Frances Reid Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 4, 2010.
NEW YORK (AP) - NBC says Frances Reid, who played matriarch Alice Horton on "Days of Our Lives" for four decades, has died in Los Angeles. She was 95.

The network says Reid died Wednesday.

She was among the original cast of the daytime soap opera, which premiered in 1965. Reid starred opposite Macdonald Carey, who played her husband until his death in 1994.

Her final appearance as a regular was in 2007.

Reid made appearances on episodic TV and other soaps including "As the World Turns." In the 1950s, she performed on anthologies such as "Studio One" and "Philco Television Playhouse" during what is recalled as TV's Golden Age.

Reid received the Daytime Emmys' Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.

She was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, in 1914.

Frances Reid was the perfect example of the perfect American mother, grandmother and great grandmother in her long running role as Alice Horton. As her and Macdonald Carey were the original stars of Days of our Lives, now we get to see their grandchildren and great grandchildren on the forefront of the show. Days has such an iconic place in the history of television and has touched millions of hearts as it continues to.

As a male, we don't usually watch soaps but for some reason I like Days of our Lives and just to see how all the cast came together really did my heart joy. Hope really got me and I found myself having tears forming in my eyes. Mrs. Reid you were a wonderful actress and always gave sound advice that I used for myself. Even though it was just a show, to me it was more. May you Rest in Peace!

With my busy schedule I wasn't always able to watch. But thank you for DVR as I DVR all the episodes. I started watching Days with my Grandmother and as I watched this memorial today it made me cry as my own Grandmother is 98 and I think of what it will be like when she is gone one day. Alice will be missed!! I'm proud that Days waited and did her funeral justice!!

June 28, 2010

Watched the memorial service for "Gram" and cried as if she were my own grandmother. The cast was very sincere in their tribute and it was obvious that they, too, had lost not just a cast member, but a family member. Frances Reid was every family's matriarch. I thought it was touching to revisit scenes of her with MacDonald Carey. They had the only marriage on the show that worked and lasted. Rest in peace, Frances. You were a real class act!

We miss Francis Reid, but we also miss MacDonald Carey they both were icons. It is so great how Days keeps Macdonalds memory alive by keeping his voice on the Days of our Lives beginning and second half.I hope they keep it up and they need to keep Francis's memory alive somehow in the upcoming years. Days is the only soap I watch and I can say I have watched it for 42 years and I am 42. Alice and Tom were both great icons and they will be missed. We love and miss you Alice and Tom (Francis and MacDonald

For Frances...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.
