrowed money, Mondavi started over, opening his own winery.

There, he championed the use of cold fermentation, stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels. He introduced blind tastings in Napa Valley. His winery was also among the first to go public.

Always convinced that California wines could compete with the European greats, Mondavi engaged in the first French-American wine venture when he formed a limited partnership with the legendary French vintner Baron Philippe de Rothschild to grow and make the ultra-premium Opus One at Oakville, California. The venture's first vintage was in 1979.

In the late 1970s, Mondavi's first marriage ended; in his autobiography "Harvests of Joy," he wrote that his single-minded pursuit of the wine business was partly to blame. In 1980, he married a second time, to Margrit Biever, a native of Switzerland who had worked at the Mondavi winery since the late '60s.

What a fortunate person I am to have had the opportunity to work for such a genuinely humble man who played such an instrumental role in teaching us how to appreciate one of God's greatest gifts - the juice from that delicious berry. From you, I learned to love wine and everything about it - from the soil to the cork, and how to make it a healthy part of my everyday life. My deepest thoughts are with Margrit, Michael, Tim, Marcia and the many grandchildren at this time. Thank you "Mister" for all that you shared! Your spirit will forever live on in las vinas!

And wine that makes the heart of mortal man rejoice,
To make the face shine with oil,
And bread that sustains the very heart of mortal man
Ps. 104:15

I thought this scripture really summed up the thought behind Mr. Mondavi’s life. He encouraged moderation and dignity. He was truly a gifted man with the ability to produce a field that carried out world renowned wines. May he one day soon have a vineyard that can be enjoyed forever by the globe. Isaiah 37: 30-31 and Isaiah 65:21

Thanks for the memories

A true American legend. I spent a summer in 1997 working at the Mondavi winery. He was the essence of Napa valley and the United States wine culture. What amazed me most was not his depth of soul he put in every bottle wine he produced, but his simple caring for every employee and customer that walked through his doors. He was a man who gave to all people.

Yesterday John Buechsenstein, a professor at U.C. Davis informed a group of over 50 wine tasting students from around the United States of Robert Mondavi's death. Everyone in the class toasted his life and contributions to the enjoyment and business of wine. Mr. Buechsenstein's most memorable comment was how much Mr. Mondavi shared freely with students and other winemakers his tremendous knowledge. He will be sorely missed.

REST IN PEACE ROBERT MONDAVI

Kay Marie Jacobson

May 16, 2008

I was very saddened to hear about the passing of Rovert Mondavi. My mother grew up across the street from the Mondavis on North 2nd Street in Virginia, Minnesota. While my mother was alive (she died 14years ago) she often proudly showed me a photo of "Bobby" Mondavi's 10th birthday party. After I moved to the Bay Area, I often thought that I would like to visit Robert and share that photo with him. Alas, that never happened. I will always have a warm place in my heart for the beautiful Italian boy from the Iron Range who grew up to be the "king" of Napa Valley winemakers. Salud!

Circa 1995, I worked as a hostess at popular, extremely busy restaurant in the Mission. Robert Mondavi and his wife called from Napa last minute and asked for a reservation for 2 that night. I explained that we were really booked, but I would do my best. I'll admit that I didn't know who he was at the time given I was in my early 20's and not a wine drinker. He and his wife pulled up in a chauffeured car (Rolls Royce, I think), dressed to the nines. They had to wait by the hostess station for a good 15 minutes while I tried to fit them in. They were patient and respectful the entire time. I was finally able to seat them along the banquette, which could be a tight squeeze with other diners. Mondavi and his wife were quite happy to eat dinner there and chatted with everyone around them. They were delightful customers, and it's a SF memory I'll always cherish.

How privileged we have been to know this man and the love of his life - his delightful bride and soul-mate! Robert and Margrit have experienced and known first hand the challenges of hearing impairment and have been uniquely touched by the plight of children. Together, their personal and charitable support of the Let Them Hear Foundation has been instrumental in changing the lives of children world-wide through their generous support and encouragement. The attitude of this amazing couple is forever young and timeless, encouraging and cheering those of us at LTHF who continue in the spirit of courage and vigor exemplified in the lives of Robert and Margrit Mondavi. We have been blessed to walk beside them. The overwhelming joy of this remarkable life is a rare and precious jewel.

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Robert when I was working with Bill Holt in his SF Design studio - we worked on the Mondavi account for several years. I was fortunate to have the honor of interviewing him for an audio series we were producing for the sales force. Robert politely told me he had but 30 minutes to be interviewed - 2 1/2 hours later we finished our talk. He was engaging, generous of spirit and the embodiment of a true visionary.
I will always remember his kind spirit -
and now...the memory of this great man - Robert Mondavi - will continue to be savored in every sip of the Mondavi wines . we will toast him tonight..and for many years to come. Blessings to his family...and to his spirit.

To the Robert Mondavi Family,

Many years ago, I met Robert Mondavi while I was on a wine tour at his winery. It was because of him that I became so interested in the enjoyment of wine. In the 80's, I conducted an enology sales class for those involved in the tasting rooms and his son, Michael, was in that class. Robert Mondavi is indeed an icon of the Napa Valley wine area. He will be greatly missed, but I will think of him whenever I enjoy one of his fine wines with the Robert Mondavi label. Rest in peace Robert - save a glass of fume blanc for me.

To The Mondavi Family.
How blessed I was to have had the opportunity to met and talk with "The Legend" many times. As a fellow Italian and one time restauranteur, I have the utmost respect for what he has accomplished and meant to the wine and hospitality industry. I will always remember his gracious smile, his big heart and his attention to detail. But most of all, I will remember what a true gentleman he was and how he treated his wife, family and friends. He will continue to be a man I will look up to and hope to emulate. May God welcome him with open arms and may our prayers be for the family as they suffer through the loss of their loved one. May he rest in Peace.

Those of us from Minnesota's Iron Range - Virgina, Minnesota today will remember the passing of a native son. I was fortunate enough to know Robert over a 25 year period and dine with him and Margrit along with other good friends of mine Governor Pete and Gayle Wilson at the Mondavi's spectacular home. When Robert visited our farm (dressed in a suit and tie) I marvelled at his ease and willingness to walk through my husband's giant pumpkin field and talk about the fact that he thought my husband was a renaissence man.
Gary Miller, my husband, is a 4th generation farm boy from Ohio and truly does create magic in every plant he grow yet Robert is a Global Renaissence Man in the fact that he has awakened an awareness in the world's wine palate. Blessings to you Robert my friend and comfort to your family in this the hour of you flight to the Angels who guide you on your final journey.

I had the extreme good fortune of having dinner with him and his wife in 2000, and for me, being in the wine business, was beyond my wildest dreams. Both he and his wife were so pleasant, and a joy to sit and chat with. I will treasure that memory forever and always talk proudly about him. He will be missed not only by our industry, but by any person lucky enough to be on his path of life. Rest in Peace sir, and know you left maybe the largest footprint ever in American wine.
