Vic Mizzy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 20, 2009.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Vic Mizzy, a songwriter who composed the catchy themes for the 1960s TV comedies "The Addams Family" and "Green Acres," has died. He was 93.

Mizzy died Saturday at his home in Bel Air, his manager Jonathan Wolfson said. He said he didn't know the cause of death.

He wrote songs that were recorded by Dean Martin, Doris Day, Perry Como and Billie Holiday in the '40s and '50s. His hits included "Pretty Kitty Blue Eyes," "My Dreams are Getting Better All the Time," and "With a Hey and a Hi and a Ho-Ho-Ho."

But his most famous work was the theme to "The Addams Family," a tune accented by finger snaps and opening with the cleverly quirky lyrics: "They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're altogether ooky: the Addams family."

Mizzy sang the song himself and overdubbed it three times to give the impression of multiple vocalists. He also directed the title sequence where he asked actors who played members of the Addams family to snap their fingers in a bored way.

The enduring tune is often heard during sports games to rally the home team.

"He was smart enough to demand to own the song, which was unheard of at the time. So any time you go to a Lakers game and they play that song, he made money," Wolfson said.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mizzy learned to play the piano as a child. In his teens, he teamed up with Irving Taylor and began writing songs and sketches for variety shows. They won a pair of radio contests and toured the East Coast vaudeville circuit. While serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, the pair wrote several hit songs, including "Three Little Sisters" and "Take It Easy."

Mizzy later composed and wrote songs for television and film, most recently a song for "Spiderman 2" which ended up on the DVD version of the movie.

He is survived by a brother, daughter and two grandchildren.

I wish I found this earlier. I've been a fan of Vic Mizzy's musical talent since I was six. I remember the age, because that's when "The Addams Family" premiered. You were not only the greatest composer, but you were, a great human being. I watched your interview on the American Archives video, you did back on March of 2004.
You are greatly missed. You were that one spark in the Universe that was so unique, that never has or ever will be seen or heard from again.
My deepest condolences to your loving family. It's true. The whole world is singing your song.

For Vic...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Dr. Mizzy, aka "Uncle" Vic,

You've played an important role in my life...my family's life...and my dad's life. I will always cherish the memories of your visits to my family's home, your attendance at my wedding in 1982 (the "Mizzy Mafia" picture that was taken!), and when you treated me and Mitch to drinks at the Polo Lounge and Dinner at Mr. Chows!

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

What a great loss but the memorable tune of the Addams family lives on...We would hear the music on the television from other parts of the house and come running so we could watch our childhood show what fond memories. Just as we can remember your songs you can be sure Gods promises for you are to likewise be remembered during this time. “The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life.”—John 5:28, 29.

I LOVED YOUR T.V. GHOULISH THEME SONGS,"THE ADDAMS FAMILY,AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE MUNSTERS!WHAT I THOUGHT WAS GREAT WAS THE FACT THAT THERE WERE THREE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THE MUNSTERS THEME TO LISTEN TO AND ENJOY.THE THREE STOOGES ALSO HAD THREE VARIATIONS ON THEIR THEME SONG.BOTH WERE INDELIBLY MEMORABLE ON THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF THE BABY BOOMERS WHO GREW UP TO SOPHISTICATED CAMPY HUMOR,SOMETHING THAT HAS BECOME A LOST ARTFORM ON THE CURRENT GENERATION.LIKE ENNIO MARRICONE WRITING THE MUSICAL SCORES FOR ALL THE SERGIO LEONE SPAGHETTI WESTERNS,MR. MIZZY,YOU HAVE PUT YOURSELF IN THE PANTHEON OF BRILLIANT MUSIC SCORERS!NOT ONLY WERE YOU MEMORABLE FOR YOUR SPIKE JONES LIKE TUNES,THEY WERE AS MEMORABLE AS YOUR PROLIFIC OUTPUT.I ONLY KNOW HOW TO PLAY ONE SONG ON THE KEYBOARDS,BUT EVERYTIME I WALK INTO A RADIO SHACK,I FIND SOME DISPLAY KEYBOARDS LAYING ON A RACK AND SWITCH ON CHURCH PIPE ORGAN SETTING,CRANK THE VOLUME UP SO EVERY CUSTOMER IN THE STORE CAN HEAR MY MAD MUSICAL SCIENTIST IN ACTION,AND I GIVE THEM A REAL COOL,TWISTED VERSION OF THE MUNSTERS THEME,EMBELLISHMENTS AND ALL.THEN I WALK PAST THE CONFUSED SALESPEOPLE AND POLITELY TELL THEM THOSE ARE SOME NICE KEYBOARDS AS I WALK OUT THE DOOR.IT HANGS 'EM UP EVERY TIME.I'VE BEEN CARRYING ON THIS TRADITION FOR YEARS NOW;LIKE YOUR MUSIC,IT NEVER GROWS OLD AND IS ALWAYS A DELIGHT TO LISTEN TO.THANK YOU FOR EXISTING AND BEING AN INSPIRATION IN MY LIFETIME.PEOPLE THESE DAYS NEED TO LOOSEN UP AND NOT TAKE IT SO SERIOUSLY,VIC.ALSO,THANKS FOR SHARING THIS RECIPE AND LEAVING THE INGREDIENTS BEHIND...

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Mizzy family. We have enjoyed the musical talent of Vic Mizzy as a part of our childhood memories and we thank him for that. At this time we know that you are in need of comfort in the days to come and we would like to leave you with a scripture to remind you that Almighty God is always there to provide you with comfort. It is found in the book of 2 Corinthians 1:3,4 which tells us "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those in any sort of tribulation through the comfort with which we ourselves are being conforted by God." May you find strenght in the knowledge that God cares about you and that he is always there to provide comfort and to help you through the days to come.

When the news of Mr. Mizzy's death came on the news and she heard the theme song she said, "Hey that's the days of the week song." I will have memories of Mr. Mizzy for the Addam's Family theme and my daughter will think about the theme every time she remembers how she learned the days of the week.

May your family find comfort while dealing with your loss. (2 Corinthians 1:3,4)

My boyfriend sings the theme to Addams Family to me all the time. He kind of changes the lyrics to my parent's last name. We get a kick out of that song. You left behind alot of fun!!!
