I will never forget that morning and watching the liftoff. Though I'd watched many other space missions and watched the Apollo missions, I never thought I would witness a mission failure. It took my breath away. I actually considered and created a cross-stitch in honor of the astronauts but honestly, I couldn't do it, the memory is too sad. My condolences to their families and the mission staff working that day and to those of the Columbia mission. Truly, thank you for your service.

My name is Marty Lehr. I am a songwriter living in New Smyrna Beach, Fl. I watched with great sadness the events as they unfolded on 2/1/03. I was moved to write a song in tribute to the loss of Columbia and her precious human crew. The name of the song is "Used To Be (2.01.03)". The song and lyrics are located at martylehrmusic.com
I believe the song to be a moving and fitting tribute to the Columbia and her crew. Submitted with all due respect. Marty Lehr

STS-107.... We miss you. Everytime I walk past the Statue of Commander Husband at Amarillo International or drive past McCool field in Lubbock I have to look up. The lump in my throat and the glassy eyes are automatic. Such fine examples of the human spirit are needed so badly and sorely missed. God bless the crew of Columbia.

I'm a quite late at signing this memorial book- but that doesnt make me any less sad. I've read many of the entries and they are so brief- yet so eloquent. Where I live there was little, if any, coverage or rememberance of the Columbia tragedy and that makes me so very sad, too. (In the "hick" county I am forced to now live in- SLO Calif-they dont cover much news outside this county!! You need cable to get tv reception except for the local NBC affiliate and I dont always have access to the tv hooked up to cable.) So, if there were any memorial services broadcast, I was unaware of them. But, that will not stop me from taking the time to remember those brave, adventerous young people who paid the ultimate sacrifice doing what they did the best and were happy doing it. God bless the crew and their families as the one year mark continues. May we all learn from them, the crew members coming from 3 countries and consisting of both genders, that we can get along, respect each other and live in harmony.

I pray to God that everyone involved in this tragedy is at peace today and foreverafter. To quote Proverbs 16:1 "We can only make our plans, but the final outcome is in God's hands." I firmly believe this and therefore know that they are all in his hands today. They are safe, happy and at peace, and I know they want their families and friends to be as well. God bless us all!

I feel a great deal of sympathy towards the crew members and their families. I can't even begin to express how sorry i am. I personaly don't believe in space travel. Why send a man into space and risk his life when we can do the same with a robot. If we lose a robot, it's just money, but to lose a person, that's love and life and can never be replaced.

I was awakened on Feb.1 with a phone call about the loss of the Columbia. I was shocked and saddened by the tragedy. My next thoughts were how can I help. I belong to a volunteer group, the Harrison County Sheriff's Posse. We were asked if we would like to volunteer to help look for Shuttle debris. I jumped at the chance to do whatever I could to help. My horse and I went for 3 days and looked for debris. I was amazed at how much there was. At first I couldn't describe my feelings about what we were doing. We didn't notice the rain and the cold, nor did we get tired. When our groups were called in for the end of the day, we didn't want to quit. We wanted to continue to help put together pieces of this tragedy so that hopefully it wont happen again.
On the second day out I knew what our mission was. I discovered it after one of the people on our search crew came in with something that put it all together for me. He found a clump of small American flags that were melted together among many other pieces of the debris. It was found in the middle of a cattle farm outside of Nacogdoches, TX. These American flags told us what we were there for-the lives of some great countrymen and women who went beyond the call of duty, doing a job that helps in betterment of our country and the way we live. Every piece of debris I found represented a part of the astronauts' lives and commitments that they and their families made when they became part of the space program.
Thank you for this commitment and to the sacrifices that you have made so that the world can be a better place. Many people don't realize just how important the space program is. It touches our lives daily and I appreciate it so much.
As a teacher, I shared the story of the search and explained to my students what a sacrifice these faithful 7 made for us. It is because of their work that our great country is what it is today.
I took a picture of the flags from the Columbia and my students said we should name it. They named it
"Freedom Columbia" because freedom is what they think of when they see the American flag.
My students and I are very sorry for your loss. We know that God has received great heroes to add to his list of angels. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always.
