Nappy Brown Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2008.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Nappy Brown, a gospel-influenced blues singer of such hits such as "It Don't Hurt No More" and "I Cried Like A Baby," has died. He was 78.

Brown's label, Blind Pig Records, said the ailing musician died Saturday in Charlotte after a lengthy hospitalization.

Brown built his reputation in the mid-1950s. Among his hits, he rolled his L's in the lyrics to "Don't Be Angry." He also climbed the R&B charts with "It Don't Hurt No More" and "I Cried Like A Baby."

Born Napoleon Brown Culp in 1929 in Charlotte, the musician grew up singing in a church choir with his father. He also sang in a gospel group with his cousins en route to fame. Last year, Brown returned to his musical roots with an album titled "Long Time Coming."

For Nappy...a gospel-influenced blues singer of such hits such as "It Don't Hurt No More" and "I Cried Like A Baby,".

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Music, when soft voices die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

So many memories, from the early 80's, with Nappy, his family and friends, the long conversations, the stories from the past, the laughter, the tours we went on with Nappy, the recordings we made in his living room, will cherish them forever, the Gospel church, the road we took together to help Nappy get back into the music business again, his voice will be enjoyed by generations to come.
We will miss you Nappy.
Our condolences to the family.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

For those who never had the pleasure of seeing him perform, Mr. Brown was the essence of his genre. We saw him at the 2007 Blues and BBQ Festival, performing with an all-star band, including "Steady Rolling" Bob Margolin.
I was great to see him have another brief time in the spotlight.
Rest in peace, Mr. Nappy.......
