Pittsburgh Police Officers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 4, 2009.
Police officers Eric Kelly, Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo II were killed in a shooting in Pittsburgh after responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Eric Kelly

Kelly, 41, had just finished working the overnight shift and was on his way home when he responded to the shooting.

Kelly, a former Marine, entered the police academy in 1995. In the late 1990s, he patrolled the some of the city's most violent East End neighborhoods with Detective Robert Pires.

"He always had your back," Pires said. "If you were doing a call with Kelly you didn't have to worry. He knew what to do, what to say. With Kelly it came natural."

He is survived by his wife, Marena; daughters Tameka, 22, Autumn, 16, and Janelle, 11; his mother, Francis Kelly; and a sister.

Stephen Mayhle

Like Sciullo, Mayhle joined the Pittsburgh police two years ago. Sgt. Eric Holmes, their supervisor at the Zone 5 station where they worked said both officers were "young, energetic."

"They were always early, ready to start their shift," said Holmes. "They just loved being cops."

Mayhle celebrated his 29th birthday on Friday. Mayhle and his wife recently bought a home in the city after living with their daughters in a high-rise apartment building.

Shandra Mayhle recently wrote on her blog, "My husband is employed by the Pittsburgh City Police. He loves what he does!"

Police said Mayhle was the second officer to enter the home and was shot in the head.

Mayhle is survived by his wife, Shandra; daughters, Jennifer, 6, and Brooklynn, 3; his parents, Marjorie and Ronald Mayhle; and two brothers.

Paul Sciullo II

Sciullo, 37, worked with computers before deciding to join the police bureau about two years ago. He grew up in Pittsburgh's Bloomfield neighborhood, home of the city's Little Italy section, and played hockey and golf at Central Catholic High School.

High school hockey teammate Kevin Zielmanski, who now coaches at Bishop Canevin High School, said Sciullo told him "he really enjoyed being an officer. He didn't want a desk job. He enjoyed being out in the patrol car."

Sciullo was the first officer who entered the home and was shot in the head.

Sciullo is survived by his parents, Paul and Julia Sciullo; two sisters; and his fiancee, Lisa Esposito.

The former things have passed away."

Dear Kelly, Sciullo & Mayhle families & all Pittsburgh Police officers:
I have signed this book once already, but feel compelled to do so again. I live in Norfolk VA but am from Zelienople PA originally, so I feel like a "Pittsburgher." When I was a kid, I was in Children's Hospital of Pgh several times for major surgery. Coming from a small town, we often didn't know how to get around the "big" city but could always count on help from the Pittsburgh Police. My Mother often stayed in the nurses's dorm at Pitt during my hospital visits & the police always seemed to look out for her, walking her to her car, making sure she got to & from the hospital safely. I'd like to thank the police for their kindness, concern & professionalism. In reading all accounts of these 3 officers, it's clear that these were truly decent, brave & heroic men. Thank you & may God bless you officers Sciullo, Kelly & Mayhle & all law enforcement personnel.

My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Officers Paul Sciullo, III, Stephen J. Mayhle and Eric G. Kelly. These courageous men were truly heroes. They put their lives on the line for the community every day they wore the badge; however, on April 4th they gave the ultimate sacrifice. We will never forget that addition to being Officers, they were sons, brothers, husbands and fathers. My heart goes out to you all and I pray that God comforts you in this time of loss. God Bless You.

Kelly, Mayhle, and Sciullo Families,

Like the rest of the city, I am so saddened to hear of the tregedy that struck these three wonderful officers. My heart goes out to you all during this difficult time that your going through. I am related to two police officers my self. Please accept my deepest sympathies. The Bible promises at Psalm 37:10 that just a little while longer and the wicked one will be no more. We all look forward to a time when we can live together in peace. May you find comfort in the words of Revelation 21:3,4 where it says God will be with them. And will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things will have passed away.

For years I've driven Washington Boulevard and hardly noticed the Zone 5 Police Station. But after the events of this week, I'll never be able to drive past the station without thinking of the bravery and sacrifice of Officers Kelly, Mayhle, and Sciullo II. Thank you, Officers.

And to the men and women who are still with us, who continue to work to keep our streets, our homes, our families, and our world, safe. You have my utmost respect and deepest appreciation. Thank you, Officers.

As just an ordinary citizen, moved by the sacrifice of these three good men, I attended the City-County building memorial at about 6:30 on Wednesday evening. It was not crowded and I was able to express my condolences to the many officers standing in tribute to their comrades. As I was leaving, I saw a familiar face entering the building. Elsie Hillman also came to pay her respects as a member of the community who values our police and their dedicated work.
What a tribute - to know that the ordinary and the well known joined together in one thought - these men deserved our respect and appreciation in the only way we could show it. The families and the entire police force is in my personal prayers and in the prayers of my church family.

Stephen, Paul, and Eric

Three men swore to,
protect the community,
They were very aware of,
their responsibilities,
As morning dawned and
they were dispatched to
a call, only God knew,
that they would give their all.
They would never again
see their parents, siblings,
children and wives
They must not be forgotten
We will keep them and
their loved ones in our prayers
On up to heaven they
have climbed the stairs.

May God bless the fallen heroes and their families. May he find a way to take away the grievances and sadness. My daughter is a Pittsburgh Police Officer, and so it is a very sad time. I will pray for all the men and women who help to protect our country.
