Tasha Tudor Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 20, 2008.
MARLBORO, Vt. (AP) - Children's book illustrator Tasha Tudor, whose whimsical drawings of country outings, gardens and family life in rural New England echoed her own picturesque lifestyle, has died. She was 92.

Tudor, who illustrated such classics as "Little Women" and "The Secret Garden," died Wednesday at her home, surrounded by her family and friends, according to a statement posted on her Web site. Her death was confirmed by Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro, which was handling the arrangements.

"She was ahead of her time, but she lived in the past," said Jill Adams-Mancivalano, a longtime friend.

Tudor, who quit school after eighth grade, wrote or collaborated on nearly 100 children's books after making her debut with "Pumpkin Moonshine" in 1938. Besides "The Secret Garden," she illustrated "The Night Before Christmas" and wrote books of her own, including "Corgiville Fair."

Her home in this southern Vermont town was a replica of a 19th-century New England homestead, replete with antique utensils, tiny windows and doorways of varying sizes. In later life, she burnished her reputation among fans with her gardening, weaving and sewing exploits.

She made her own clothing — fashioned after 19th-century apparel — and raised Nubian goats for their milk.

Adams-Mancivalano, whose family farm in nearby Wilmington hosted open-to-the-public birthday parties and other events in which Tudor held forth with fans, called her a witty, engaging homebody who loved to insert friends, family members and little details of her own life into her work.

"Just to watch her draw — the detail and the whimsy that she had in her later life was just incredible. I asked her about that one time, how her work has evolved, and her comment to me was, 'Well, my eyesight is starting to fail, and I don't have the perfection I used to,' so she'd add more stuff."

Her family said an online memorial on her Web site was open for fans to share their feelings and memories of her. The address is www.tashatudorandfamily.com.

I used to work on her farm, caring for her horsed, for a while and stayed at her home in Warner, N.H. for the summer. I will always remember the time, at her beautiful farm. I enjoyed the experience, of caring for her animals. I was also, glad I'd had the chance to meet her and know her. She was a special Lady, and one of a kind.

I have been blessed by the beauty Tasha shared in her lovely artwork. Take Joy was my first book of hers and is my favorite.
I believe that was the message she wanted us all to get. This world can rob us of that childlike joy! And she sought to share that. And true joy is found only in the Lord.

I remember when I was a child my mother gave me 5 stories from a collection of Tasha, they were the most beautiful books I've ever had in my life. The good thing is that I have lived for so many years, creating beautiful things.

I know it's a few years since Tasha passed. But I so loved reading about her life in the original Victoria magazine in the 1980's.
The pictures and her writings with her artwork were so magical and enjoyable. If only Victoria magazine had stayed as they were. I d still have a subscription, and someday I will order a Tasha Tudor big art book and stories just for my birthday.
Tasha, you were a Lady of Ladies before your time.Your approach to life was so very simple, beautiful and made everyday life much more enjoyable. If only life were like that now what a happier world it would be!

I first found Tasha Tudor from a book of the month club. It looked interesting, so I ordered it. Little did I know how much it would change my life. I fell in love with Tasha, her gardens, her corgen, her "Choose Joy" attitude. I planned a surprise getaway to Williamsburg for 2 close friends, packing homemade lunchboxes for the trip. What a thrill to see Tasha''s Doll House , stuffed Corgis, Firesidestove, Teacups, artwork all in person. It was Fabulous. Darling Lady, may you garden in a heavenly flower patch, no weeds in heaven, with goslings, baby Corgis and kittens to keep you company.

Tasha, I was thinking of you today as I read one of your books and looked at your flowers and Corgi's. You had a wonderful and loving life. I wish I had met you. Maybe when my time comes I will get to meet you. I look at all your plants and have to get more bulbs and hollyhocks to add to my garden. Some day it will be filled with a lot of the plants you grew. Love you sweet lady.

Im a little late in my visit but my admiration and affection for Tasha has never waivered. I have the video that made of her at her home, with her friends. It is a treasure to me. In my dreams, I was Tasha Tudor, or a woman of the independent mind and lifestyle that she so embodied. I'm grateful for Tasha and am saddened at her passing. But I will always remember her.

I had a book of fairy tales when I was very young. This book had the most beautiful pictures in it that I had ever seen.
Years later, when I was pregnant with my first child (now 30), I found the same book of fairy tales illustrated by Tasha Tudor! I bought it and it renewed my love for her artwork. I began searching for other books, either written by or illustrated by Tasha Tudor.
Years later, we got a computer and I started searching for her work. I was so moved and enamored of her life and talents, I wrote her a letter. To my amazement, MS Tudor wrote me back. One of my most prized possesions is the card she designed and her hand-written note back to me!
Life events being what they are, I had no more computer, etc and lost track of the web site. I just did this search today and discovered her passing.
I am so saddened by her loss. My sympathies to her family and loved ones. I am sure that time has healed some of the sorrow you must have and still be feeling for her passing.

Thank you for keeping her work and her memory alive especially for those of us who have loved her vicariouslly through her lifes work.
She has brought joy and happiness to me throughout my lifetime and I am 55 now.

Watching the video 'Take Joy' over the years, I was lighted by the lifestyle chosen by Tasha Tudor, and became determined to 'take joy' whenever the choice arose. She was a gift.
A human along with the rest of us, she was eccentric in some touching ways. I'll be reminded of her throughout my life. Bless you all.

Just watched TAKE PEACE, a gift given over ten years ago by my late mother, to my husband's grandmother on her 90th birthday. My 21-year-old daughter recalled it, and found it at Gramma's house last night. Joyfully we watched it this morning, relishing in the simplicity, faith and giftedness of Tasha. What a beautiful way to end our Christmas celebration we continue to work at in simplicity and truth. Thank you for sharing this inspiring glimpse of what I believe can still exist in the world. May you continue to carry on the atmosphere of such a world...

I JUST TODAY FOUND OUT THAT TASHA HAD PASSED AWAY. TODAY IS OCT.29,2011. IHAVE SO MUCH ENJOYED TASHAS WORK AND HAVE FOR MANY YEARS BEEN IN AWE
OF HER TALENT. I HAVE SEVERAL PIECES OF HER ART AND A COUPLE OF SIGNED BOOKS. WHEN I TURNED FORTY, ABOUT 12 YEARS AGO I SENT AN E-MAIL TO HER WEBSITE REQUESTING TO SEE HER AND VISIT WITH HER AT HER HOME FOR MY BIRTHDAY. I RECEIVED THE ANSWER THAT DUE TO HER MANY OBLIGATIONS THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO FULFILL MY REQUEST. I'M SURE SHE WAS AN AMAZING WOMAN AND DEEPLY REGRET THAT I WAS NOT ABLE TO MEET HER IN PERSON. SHE WAS AT THE CINCINNATI FLOWER SHOW MANY YEARS AGO AND I WASN'T EVEN AWARE OF IT UNTIL THE FOLLOWING YEAR. SO SAD THAT I MISSED HER LECTURE. I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND TO YOU MY DEEPEST REGRETS AND MAY GOD BE WITH YOU ALL. I TREASURE ALL OF HER ART THAT I HAVE AND WILL MAKE SURE THAT IT IS PASSED ON TO SOMEONE WHO WILL LOVE IT AS MUCH AS I HAVE.

I have enjoyed Tasha Tudor's books
and art for many years and have
introduced them to my grandchildren
and friend's children so that they may enjoy them as well. It was an innocence
of time that has sadly escaped us that
she expressed so well. Thank you for
sharing your mother with all of us.
I am deeply saddened. My heartfelt
sympathy is with all of you.

May God richly bless you and keep you
safe always.

I have so enjoyed Tasha Tudor's art and beautiful books over the years and have many of them. My 49 year old daughter Victoria received a book as a gift when she was born and I read to her from it starting at nine months. She loved it even at that young age and now treasures it's worn pages. I look at her books over and over the beautiful home and garden she created are just what I would have loved to walk through. I have been thinking I need to know if she is well but just a novice at this computer business but improoving and now have learned to go on internet. I just want Seth to know how much I appreciated his mom. I grew up in Minnesota on a farm but have lived in Miami 53 years after marriage. Thank you so much for all the information on the internet. November 17, 2008 Hello!

I am a Swedish girl who has been admiring my wonderful friend Tasha Tudor for many many years. I have so many books about her and my favorite is Tasha's Garden.

We sent Christmas cards to each others and I loved it so much. Tashas card was always decorated with a little beautiful white dove and now I own just one of these lovely doves.

I would like to send all my sympathies to her nice family and I can never even say how sad I feel when she will not be here anymore, but in´a way I still am sure she will.

I have never read about such an interesting and nice person before and would have loved if she lived forever with all of us.

Sincerely

My sister-in-law introduced me to the works of this fine lady. I am still and always will be astounded at the talent this wonderful lady had. We tried to find her home in Marlboro, but never did. It would have been a wonderful gift to visit this wonderful, charming, talented, loving lady. The Lord has a very special place for her. Thank you Tasha Tudor!

My daughter and I would sit and read Pumpkin Moonshine over and over again when she was very young and fall asleep with peaceful and happy thoughts. I was privilaged enough to meet Tasha years ago and have her sign her name to a set of books for my daughter, in hopes that she will have these to read to her little girl someday. Thank you for your sweet and gentle ways, you were a wonderful example of true kindness in the world.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of Tasha Tudor. I never met her personally but felt a real kinship to her. She reminded us of the simpler things in life and that family is so important. She did make fantasy seem so real. I just recently started a collection of her children's books for a new grandchild. We will miss you.

It is difficult to say "goodbye" to our friend, Tasha Tudor. What a wonderful legacy she has left to us, myself and my daughter, who says Tasha helped form her life. I am sitting here with a very large stack of Tasha's work including those that described her life and style. I doubt she will ever be replaced in this life of rush and lack of tranquility.

It was with a deep sense of loss that I read of Tasha Tudor's death. She touched my life in a very profound way. It will always be a mystery to me how she could live in this world and not be transformed by it. I have read her books over and over to my children and five grandsons. We have spent hours looking at her illustrations, every detail of them. They are a part of our childrens history and will never be forgotten. I have many of her books, some autographed. I have met Tasha Tudor several times in Colonial Williamsburg and was spellbound watching her draw. She was barefoot and in a long dress. I listened to her stories about art and family, birthday parties, plays in the barn and Sparrow Post. This 72 year old grandmother says thank you for sharing Tasha Tudor with the world.

My deepest sympathies to the family of Tasha Tudor. I was introduced to Tasha's works through a children's literature class in 1961. An avid fan from that day forward, I collected as many of her books as I could. My children and grandchildren were read to with careful supervision to not dirty my sacred Tasha Tudor books. In the 1980's I borrowed $5,000 to buy an original painting. It is treasured. When I retired from a 37-yr. teaching career, my colleagues presented me with a hand-written letter from Tasha Tudor congratulating me on my retirement, along with an autograhped book by Tasha and Bethany--The Christmas Cat. If ever I needed to quiet my mind and be in a world I felt loved and safe in, it would be inside a book by Tasha Tudor. I cherish her loveliness and everything she stood for. Many blessings and love to all who knew her . . .

As a mother who enjoyed reading Tasha's books to my children, I was privileged to have been her nurse at a Boston hospital in 1995when she was there for an extensive checkup. She was truly a LADY. She autographed several of her books in my possession with her lovely line drawings, and we briefly corresponded after that. She graciously invited us to her farm, but, sadly, we never made it. I will hold her as an example of how to be vibrant in life to the end.
She will be missed, but her spirit will live on for all who read and enjoy her illustrations. TAKE JOY in all she has given us.
May God bless all her family with beautiful memories.

My first reading from a Tasha Tudor book was in 1967. It was titled My First Graces. When I was in college in the early 1980's, I wrote a report for a Children's Lit class about Tasha Tudor. I have loved the books she has written and illustrated all of my life. I have collected as many as possible and have even had the pleasure of meeting her in person at a book signing. I took my daughter with me(to the book signing) and will treasure that photo forever. I too (as I saw someone else's entry) had named my cat Tasha!! Thank you for keeping rural New England alive! Tasha Tudor was my ultimate idol as my own garden reflects. It is because of her through her books of gardening that I determined to have as many of the most beautiful blooms as I could possibly fit. She knew so well what her passions were and simply did not have a need to talk about them...her home, gardens, corgi's, nubian goats and many other cherished pets spoke for her. I am saddened by her passing but take comfort that heaven will soon be even more glorious.

The passing of Tasha Tudor touches our hearts as she touched our's through her beautiful books.
Autumn of 1984, right after my Mother died, our family took a New England vacation.
Meeting Tasha was big on my list of things to do...
I remember stopping at a Dunkin' Donuts in Brattleboro to call her daughter, Bethany. I asked if her mother was still living and she said, "Of course, she is still living."
I explained my Mother had just died and I meant no offense; I explained how much I loved Tasha's books and asked if we might go to visit Tasha. Bethany made a call to Tasha, who OKD the visit.
Off the 4 Qs went...over the river and thru the woods to visit Tasha Tudor.
I warned the 3 guys to shake her hand carefully because she was "very old." Now that I think about it, she must have been about my current age of mid 60s. perspective?!??!
Tasha had the handshake of a Lumber Jack....and her Corgis were minature Tashas. Tasha was quite the little Dynamo! Before we knew it we had our money out buying an original Tasha Tudor painting that she quickly hauled down from upstairs.
This treasured painting has adorned our living room secretary for over 20 years.
Tasha's little house was rather primitive. Dishes stacked to the ceiling in her sink; her painting room was in perfect order....She showed us where she sat to paint with just the right light shining thru the window. She even let us sit in her church bench by the fireplace.
Tasha's garden was being readied for winter....This was October of 1984
*It was surreal to have had a personal time with Tasha Tudor!***
When we returned to our car...our 2 sons proclaimed loudly..."She almost killed my hand." So much for a Mother's wisdom.

Tasha Tudor's touch will reach through the centuries!
Thank you, Tasha, for making the most of your talents and sharing them so lovingly with the world.

Dear Seth, Tom, Efner , Bethany et al,
I am so sorry to hear of Tasha's death. I have been a fan and collector of her books and original works since her very first. I have visited Tasha for a week end at the "farm", slept in her feather beds, visited the Corgis and seen so many wonderful things. I have seen her many other times in Lewisburg and other places. She even visited my home in Lewistown to look for a doll for Gretchen (Brown). My memories of her will be with me always in her books, art work and my mind. Love to you all - she was one of a kind!

I grew up with her books, my favorite being A Time to Keep. It is pure magic. What a wonderful legacy, to have made so many children happy.

I discovered Tasha Tudor as an adult and so enjoyed her books and illustrations. She was an inspiration to me and I'll always remember her being interviewed at her home by HGTV.Absolutely charming.

Years ago I bought a book called "A Time To Keep", I believe it was based on Ms. Tudors memories of holidays and the changing of the seasons, of her youth. My daughter and I loved to sit and pour over the pages. She was a true talent and a genuine source of simple joy. She will be missed. May her family be surrounded and comforted by God's perfect love.
