I was coming back from Ventura County in August of 2008 in my RV and I seen hundreds of fire trucks and it was a memorial for the guys that were lost that day but I did not know that. It was 115 degrees that day and after I left Redding My RV somehow caught on fire around MT Shasta, I used up my fire extinguisher but could not get the fire out then some firefighters in a van coming back from the memorial stopped for a second and left a fire extinguisher. Without that I would not have been able to get the fire out so thank you to guys and to the truck driver that also left me a fire extinguisher. I'm sure you guys remember.
I found out later what the memorial was for and also that the pilot Bill was a friend that I went to school with. A few months before that Bill was telling me and my fiance about some of his life flight runs and the experiences he had as a helicopter pilot. My condolences to all the guys lost and the families that had to deal with this tragedy and to Bill and the survivors and their families that also had to deal with this.

i was so sad to hear about this accident that took the lives of so many brave men.my son also died in a helicopter crash along with 3 other marines 01/22/2004 at camp pendelton. some one sent me a poem that i would like to share with each and everyone..... the title is (to those i love and those who love me)... when i am gone, release and let me go. i have so many thngs to see and do. you mustn't tie yourself to me with tears. be thankful for our beautiful years. i gave to you my love, you can only guess, how much you gave to me in happiness. i thank you for the love you each have shown but now it's time i traveled alone...so grieve awhile for me , if grieve, you must. then let your grief be comforted by trust. it's only for a time that we must part. so bless the memories within your heart. i won't be far away for life goes on. so, if you need me, call and i will come. though you can't see or touch me, i'll be near. and if you listen with your heart, you'll hear all my love around you soft and clear. and when you must come this way alone, i'll greet you with a smile and say...welcome home

As a helicopter fire fighting pilot in No. California for 25 years I had come to know Jim. Our last visit was in January of this year. Jim was an old school pilot that was always ready to help every pilot that he came to work with. We have all lost a great guy and a pilot that was second to none. God Bless Jim and the other brave men that have now traveled to Gods Forest Service.

May the families of the brave firefighters find peace and strength from all of us who are sending our love and prayers your way. To all that continue to fight fires we continue to appreciate all that you do for us. My family has been wildland firefighters for many many years, sometimes the worry is unbearable, but I also am very proud of my sister and brother-in-law, who by the way was part of the crew that was lost. Thank god he is safe.
My love to you and god bless.

My heart aches for those who lost loved ones in this tragic accident. I currently have two of my five sons on fires in the immediate area and worry always for their safety. I am proud to know that so many brave young men and women risk life and limb to do such an admirable job defending lives and properties against raging inferno's. May God comfort and keep those in the Hollow of His Hand, that is my humble prayer.

At times like this when we don’t know what to do
Just talk to God and he will see you through
When words sometimes just won’t do and you don’t know what to say
Just talk to God and let him have his way
When friends and family come and go
Just remember that God has an open door
At times like this when words alone won’t do
May God Bless and Comfort you

To the Ramage family our deepest sympathies go out to you, and all of the families involved in this terrible accident.
For those of you who never met Jim Rammage there are some things you should know. JIm was the best. Jim loved life his wife and daughter, and he loved his ice cream! Jim was a hero of many sorts. Jim flew three tours in Vietnam, as a helicopter pilot and went on to serve our nation working in the air America program. Jim was also pinned with badge number one From the California Department of
Forestry rotary wing division now "Cal Fire" Jim's untimely tradgedy may make him the first victim from this program. After retitring from the state of California Jim went on to work for the Forest service as a check pilot and investigator.
Jim was more than that though, he was also a neighbor and a friend of mine, he was like a grandfather to my two girls. He was always there to help and give advice or maybe a friendly jab. Regardless, Jim was someone who many looked up to; young or old pilot or not, Jim will be missed by many. Our thoughts go out tonight to the Rammage family. Jim we will never forget you! God Speed Jim, your friend and Brother firefighter Chris.

We hold the lives of each and every person affected by this tragedy up to God. Our children have watched the many fire crews, support teams, equipment and such with awe and wonder these past weeks. It has been a joy to tell them about the fire crews, their bravery and to have such a wonderful example of what courage truly means. Thank you. We will never forget what you gave.

When I am called to duty, God
Wherever flames may rage
Give me strength to save a life
Whatever be its age.
Let me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert
And hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling
To give the best in me,
To guard my friend and neighbor
And protect their property.
And, if, according to your will,
I have to lose my life,
Please bless, with your protecting hand,
My family and my wife.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, and co-workers of our fallen firefighters. Firefighters go to work each day with the goal of returning home at the end of their shift while giving their best on the job. Firefighters protect and serve, having to steel themselves against the situations they are thrust into.
When a firefighter you don't know falls it is as if a distant relative has died. But, you have shared the passion of the fire service and feel the loss.
Then a firefighter you know answers their last call. The degrees of separation you use to toughen yourself in bad situations instantly vanish and a higher level shock and distress sets in.
Learning that Jim Ramage is the last named victim of this terrible event erased my ability to distance myself. Jim was one of the greatest men I've met in my career. Not only an excellent helicopter pilot and firefighter, he was CDF's aviation safety officer for a number of years. He didn't inspect your operation, he always wanted to know how you were doing and how can we do this job better. To paraphrase Robert Burns, Jim "Ramjet" Ramage was a man for all that.

I just found out that my old friend, Jim Ramage, was riding on the S-61 that crashed. Jim was working for the USFS as an Inspector Pilot after spending almost 25 years as a Helicopter Pilot for CDF. Jim was a non-flying passenger on the aircraft at the time of the crash. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this time. He was a great pilot, a great friend and a great man. We have all lost loved ones, but I dont think we can even grasp the enormous pain the families of these brave firefighters are going through. God bless all of you and I pray that you are able to continue on with your lives without your loved ones. Although they will be missed terribly, they passed onto the next world with such great integrity and bravery that only someone who is willing to risk their own life for others can do. Dear Family and Friends of the heros who gave it all including their lives. Did they ever hesitate to answer the call when they were needed to fight the wildfires, to save lives and homes for people they did not know. NO, they got ready and went. I have been praying for all firefighters who were on the lines every day to bring these fires under control. I thank these young men for their sacrifice. May the countenance of our Loving God be upon all the loved ones during this loss. May His arms hold you and comfort your hearts and minds and May you feel the warmth of His presence.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived
okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here
is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you
every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up
and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were
gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for
me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's
chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life
on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not
be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But
one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a
time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will
give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day
was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the
way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick
him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in
your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember
you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
