I have several great memories of Bob Shaw. He pitched for the ChiSox in the first major league game I attended in 1961. In 1965 , the day after winning a game for the Giants (which was the day following a game in which an umpire tossed him after only one pitch), he entertained the fans on the first base line during batting practice making one "circus" catch after another. We were greatly entertained. Talk about a life well-lived!!

To the Shaw family:
Only learned today that Bob Shaw had passed away in 2010. Talking to a neighbor, former MLB pitcher, Bob's name came up. My neighbor knew him. I grew up in Garden City. Bob is a pitching legend at GCHS. Around 1954,I worked along side Bob in the GC post office when Bob was a holdout with I believe Detroit. Bob had a great sense of humor and kept us in stitches while sorting mail. I followed Bob throughout his outstanding major league career. I plan to read his book, "Pitching."
Belated condolences to his family.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy. Although we haven't met all of us have experienced the loss of a loved one. I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that you are never alone. Turn to Holy Scriptures for guidance so as to soothe that aching heart. -Psalm 34:18 assures us that God is near to those broken at heart and those crushed in spirt he saves.

Dear Aunt Asta, Karen, Linda, Glenn,
I was shocked to learn about Uncle Bob's illness and passing. He was such a great friend to our father and I treasure many of the memories of coming to Florida to spend time with you all. He was always so proud of his family and was such a generous man. He was also such a strong, vibrant, driven man, I am sorry that he suffered and hope that you are all finding peace somehow. Our dads were great men in their special ways, providing us with much to be proud of. Hold tight to your memories and keep him alive in your hearts. He will be missed. Much love and sympathy,

"Aunt Asta", Karen, Linda and Glenn,
I just learned of the sad news about "Uncle Bob" this morning and can't tell how sad I feel. Bob was my Dad's closest friend for over 70 years and he considered him a brother...He treasured all the times they spent as youth together and even living in the same duplex as new borns..While I didn't share too many times with Bob, he had tremendous influence on me. I was so proud to have an "Uncle Bob" that was a baseball "superstar". I can remember when I was young, when he was the pitching coach for the Brewers. He came to Boston to play the Redsox and visited our house. He took the time to put on clinic for my little league teammates. That night, we were his guests at the Redsox game, where he had us into the locker room to meet the players...To this day, that memory is one of most special memories of my childhood. Incidentally, I was speaking with Dan Duquette, former GM of the Red Sox recently and he said "the best book he ever read on pitching was the one Bob Shaw wrote".Wishing you all well. He was a fine man... He will be missed.
With love, Bill Dromeshauser

ASTA, WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS MY FEELINGS FOR BOB AND NOW FOR YOU AND THE FAMILY. I SHOULD SAY THE "ALL AMERICAN FAMILY". YOU KNOW OF MY FEELINGS FOR BOB
AND MY ADMIRATION FOR YOU AND ALL THAT BOTH OF YOU REPRESENTED. ALL AMERICAN IS THE ONLY WAY THAT I CAN PUT IT. MY HEART IS FULL SO IT IS DIFFICULT AT TIMES TO EXPRESS MYSELF BUT I AM SURE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND.
FINALLY, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY "ASTA", YOU HAVE MY PHONE NUMBER. LOVE YOU AND YOUR WONDERFUL FAMILY AND I WILL NEVER FORGET BOB AND WHAT HE HAS MEANT TO ME AND OUR POST 12 PROGRAM. VERY SIMPLE, HE WAS FAR AND AWAY THE "VERY BEST". LOVE YOU, JACK EASSA
HIS INFLUENCE AND REPUTATION WILL LIVE ON IN THE MINDS AND HEARTS OF EVERYONE THAT KNEW HIM. A DIAMOND IS A DIAMOND AND IF THERE EVER WAS ONE IT WAS BOB.

RIP Bob,
Thanks to Bob Shaw and his coaching, I was able to pitch in a few games with the LA Dodgers. Bob was my pitching coach my first year of pro ball in 1970 at Medford Oregon and his teaching made me a pitcher and not a thrower.
Thanks

My sincere condolences extend to the entire Shaw family at this time. There are few words that can comfort you now but perhaps this story will bring a smile and ease your grief. Growing up in Garden City as a NY Met fan, whenever Bob would come to town to pitch against the Mets we would go to the house on Adams Street, ring the bell and talk to him about the Giants and the Mets and all things important to a 10 year old. This was such a special time for us. One day we told him we were going to the game later that day and he told us to stop by the dugout before the game. To this day, I will never forget how thrilled I was to receive a baseball from Bob Shaw. I lost that ball over the years, but I never forgot the thrill of a young life time. Thanks Bob, I will never forget you. Rest in Peace.

I was a 7-year old South Sider in 1959 and had just discovered the White Sox. How well I remember listening to that magic game on the radio, when the whole South Side came to life to celebrate Bob's fantastic season and that special game. Thanks, Bob, for the memory! TomB

To the Shaw Family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. I never saw Mr. Shaw pitch as a professional baseball player, but I still have my copy of 'Pitching' by Bob Shaw. That book, with it's straight forward approach, excellent pitching drills, sequential photos of Mr. Shaw, and other great pitchers of the time, helped me improve solid pitching mechanics. Those mechanics allowed a very average athlete (me) to develop great control and to take care of my average arm, so that I could spend many summers playing competitive baseball, including some college ball.
Thanks for everything Mr. Shaw and God Bless You and Your Family!

I was 11 years old during the '59 baseball season and lived on the southwest side of Chicago. I absolutely idolized all the White Sox players and clipped every newspaper article on them. I can still recite the opening line up and all the pitchers. Thank you and God rest your soul, Mr. Shaw, and may He comfort your family.

To the Family,
Back in 1960 my father had moved the family (because of his job) to Hicksville, Long island, New York, from the southside of Chicago . My brother Pat and I were big White Sox fans and had sent for the 1960 yearbook. In it we saw that Bob Shaw lived in Garden City, New York , which wasn't far from us. We lookeed him up in the phonebook, then got up the courage to call. I talked to your Dad on the phone and it was the biggest thrill of my 10 year old life.He sent us a postcard , with his picture and autograph on it , which I still have
I will always remember Bob Shaw because he was the first autograph I ever recieved.
My condolences.

I grew up in Apalachin, NY, next to Bob's sister, Dot Doane. When I was just a little kid, I remember Bob taking the time during a visit to play catch with my brother and me. He also would send us pictures from the Milwaukee Braves and SF Giants. I would scan the box scores in the paper to catch his name. One of the highlights of my life was when Bob took us to shiny new Shea Stadium for a game against the Cards. He took us into the locker room and into the dugout - I was 10 years old - what a thrill!
Looking at all of his accomplishments and loving family, he was obviously a great man long after he impressed a young 10 year-old baseball fan. My thoughts and prayers to the family. Jeff Boyce

Bob, Family, Friends & Former players - Not quite sure were to start -but for me it's 1986. As a long time PBC resident- grew up in Lake Worth playing baseball and football( the 70's), the north end of the county( no I-95) seemed sooo far way. Knew some of the players through competition but we all keep pretty much to our region of the county. When I came back to coach baseball at Lake Worth in the early 80's I kept hearing the stories of this guy coaching post 12. When I came in to coach with Tom McKinnon at Palm Beach Gardens in 1986 I got more first hand reports as some of our guys were playing for him in the summer as he was now coaching legion ball in Jupiter. In 86, we won the first District then reginal titles in PBGHS history and the game was on. We had Bob as our guest speaker at the baseball banquet and the challenge was made to continue the success into the summer with Post 126. I was very (didn't really know it at the time) fortunate at the time to be asked to coach on that team. No question that summer's success was not all because of our 86 Gator team, but Bob felt we could use it as a starting block for the summer. All it took was for one conversation with Bob and I knew it ws going to be an interesting ride. I bought in and so did 20 players and 4 coaches and it was a summer I still look on with immense pride and accomplishment. I learned more baseball in those 4 months than at any time or from any one, ever...I won't say it was always easy, but it will always leave a positive mark not only on me but all those I coach in baseball and life. Whether it was watching Rusty or Joe pitch in the bigs, Dan play guitar on the Grand Ol Opry, Rogo coaching at UNF, John A playing at Ga. Tech/Chris at UM, a picture of Reim or Russo in the UF year book, Timmy V. working his way around a courthouse, or Sully taking the field in Omaha with "his" team at the college world series, there are to many accomplishments that resulted from that summer to count. I know I was able to convert the knowledge I gained from that expierence into many positive baseball AND life situations since. I can't think of baseball now and NOT start, with BOB SHAW. And I know I'm not alone. All that from one summer. Fortunitly, Bob was able to to spend many summers as a player and a coach making many 1986's happen. Thanks coach for "my" summer. From the team manager at Spanish River HS to a 1st round draft choice at the University of Florida, the Bob Shaw Experience lives on. Bob, Thanks for the ride and the beleif that I could help. To his family, thank you for allowing Bob to spend so much time at the ballpark. Please know that in this time of sadness, it is shared by many and may that allow you to smile at the thought of Bob as we do. THANKS, COACH. Bill Harvey
