Marine Sgt. and former journalist Bill Cahir has been killed in Afghanistan. He was 40 years old.

Cahir died while supporting combat operations in Helmand province. He was assigned to the 4th Civil Affairs Group, Marine Forces Reserve, Washington.

Cahir, formerly a reporter for Newhouse News Service Washington, joined the Marines after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Bill Cahir US Marine Sergeant. When tragedy strikes and takes the life of our loved ones we cry out loud due to the pain in our hearts. Our tears are not unnotice by our Heavenly Father. I went to college with Bill at PSU. I was a Theatre major and he was in my acting classes.
I am so saddened to learn of this; which I did on NPR this am.
I hadn't heard his name since college ; but his image came screaming back at me with his vibrant, funny, and talented self.
He was an awesome, AWESOME guy. What a horrific loss for us alland most painfully for his wife and their future little girls;who would have had such a fun time growing up with their silly and loving dad.
I am truly , deeply saddened this moring. Rest well, Bill...you were awesome and you did much to make our world better while you were here.

I didn't know Sgt. Cahir, but my heart -felt condolences go to his family and all his dear friends and military family of friends. I am sure everyone is proud of him and of his sacrifices he made for our country. My son is a true soldier also - his active duty after 3 years in the Army ended on 911. But he enlisted in the TX Army Reserves and has been activated many times since then, he is still in the reserves and like Sgt. Cahir he is very proud to serve.
