Michael Larsen Obituary
Kathy Averill told The Associated Press that her son, Michael Larsen, died in his sleep at home in St. Paul on Saturday. She says she's awaiting autopsy results.
Larsen and childhood friend Max Keltgen recorded three albums as Eyedea and Abilities on Minneapolis hip hop group Atmosphere's label, Rhymesayers Entertainment. Eyedea and Abilities performed with the group in the late 1990s.
Averill says her son reached people through his music and poetry.

Michael (Eyedea) you will never be truly dead. You have reached me even though you've been gone from this life for some time now. Your music and ideas have kept me alive through things people wouldn't believe. Thank you. I owe you so much. When your music comes on I feel this surge of inspiration I can't explain it. sad to see another person go. i've seen alot of close friends and family pass this year and it hurts so many people its just unbelievable. to the larson family your son enjoyed what he did and lived his life and thats a great thing. his music and soul will last forever!

You really changed my view of what hip-hop was and what it was capable of. I've never heard such articulation of emotions and genius! You instantly became my favorite artist and I was always looking forward to new work from you. I was in denial when I heard this news. I looked at the date to make sure it wasn't April. I know it's way off but I was shook! RIP Mike! Love you! I love the gift you left us! You are immortalized in your music!

Eyedea. Mikey. I met you (and your dog) at a younger age, and I looked at you as a superstar. You've inspired me, and your music has lifted me from some of my darkest places and times. Every time someone asked me who I was listening to, I'd be proud to say "Eyedea. He's from Saint Paul too!" - I can't believe you're gone, but through your songs your spirit will live on. So young he was...my heart goes out to his mother and family. He wanted to share his talent with the world and mom you saw it most, I am sure. Please take to heart the beautiful promise from God at Isaiah 26:19. He has held out a promise that he will fulfill one day in the near future. Death was never his purpose and when his purpose is realized, Life will be the solution. May we do all that we can to have a share in it and welcome back all loved ones we have lost.
