Yossie Raichik Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2008.
JERUSALEM (AP) – The Jewish Habad organization says a rabbi who helped thousands of children affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster has died.

The group said Rabbi Yossie Raichik died Sunday of a lung infection. He was 55.

He was the director of Habad's "Children of Chernobyl" project, which airlifted 81 groups of children to Israel for treatment after the 1986 explosion of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor sent a toxic radioactive cloud through a large area.

Raichik was born in Los Angeles, where his parents were sent as emissaries by the leader of Habad, a Jewish outreach organizations.

Raichik was buried Sunday in Jerusalem. He is survived by his wife, several children and brothers and sisters, the group said in a statement.

Dear Raichik Mishpacha,

I only very recently learned of the passing of our dear Yossie. We lived on Laurel, one block from the Rabbi's home. As a young boy, I got to know many of the family members, including Abi, Yossie, Schimi and Loucie and their honorable and wonderful parents, Rabbi and Rebetzen Raichik. My father and I were fortunate to share in the many simchas of the family, and, when I would see Yossie, it would bring a smile to my face, for he was such a wonderful, learned and kind person. I will truly miss Yossie, as I have missed his dear parents. The Raichik family has always been a true inspiration to me, and, I am blessed to have had the opportunity of knowing them. Please accept my deepest condolences and may his memory be a blessing to all.

I did not know Rabbi Raichik personally but the world was a much better place because of how he lived. Because of his love for children and saving thousands of them, I can only hope he is encircled by children who have also passed.
