Giuliana Camerino Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 11, 2010.
MILAN (AP) - Giuliana Coen Camerino, designer of handbags carried by Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor and others, has died at age 90.

Camerino died overnight in Venice, home of the fashion house she founded in 1945 called Roberta di Camerino. She suddenly took ill on the nearby peninsula of Istria, on the eastern shores of the Adriatic, according to a statement Tuesday by her fashion house.

Camerino is credited with making handbags a fashion item. Her distinctive and timeless bags would typically sport brass clasps created by Venetian craftsman who make accents for gondolas or be made of velvet woven on antique looms.

Born Coen, Camerino started designing handbags while in exile during World War II in Switzerland, where she fled to escape persecution of Jews in Italy. She created the name for her fashion house, which also made shoes and apparel, from the 1935 film "Roberta" starring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, and her husband's family name.

Her talents were recognized by the Whitney Museum of American Art with an exhibit in 1980.

Venice Mayor Giorgio Orsoni called Camerino a "friend and great Venetian entrepreneur ... who contributed to spreading the name of Venice and Made in Italy in the whole world."

She will be buried Thursday in Venice's Jewish cemetery. She is survived by a son, Ugo, and a daughter, Roberta.

I hope these words will be encouraging to you and your family. [God] will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore.—Rev. 21:4.
When God’s will is done on earth, people will not get sick or die because of inherited sin and imperfection. The dead in God’s memory will have the opportunity to live forever, for the Bible promises: “There is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Acts 24:15) There will be no more war, illness, or hunger, and the earth will be transformed into a paradise. Even animals that are now dangerous will be at peace with humans and with one another. (Ps. 46:9; 72:16; Isa. 11:6-9; 33:24; Luke 23:43) With such marvelous blessings resulting from Kingdom rule, it is no wonder that Bible prophecy speaks of life at that time in these comforting words: “The meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.”—Ps. 37:11.

I regret you lost your loved one.

Dear Camerino Family and all of Giuliana's loved ones and friends - in the fall of l968 - I first traveled to Venice and went shopping with my Mother and the first place we found, through our friend Trudy (Mrs. Alexander Marx) was your Mother's wonderful shop. I have at the moment sitting on my desk a bottle of the original Donna R Eau de Toilette (half full). When the shop opened in Houston, I was able to keep my supply of my favorite fragrance always on hand... and years later, when Neiman Marcus carried it I bought every bottle they had.. I have kept all of my Mother's Roberta Handbags and my Father's Roberta Ties. I cannot bear to part with them. All of this to say - everytime I gaze lovingly at the rememberances of Giuliana's taste and beauty, I am honored to have met her over the years and am grateful and blessed by her legacy. May all the love, laughter and wonderful memories that you have shared for a lifetime be the soft cushions that your aching hearts may rest upon. Carol Ericsson, Houston, Texas

I am very sorry to hear about your loss. Please take comfort from Psalms 34:18. Jehovah is near those that are broken at heart, and to those who are crushed in spirit he saves. God cares about us and will strengthen us durring our lowest moments in life. The pain may never go away but God will help you to cope with it and carry on. Your family will be in my prayers.

To the Family: May God grant you His peace in your time of loss. Her contributions to society are timeless.

I have often wondered why I have such passion about handbags: It must be the patterned behavior of the women from the 1950s passed on to me by my mother. I am passionate about which handbag goes with which outfit, especially at age 61.

Our Heavenly Father knows that losing a loved one to death causes us great pain. Your tears are not unnoticed. Although your deep pain will not easily disappear, prayer to God will bring comfort to you as you grieve. The Bible assures us God "is healing the broken hearted ones, and is binding up their painful spot." Please accept my deepest sympathy.
