Jose Lima Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 23, 2010.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jose Lima lived over the top on and off the baseball field. The free-spirited pitcher could deliver a song as well as a fastball, leaving a trail of fun and laughter known as "Lima Time" wherever he went.

The All-Star right-hander who spent 13 years in the major leagues died Sunday, according to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was 37.

Lima, who pitched the Dodgers to their first playoff win in 16 years in 2004, was in full cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived at his Pasadena home early Sunday morning, police said in a statement. He was pronounced dead at Huntington Memorial Hospital.

The specific cause of death has not been determined, and Los Angeles County coroner's officials will perform an autopsy, the statement said. Pasadena police detectives also are investigating.

"Lima was an exceptional man," said Winston Llenas, president of Aguilas Cibaenas, a winter ball team that Lima had played for in the Dominican Republic. "This is a great loss for Dominican baseball and the country."

Lima posted his best season with the Houston Astros in 1999 when he was selected to the All-Star game. He went 21-10 with a 3.58 ERA in 35 starts for the NL Central champions.

"It saddened me greatly to hear of Jose's passing," Astros owner Drayton McLane said. "He was truly a gifted person both on the field and off of it. He could dance, he could sing, but his best gift of all was that he was an extremely happy person. He just lit up our clubhouse with his personality, which was his greatest asset. Jose was not shortchanged in life in any way. He lived life to the fullest every day."

Lima spent the majority of his career in Houston, compiling a 46-42 record from 1997-2001.

He revived his career several times, bouncing between the independent league and the minors. The Dominican pitcher was 89-102 with a 5.26 ERA in 348 games in the majors, with his last appearance a four-game stint with the New York Mets in 2006.

"When you faced Jose Lima, you didn't know what to expect from him," said Mariano Duncan, Dodgers first base coach and former major league infielder. "He had a good fastball, a good changeup and good breaking ball. He was a good baseball player and a good friend. Nobody enjoyed the game more than him, and we're going to miss him."

Popular with fans and animated on the mound, his merengue music became a familiar fixture in the Astros clubhouse.

"He was a man full of life, without apparent physical problems and with many plans and projects on the agenda," his wife, Dorca Astacio, told ESPNdeportes.com.

On Friday night, Lima attended a game at Dodger Stadium, where he was introduced between innings and received an ovation from the crowd.

"Horrible news. It's so sad," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. "His energy was infectious. It's a big loss. He was a showman and a hot dog, but he won games. He willed himself to do it. He always had a smile on his face."

Lima went 13-5 with a 4.07 ERA in 2004 after making the Dodgers as a non-roster invitee to spring training.

In the National League division series, Lima pitched a five-hit shutout against the St. Louis Cardinals in front of a sellout crowd at Dodger Stadium. It was the Dodgers' first postseason win since Game 5 of the 1988 World Series.

"55,000 people screaming his last name, 'Lima, Li-ma, Lima,'" said Mets infielder Alex Cora, who started at second for Los Angeles in that 2004 game. "It was amazing."

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt called Lima's electric personality "unforgettable."

"He had the ability to light up a room and that's exactly what he did every time I saw him," the owner said in a statement.

McCourt said Lima further endeared himself to fans when he sang the national anthem and "God Bless America" at a home game in 2004. He performed with his band at the team's annual Viva Los Dodgers celebration.

Lima often sang and danced at Astros functions around Houston.

"He had a great flair and such enthusiasm for life," said Tal Smith, president of baseball operations for the Astros. "'Lima Time' was a special time. 'Lima Time' was whenever he was pitching, or at any event or club function or civic function that he was at. He'd get up and sing and dance, and he was very, very good. He was a real entertainer."

Lima's on-field enthusiasm was sometimes misinterpreted as disrespect or arrogance by older players taught not to show their emotion.

"Those kind of guys got their feathers ruffled at first," former Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker said. "But once you got to know Jose, you knew he didn't have a harmful bone in his body. He was happy-go-lucky, he always had a smile on his face, and he seemed to wake up every day raring to go and looking to do something good in the world."

Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila played against Lima last winter in the Dominican league. He recalled Lima would run over to him during warmups to say hello and wish him luck.

"He was still enjoying it like if he was a kid out there," Avila said. "Anytime he pitched anywhere over there, it was like a party for him."

The Dodgers said Lima had joined their player alumni group within the past month and was preparing to open a youth baseball academy this summer in Los Angeles.

Former Dodgers teammate Guillermo Mota said Lima loved to spend time with fans.

"He would sign autographs all the time and ask the kids, 'What time is it?' They would answer 'Lima Time!' I can see it right now," said Mota, now a San Francisco Giants reliever.

Lima also pitched for Detroit and Kansas City.

In 2005, when the Royals ended a 19-game losing streak, Lima broke out bottles of Dom Perignon champagne to celebrate and offered $1,000 to whoever most helped the team win the next day.

Lima's younger brother, Joel, is a right-hander in the Dodgers' minor league system.

Funeral arrangements were pending.

I was a bartender at a hotel when Lima showed up and ordered a Brandy. I didn't know who he was until he told me his name. My friend Lucy Enriquez and I took him around clubbing and from there, that's how we got so famous is because of Lima Time. He would always say, Its Lima Time. Rest In Peace Lima & my deepest condolences to the family.

I just wanted to let all of Jose's family know how many smiles, good memories, and happiness "Lima Time" brought to all those who were lucky enough to spend time with him. I have so many funny stories from over the years hanging out in Milwaukee and the rest of the midwest cities he visited. A whole group of us "regular people" would get together and go out when he called when he came through the midwest--none of us are fancy, famous, or rich...just average people. Once he jumped up on a bar and started singing the National Anthem to honor some military people that were in the bar at the time. On another occasion a friends vehicle broke down and he hopped out and with his stylish suit and all, started pushing it down the streets of Milwaukee. And his song he would always be singing...when I listen to his CD now I have to smile and laugh. He also would hang out at the stadium in 95 degree heat signing for everyone saying that there will come a time when his career would be over so he wanted to make the most out of it while it lasted. He certainly made the most out of his life and made many people happy along the way. It will always be Lima Time.

I HAD TO GO AWAY

I had to go away.
I'm sorry you couldn't come with me.
But on earth is where you shall stay.
Please do not be sad.
Instead laugh and be glad.
I'm in a beautiful place, such a beautiful place.
I know you wont see me for a while.
But you will hear from me.
I will be the wind that will chill you on a hot summer day.
I will be the sun that will warm you when it's cold.
Listen to the birds sing, I will be saying, "I love you" in their song.
I know you can't touch me.
But you will feel me.
Because I will be inside of you giving you life on the days you feel like you can't go on anymore.
Please I beg of you, go on, live your life as I lived mine.
Always remember we will be together again.
I will be patiently waiting for you on that day.
When you will join me in this beautiful place.
Until then may God bless you with his almighty grace.

When I think of Jose, I remember a snowstorm in July...July 4th in Houston to be exact. You see, July 4th is Jose' Jr's Birthday and Jose and Melissa had the front yard covered with snow for his party. Next year was a small carnival with petting zoo directly across from their house. Then there were the Halloween Parties..always fun and Jose & Melissa loved to dance (salsa of course)

Jr will have no party this July 4th...no Lima Time..Are there baceball diamonds in heaven?

Imagine how excited we were when returning from my son's team winning the STATE Little League game, then finding out that our new neighbor was Lima! He signed a bucket of balls, one ball for each boy that won State that year. Those boys are now 21, but I know they each treasure their Lima balls...Jose & Melissa took my son (& Jr) to the Monster Truck Rally...there were so many fans who came up to Jose that they had to get a police escort back to their car....My son at 10, getting a police escort...

When you called his cell phone, you would get his voice mail..."It's Lima Time"...We had no idea that he was cramming a life of laughter into only 37 yrs.
We will miss you Jose & our prayers to Jose Jr who will have a very empty Birthday this year.

To Jose's wife; you don't know me, but Jose and I came into pro ball together 21 years ago with Detroit. We where buddies from the start. His smile and personality was hard to resist, I even enjoyed his singing on long bus rides and plane trips. I will cherish the years we had with the Mudhens and the years prior.

One thing Jose seemed to have mastered, that was very difficult for us ballplayers, was the ability to seperate what happens on the field (good or bad) from his personal life. The man loved life, plain and simple, and I will miss him like I miss my own brother. May GOD bless you and his children!

My thoughts and prayers are with the Lima family and friends. I was so sadden by the loss of Jose. I met him one night playing cards at the casino in Kansas City, he had pitched that afternoon. I didn't know who he was, he asked me if I knew him and I said "jokingly a minister?" He was laughing, he would take his Big hand and cover my eyes so I couldn't see the cards. He would say now bet!! I trusted that smile and that night I walked out a big winner. He and I played cards for many hours and he was so much fun. I felt like I knew him forever and he treated me as a equal. He was an example to many athletes to treat his fans with respect, Many people approach him that night and he was so grateful and respectful. He Never acted annoyed..he in my eyes was a professional I wanted my children and grandchildren to look up too. Jose will be missed. Rest in Peace.. God took a great guy home.

The Baseball World has lost a unique player. I met Jose in 1995 and have followed his career ever since. I sure put a lot of miles on my car by going to tons of games to see him play. It was worth every gas tank just to see him and spend time with him after the game. He always made me laugh every time I saw him. I was in shock when I heard he passed on May 23, 2010. It's just not going to be the same in baseball now that he is gone. He brought a lot on and off the field. Always taking time for his fans and I will never forget Jose. He has been a true friend the past 15 years. I will always enjoy my friendship I had with him and all my autographs he signed for me over the years. Thanks for the memories Jose. I've been blessed to have known you for the past 15 years. May you rest in peace.

I met Jose in 2006 when he was pitching for the Met's farm team the Norfolk Tides. I was hawking programs and he was sitting near me listening to his Latin music and doing a pitch count. We chatted about his ex-team the Royals. He was just so extra friendly, bubbly, and enjoying life. Baseball and all it's fans will surely miss him. I'm thankful to have had the pleasure and honor to meet him.

The world has lost one of the best. He loved life and he knew how to live it to the fullest. We met him in 1995 in Florida at the Spring Training Camp for Detroit and remained friends over the years. Most best memory is when he came to Cincinnati and we called him and he was dressed in his suit waiting for us to pick him up to show him Cincinnati. We loved him and would travel to see him if we knew he was going to be close to drive to spend some time with Jose. He would make you laught and make your day and thank God for what we all can remember about our own personal Lima Time. May he rest in peace. I would love to get ahold of his family to share some of our pictures of their loved one.

My son is one of the bat-boys for the Calgary Vipers. Jose was with long Beach and then the Edmonton Capitals of the Golden Baseball League last year and Jake and Jose formed an awesome bond. Jake was very nervous being the "away team" bat-boy and Jose immediately took Jake under his wing and they had a great time right from the start. I thank him for being that kind of a person... to take the time with an 11 year old boy and give him the confidence to be himself and be the best that he could be. Jake is very sad today, and so are we , that we lost such a great man. Our thoughts are with your family. You will be missed here in Canada. What a privilege it was to know Jose Lima. He was as charasmatic in person as he was on the field. He had a way that made you feel like you were part of his family. He was so much fun - laughter and energy!! That is how I will remember him - and as my favorite Astro EVER!! Rest in peace, Jose...and my prayers are with your children and family at this time.
