Johnell was my cousin and I loved her dearly. I was much younger than her and always wanted to spend the week-end with her in Tullos,LA. I grew up in Jena which was about 15 miles From her. I stayed in touched with her until she left Louisiana. When I found out she was in New Orlean, I did every thing to find her and I did. We stayed in touch on and off. When the water flooded the city I called and emailed for months and found out the devastating news that she did not make it out. When a member of a family has died it leaves a void that last a lifetime and pain that never heals!! I just watched Life Beyond Katrina and all that I felt on that day I heard the news of her death overwhelmed me but also let me know that all is never forgotten.
We will always Love her and miss her!!!

I contacted a friend and fellow Slidellian concerning the whereabouts of my former roommate from Southern University in Baton Rouge. I was shocked when he told me she perished in Hurricane Katrina. We had some good times at SU as roommates. She will never be forgotten. To her family, though the years have come and gone since Katrina; our prayers and sympathy are with you even in this hour.

My heart was deeply sadened to find out that my dear friend was gone. We attended UNO together for coding and she brougt me home every night from class. We had a class together. She brought such joy to my soul just knowing her. We would talk every morning before she went to work and at night before she went to bed. I will miss her deeply. Paris my heart bleeds for you but my prayers are with you. She loved you so much and was proud of you.

I too found out tonight that my dear friend was gone. What a shock it was to find out on television! I just figured she was with her family in the country. I left numerous messages on her phone and emails. I knew something was wrong when I never heard back from her. I just didn't want to believe the worst. Johnell and I met around 1988 and have kept in touch over the years. I looked through my email, and the last one I received from her was July 12th, the day after her birthday, telling me what a great time she had had the night before. We had that kind of relationship where we might not talk for a few months, but then one of us would call the other and we would chat for hours, catching up on everything. Johnell, you were a bright spot in my life, I'll miss you girl. God Bless you and be in peace. You are much loved! Paris - if you see this please contact me. With love and deepest sympathy

Mary also known as "Johnell" was a dear friend. We met our freshman year at Southern University in Baton Rouge in 1972, and became friends immediately. We kept in touch through the years, and the past few years we emailed each other until Hurricane Katrina. However, I kept her on my email list, I just thought she was displaced. I didn't know that she had perished in the storm until I saw her son "Paris" on Spike Lee's "When the Levees Broke". It hurt me deeply to find out what had happened. Rest in peace my friend. . . you are gone physically but your soul lives on! You will remain in my heart forever. God Bless You!
