The Rev. Arthur 'Red' Ginart, 1941-2005

Legend has it that St. Nicholas of Myra, patron saint of mariners, once prayed over a fierce storm and calmed the roiling waters for a group of seamen. During four decades of hurricane seasons, it often seemed he was doing the same for the Rev. Arthur "Red" Ginart, pastor of St. Nicholas of Myra Church on Lake Catherine.

"Every hurricane we ever had, he never left," former parishioner Lorraine Hagen said. "He would say, 'This is my place; I have to stay.'"

Ginart grew up in the Bywater, the son of immigrants -- his mother was Irish and his father a French jeweler who died when the boy was 2. By the time he was 10, his mother had remarried and young Arthur was sent off to Covington to live at St. Benedict's boys' home.

"He was . . . I guess 'mischievous' is the word for it," said his nephew, Michael Ginart.

Arthur "had a powerful calling at St. Ben's," Michael said, and went straight from there to study for the priesthood at nearby St. Joseph Abbey.

After a stint at Christ the King in Terrytown, he was assigned to St. Nicholas of Myra, a nondescript church that blended inconspicuously among the recreational and residential camps of the Lake Catherine community, a nine-mile peninsula bounded by Lake Pontchartrain to the north and Catherine to the south.

Ginart put his gregarious, people-loving stamp on the parish, becoming legendary -- and beloved -- for his plainspoken sermons and half-hour Masses.

"He was something else," parishioner Jan Parr said. "He could say more in four or five minutes than most priests could say in half an hour."

Ginart would say he liked to get Mass over with so that he could have more time to talk to church-goers afterward. "He just loved people," Michael Ginart said.

Frequent topics of conversation included the fire department -- Ginart, whose firefighter brother died on the job, was a volunteer fireman and fire department chaplain -- and the New Orleans Saints. His devotion to the team was so great, he once renamed the drive leading into the church "Saints Avenue," and an adjoining street "Who Dat Lane," Hagen said.

"One time," she said, "when they were in the middle of a real bad season, he started Mass by walking down the aisle with a bag over his head."

Ginart "loved living in the simple atmosphere of the St. Catherine area," Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes said. He loved it too much to evacuate after saying Mass on Aug. 28, despite the pleas of church-goers, friends and relatives.

Like most of the homes on Lake Catherine, the trailer next to the church where Ginart lived is gone. On Nov. 22 at 11 a.m., Hughes will stand on what remains of St. Nicholas of Myra -- a concrete slab and parts of its wooden frame -- and memorialize "Father Red," whose body has not been found but is presumed to have been picked up by Katrina's tidal surge and washed out to sea.

"We begged him to leave," Hagen said. "He always said, 'When it's my time, it's my time.' I guess his time was now."

I attended Redemptorist High Achool in N.O. from 1965 to 1969. Fr. Red was one of our counselors. Always smiling, always fun and always full of good advice. He was a wonderful person. We loved him. In my eyes he is a saint.

Thank you for all you did for the Lord's people during your earthly ministry, Fr. Red. We visited St. Nicholas of Myra today. May the Lord bless you and keep you in His care, and reunite your human and pastoral families with you in His good time. +

Father Red is still in our hearts. There isn't a day that goes by that I do not think of him. 6 years is approaching so quickly, it seems like yesterday was the last time we saw him. I just wish everyone that knew and loved Father Red had more closure... Help us out on the field this season, Saints need you for another Super Bowl win!! Love you Father Red<3

I recently did a documentary of Father Red and it was showed after the Memorial Mass for Father Red which was held at Ressurection of Our Lord Church on 8/21/10. The life of Father Arthur "Red" Ginart is truly an amazing story. If you are interesting in getting a copy of this DVD which is about 70 minutes long, please contact me via email [email protected].

I had not seen Art in almost 40 years, since we were schoolmates at Notre Dame Seminary. I fondly remember when he, Rudy Schmidt, Andre Constantin, and Crosby Kern--New Orleans seminarians all--would take a few of us non-New Orleans guys with them to the German-American beer hall near downtown for rousing nights of music and good cheer. Art will be missed.

I've never met Father Red, but from some of the entries I've read he appeared to be a wonderful and giving individual. My priest, here in Alabama, mentioned Father Red during one of his sermons and had nothing but, good things to say about him. Peace and God's blessings upon you, Father Red.

Fr. Red i miss you so much especially every Wednesday and every night when i go to call you and see how your day was. I know you know this but you changed me you were my bestfriend and I know that I'm a better person because of that. You were amazing no matter what you were proud of me, believed in me, and best of all no matter how bad life was you always could make me smile. I love you Fr. Red and I miss you dearly you were the best "adopted grandpaw" a girl could have. Thank you.

Father Red was a wonderful man. I last spoke with him several weeks before Katrina at the Louisiana State Firemen's Association Conference in Shreveport. We discussed various things, mostly about his parish and his love for the fire service. He loved being at the fire conference. He loved to make people laugh. He told me laughter has cured more people than any doctor. After spending more than a hour talking to him I spent the rest of the weekend smiling remembering his view on the various things we discussed. I was crushed when I got the email and learned Father Red was missing. I will always appreciate the opportunity knowing Father Red for many years and I deeply appreciate the time we had talking in the lobby August 11, 2005.

God Bless Father Red

I will always remember him and keep him in my prayers.

Dear Father Red,

I had the BIGGEST "little girl crush" on you when I was in the 5th Grade at St. Philip Neri!!! (I hope that's okay to say in all innocence).... You actually made me enjoy going to Mass as a child, which was no easy feate!

God Bless You and May You Rest In Peace.

I remember this gentle giant from the days when he was assistant pastor at St. Philip Neri Church in Metairie.

It is difficult to think he was swept away to sea. I do hope his death was merciful and swift. God bless him and hold him in the palm of His hand.

Father Red,

I can't believe it's almost a year since we've seen your smiling face. We miss you and think of you often. We know you're in a better place.

Father Red was one of those people that when you think of him...you just gotta smile! He was down to earth...he had a terrific sense of humor..his jokes are legendary...and he was devoted to God and to inspiring others to make it through our "human condition" as he called it, and put our trust in God too! I consider myself fortunate to have been a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Parish for several years, where Fr. Red baptized my son and oldest daughter. It was a blessing from God to have had such a wonderful priest as my pastor. I hope he can put in a good word up in heaven for the New Orleans Saints!
