Mrs. McDougald:
Words can not due justice to the sadness I feel with the loss of Gil. As a kid he was my favorite ballplayer and I finally had the chance to meet him. A picture of Gil and myself hangs on the wall in my office. My prayers go out to you and your family.

Mrs. McDougald, Tod and Family -- It was only today that I learned of Mr. McDougald's death. Please accept my heartfelt condolences and sincere sympathy. As one of Tod's classmates at Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C. School in Tenafly, I remember to this day the sense of excitement Mr. McDougald created whenever he would drop off Tod and his siblings for school in the morning. Eager young NY Yankees fans encircled him, many of them (including myself) asking for his autograph. Mr. McDougald was always humble and unassuming -- quite a commendable difference from many of today's professional athletes. Mr. McDougald is and was a legend but never "let it go to his head." I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Dear Lucille, May God comfort you. I was a young boy growing up in Trenton, New Jersey and into a Yankee-loving family watching our beloved Bombers on WPIX Channel 11. I remember Gil's tremendous versatility and absolutely weird stance at bat that produced many hits and solid .280 batting averages and clutch hitting. When I was about 30 I wrote to Gil when I realized he lived not far from me (by then I'd moved to Toms River). I cannot remember what I said to Gil exactly except that I told him what a class act he was and how much I admired him. Gil wrote a hand-written response to me! He spoke about his life with the Yanks and how he could never have played with an expansion team and leave New Jersey. I cherish that letter now. Gil McDougald was an All Star at three positions: second base, third base, and shortstop. My prayers are with all of the McDougald family this Christmas, yet I am sure you will nevertheless be blessed with enormous pride and joy this Christmas because a very good man is with God.

Dear Lucille and McDougald family---Gil was one of our many childhood Yankee idols and his iconic unique batting stance was one we all tried to emulate as though that would make us better hitters. It was such a thrill to finally meet him in person through my father-in-law Art Schlosser in Tenafly when I was an adult-- it was like touching an immortal. Thankfully I got to share in conversation with him as well in Fort Lee and understand what a kind and gentle soul he was. His memory at least will be immortal to all of us whom he touched directly or indirectly and I share in your sorrow.

I had the privilege of meeting Gil MacDougald when I was 13 and a freshman at Kingston High School in Penna. He was the spokesperson for A.S.Beck Shoes and visited various schools. Our Athletic Director knew that I was a diehard Yankee fan and called me into his office and introduced me to Gil. What a wonderful surprise and what a fine gentleman, not to mention great infielder! He came to my school every year and in my senior year, gave me an autographed baseball which I treasure. He will be missed and remembered.
My sincere sympathy to The MacDougald Family.

I grew up in Nutley and was over joyed when I found out that Gil also lived. He was my idol and I use to make my dad drive by his house. I also have a great memory of my dad, a Nutley police office, being invited to Gil McDougald day at Yankee stadium. He brought back a post card with Gil's picture on and I kept it proudly for many years, showing it off to my classmates at school. I wonder where it is now.

Started following the Yankees when I was 6 in '51, Gil was part of that great Era of Yankee teams. Even listening on the radio, you could tell his competitiveness, that desire to win. He was an outstanding athlete, capable of playing three infield positions equally well. Somewhere in the midst of my souvenirs of childhood memories is an autographed picture he sent me in response to my fan letter. Enjoyed watching him play and felt a deeper admiration when YES did a feature that depicted how he was coping with a hearing loss. Loved to see him at OTD.
My prayers and sympathy to his family, friends and the Yankee family. Gil will be missed - R I P #12

My grandfather took me out of school so that I could meet Gil. I was in the 7th grade and he was a guest speaker at a Rotary club meeting in Bridgeport, Ct. I no longer have the ball but I will never forget Gil as my favorite Yankee. God bless the family.

What a name for a baseball player, and what a player he was!
Whenever I hear the term, first baseman, I get a vision of Gil, stretching toward the infield, with his first baseman's mitt open for a catch.
Gil McDougal, They just don't make'um like you any more. They can't.
As a kid, I loved emulating you. I Loved worshiping you. The emulation stopped long ago, but the worshiping will never end.
Thanks for the memories.

I was an 11 year old kid in 1960 watching the Pirates/Yankees World Series, needless to say my all time favorite since I grew up outside of Pittsburgh. That was an era that we will never see again. I came down with rheumatic fever that August, so "fortunately", I got to watch every game since I was at home. Time moves on but I still hate to see my favorite players pass. Peace, strength and comfort to the McDougald family.

I was lucky enough to meet Gil and his wife when I was a kid at a baseball card signing. This was one of my grandfathers favorite players and after he died, I was fortunate to meet Gil. I will miss you. My condolences to the wonderful McDougald family.

I met Gil in the mid 80's when he was invited to our celebrity golf tournament in Utica, NY. He graciously signed a picture for my son and we had a great time together. Living in a Chicago suburb loving the Yankees was not considered good taste, but when I was about eleven the first tv sets were coming in and one of my first recollections was of the yanks and those "bums" in world series games at magnificent Yankee stadium. Two sides of Gil McDougald I remember. I was a Dodger fan. All Dodger fans regretted when Gil came to Ebbets Field. He once told me that he loved to play at that ballpark & between me & you, Gil was a one man wrecking crew in that ballpark in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn. He came to play and some of the close plays between him & Jackie Robinson were amazing. Especially the one at third. In 1970 I had the pleasure & the privilege of working for Gil at Yankee Building Maintenance in Nutley, NJ. As he was leaving one night he asked me to train his son Todd in the night operations. He told me, I know that you will show him the ropes. He was a very kind person & my family & I are very grateful to him for showing me how to make a living. Thank you Gil.

Gil was my childhood hero. I met him at a free baseball academy in an armory in the 50's as a young boy. He was very nice to me and he was king enough to exchange correspondence. My condolences to the entire McDougald family. The baseball world has lost a classy gentleman of the game as well as a champion in a team sport. I'll never forget that unique open stance, clutch hitting, and fine fielding. I remember that fateful day in 1957 when he struck a ball that hit herb Score in the eye and Gil's vow to quit if Herb's vision didn't return. What ballplayer today would have the guts to make good on a vow like that? It was back a number of years ago when I first met Gil. I was working with his son Tod, and was invited to his home for a weekend. It was a time I will never forget, as I had the opportunity to talk with Gil about the Yankees, and even swing a couple of his bats. The hospitality extended by the McDougald's was as if I was family...a truly great time. I asked Gil to come to upstate NY to help us promote a charity golf tournament, and he and Tod both attended..to the delight of all involved, and helped the tournament raise needed funds for local charities.
