Robert Rines Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 3, 2009.
BOSTON (AP) — Robert H. Rines, a lawyer, composer, inventor and physicist whose discoveries led to sharper resolution in radar, sonar and ultrasound imaging and who claimed to have seen the Loch Ness Monster, has died. He was 87.

Rines died of heart failure at his home in Boston on Sunday, surrounded by his family, his wife, Joanne Hayes-Rines, told The Associated Press on Monday.

Rines invented prototype radar and sonar technology that was later also incorporated in ultrasound imaging of internal organs. He donated the radar patent to the U.S. government and gave the imaging patent to the rest of the world to use for free, Hayes-Rines said.

Rines held more than 80 patents. The radar technology patent — developed while he was a student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology's radiation laboratory and honed while serving as a U.S. Signal Corps' officer during WWII — formed the underlying technology used to guide Patriot missiles during the 1991 Gulf War and produce early warning missile-detection systems and other sophisticated military hardware.

He also wrote music for more than 10 Broadway and off-Broadway productions and shared an Emmy for his work on a piece about former New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia.

Born in Boston, Rines graduated from the MIT and received a law degree from Georgetown. He completed a doctorate thesis at National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan.

He also is the founder of the Franklin Pierce Law Center in New Hampshire, the state's only law school that is also known for its intellectual property law program, and the Academy of Applied Science, a nonprofit group that promotes creativity and interest in science.

Rines used some of his inventions in attempts to prove the existence of the Loch Ness Monster, and claimed to have seen Nessie in 1971.

Bob was one of the funniest, smartest men I ever met - a true renaissance man. I still sing the very funny song he wrote about Nessie for his children's book.... "Oh, oh, oh oh, ooooooohhhh. I'm a perfectly possible, plausible plesiosaur..." The world has lost a truly great man. My deepest condolences to his faily and all who loved him.

Many, many years ago, when a student at Tufts back in 1971, I wrote to Mr. Rines out of the blue in connection with a sighting of a strange creature washed ashore in Scituate, Mass -- shocked that the gov't then reported it as a (very different) rotting basking shark. Although he did not know me, he took the time to respond, and to send me his already-prepared rebuttal to the Woods Hole "basking shark" line. I have had no contact since, but always remember him from this experience. Quietly pursuing his truth.

To the Rines family, I am very sorry for your loss. I didn't personally know Robert Pines, but I know he has given alot of his gifts to the world. Death is very painful & always untimely. In your times of grief, please know that,..."God is healing the broken-hearted ones, & is binding up their painful spots." (PSALMS 147:3) Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

We didn't know who this man was, but we did fancy his intellectual integrity for inventing something so useful for our country! Thank you so much Robert Rines, you have showed your invention to the nation and we respect you for it....May you rest in peace, but not forever...as God promised us.

To all the Rines family: Bob was the father I didn't have. He took me fishing, he taught me electricity, and he helped financially in my later education. I am forever thankful to have known him and some of his associates. Thanks, also, for your kindness over the years.

I only met Bob once, in your his at Drumnadrichit last year, with his wife and some of his family. It was a most enjoyable visit when we spoke about putting outrholographic camera on his next cruise in Loch Ness. I was most impressed by his enthusiasm for his work and amazed by his range of achievements. His search for the transmitters in Loch Ness is something I want to follow up. A memorabl eman and sadly we will not now get the chance to wor together.

I am truly sorry for your loss. Hold fast to his promise . . . . "He will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away." What a glorious day we have to look forward to.

I met Mr. Rines in 1971 as a very young court reporter, when he was serving as a special master in a lawsuit involving the aerospace industry.

Over the course of six months of hearings I observed the dignified, imaginative and impartial manner in which he conducted the proceedings, as well as receiving a wonderful introduction to the world of patent and technical law. The experience I gained there has been invaluable throughout my career.

Mr. Rines always treated this young fellow with the courtesy he would afford to a fellow professional, for which I have always been grateful. I credit my acquaintance with him for a good portion of the career success I have enjoyed in the ensuing thirty-plus years.

Even though I only met Mr. Rines a few times when he traveled down to Lord Corporation, I and my son are forever greatly indebted to him, in that if it was not for Mr. Rines and his founding of FPLC, I would not have met my Dear Wife Silvy, who died this June. God plants roses and at some point picks those roses. I thank you Mr. Rines for all that you have brought me and the world, and may God bless you and your family.

To Mr. Rines’ family it is with great sympathy and gratitude I offer my sincere condolences.
