What a nice person he was to talk to. Hard to believe all of the great classics he played on. RIP Uriel. June your husband was fantastic musician. Was a pleasure to meet both of you.

I had the privilege of meeting Mr.Uriel in Nov.of '07 when The Funk Brothers were inducted into the Musicians' Hall Of Fame and Museum in Nashvillle,Tn. He was as lovable and humorous as he was in the movie. I was a guest of Mr.Eddie Willis' All of the Funk Brothers and their familes treated me like family. I will never forget how Mr.Uriel,Mr.Babbitt,and Mr.Willis accommodated me. I remember how Mr.Uriel's licks on "Shotgun' sounded so much like the recording that night. I'm honored to say that I had the privilege of meeting one of the "funkiest" drummers the music business has ever known!! May Allah(God)be pleased with Bro.Uriel's time with us.

I am saddened by the passing of Uriel Jones. I took up playing drums at the age of 8, and at that time, Cozy Cole was my inspiration. By the mid 60's, it was Motowns drummers that inspired me. And to this day, I still use the pickups that they used.
Rock and Roll Heaven added another member. RIP, Uriel.

My son is a drummer, and a lot of his styles come from listening to the Motown sound, including Mr. Jones's style. I just watched a show featuring Mr. Jones and other Motown musicans earlier this year. He was one of the greatest and will be sadly missed. My condolences to family and friends.

I am "Ole School" (65yrs) and came up on the driving rhythms of the "Funk Brothers". Being a drummer myself, one have a tendency to pay particular attention to that instrument. I know that an untold number of drummers from "back-in-the-day" did their best to imitate the riffs, rolls, rimshots and "Pop-Eye" effects that Mr. Jones supplied to the music of "The Funk Brothers".We know that he is missed !
Not to worry. The Bible gives hope of a resurrection to faithful and obedient mankind, so there's a wonderful possibility that we will see Uriel again ! At the Bible book of John:5-28 it reads: Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29: and come out . . .
My Deepest Sympathy . . .

One of the greatest joys of my life was seeing the joy in the faces of The Funk Brothers in "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown." The joy they brought to others was being returned to them. I am a young one that has suffered from the lost of a loved one. May the comforting thought from the Bible book of Revelation, the 21st chapter, verse 4 be of comfort to the entire Jones family. It reads: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” May Our Heavenly Father give you the strength you need to cope with your loss and to make it through these difficult days. When I am dead, my dearest
When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.
I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget.

To the family of Mr Uriel Jones,
I did not know him personally, but I knew his drum beats and of his music with the funk brothers and the music they helped to create for the world. Their movie, "Standing in the Shadows" is a favorite of mine and one that I never tire of watching over and over. I especially like the part where Uriel tells the story of Benny Benjamin and the elephants tying up taffic and he did not even drive. I am personally sadeden by his demise. But he has some fellow "funk brother" in the great beyond. To his family and those "funk brothers" left, may the love you felt for him and the love the creator has you sustain you in this your season of grief. Surely you will miss him, but his drum beats are another testimony of his existance on earth. May Peace be unto you!
March 27, 2009
You all were the greatest.Listen when any of Motown songs sung by the original artists with another band and then put on the real Funk Brothers band burned on all the new high tech stuff. Heaven for your ears. God bless his family and thank you for so many wonderful times. "Standing inthe Shadows was bittersweet for me,some of it was self-explanatory from the Dreamgirls script and from having musician friends and family,you knew how unsung and vastly underpaid,but such is life.

It is always difficult to lose a loved one. I think we can all find comfort in what the Bible says at John 5:28,29 "The hour is coming in which all those in the memomrial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life". God gives us the promise of seeing our loved ones again through means of the resurrection. The resurrection, based on the ransom sacrifice of Christ Jesus will bring a feeling of joy to get you through your time of grief.

To The Family of The Late Uriel Jones
Lean On God
By: Charles G. Turner, Sr.
In life our love ones and friends sometimes suddenly pass away
For many reasons we don’t understand
Our hearts become heavy with sorrow
Just remember to pray to God and put it in his hands
As time goes on there are days when we feel sad
When that happens think of the good times you’ve had
Lift up your head and carry on
And ask God to make you strong
Lean on God through your stress and strain
And he will surely ease the hurt and pain

May they also find peace knowing that his music will be remembered as the very best that Motown has given to us. The wonderful music that he was a part of will live forever. Uriel Jones continues to live in our hearts, minds, ears, and in Heaven.
He has certainly lived a blessed life.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

After listening to the Motown Sound for many years, the concept of the "Musicians" did not dawn on me. Knowing that, my brother gave me the documentary "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" as a birthday gift. That is by far the greatest documentaries of the Motown era. I came to love and appreciate the Funk Brothers. Mr. Jones, The Drummer Extraordinaire, will be missed. The Jones Family, and the Motown Family have my deepest sympathy.
