Leroy Hassell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 9, 2011.
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Supreme Court Justice Leroy Hassell Sr., the state's first black chief justice, has died. He was 55.

The court disclosed his death in a brief statement Wednesday that didn't include cause of death or other details.

Hassell was appointed to the Supreme Court by then-Gov. Gerald L. Baliles in 1989. In 2003 he became the court's first black chief justice and the 24th overall. He held the post until the end of last month.

A Norfolk native, Hassell graduated from the University of Virginia and Harvard Law School, then returned to Richmond where he became a partner in the politically muscular McGuire Woods law firm.

When he joined the Supreme Court at age 34, he became only the second black justice on the court after John Charles Thomas.

To the Hassell Family,

Please accept my sincere sympathies during this time of grief. Leroy and I were friends and classmates in Norview's Class of 1973. While I never had the opportunity to see him again, we e-mailed a bit after he became the Chief Justice, reminiscing and making promises to try and get together. Sadly, that didn't happen. He was a great man, and I was blessed to know him and count him as a friend.

very best wishes,

To The Hassell Family,
May warm, loving memories of your husband and father sustain you during these difficult times. Chief Justice Hassell made many, many differences during his lifetime. I still recall his generous “yes” to my request to speak at the 30th anniversary celebration of the University of Virginia Office of African-American Affairs and the inspirational words he shared. As an undergraduate, Justice Hassell was instrumental in its creation. Each year African-American students and students-at-large enrolled at UVA are blessed by the OAAA’s presence and mission – a tribute to Justice Hassell’s wonderful legacy.

Wishing your family God's perfect peace in this trying time. I knew Leroy as a friend from Norfolk, I live in his neighborhood. I have been in Richmond for the past 31 years and would occasionally run into Leroy while out and about around the capital area. We would try to catch up with each others lives in 10 minutes while passing during lunch. I have quietly watched Leroy's success with much pride. I am sadden by his passing and I wish his family all of God's peace.

Going pro se a an African American woman a few years ago in the Supreme Court, I was more overjoyed to be in the presence of history (Honorable Chief Justice Hassell) then I was for being one of the few to have their cases heard at the Supreme court level.
I was so moved and impressed by his brilliance and energy as I watch him in action as he looked me right in the eye seemingly just as surprised and impressed to see in his courtroom. I have had the pleasure of the rare opportunity to do oral argument in front of Chief Justice Hassell and I felt honored regardless of the out come of my case! I will never forget this experience which I have archived in my family history album for my children to share this part of African American History with their children and their children's children. I am grateful for his life! He has been a great inspiration!
May God Bless you all, and may he rest in peace.

Like so many others, I am touched by Leroy's example in life and, particularly, with how we were able to remain connected along our lives' jouneys. We met initially in our first year at UVA and lived next door to one another in our dorm. As an 18 year old, he was a gentleman, a scholar, and a genuine friend. The rest of his life speaks for itself. It was an honor to know him as a remarkable leader and to work alongside him as he sought ways to make a deep, sincere difference in all of the communities he led and served. His spirit and example will live with us all forever.

To: Linda Hassell and family. I met Leroy in 1974 at UVA. It was an honor to watch him excel in his career. Chief Justice Hassell was indeed a great man. Peace is what God brings to His people. Jesus said: “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you” (John 14:27). Even in the worst of times, we have inner tranquillity because our God is in control. May God comfort and heal you and your family, in Jesus Name.

To the family of the Honorable Chief Justice Leroy R. Hassell Sr,

Please except my sincerest condolences and expression of grief to an outstanding jurist. I never had the oppotunity to know your husband but appreciate his success in life, his mission to raise the quality of life for others, his supreme legal knowledge and experience, and his commitment to social justice for everyone regardless of ethnicity, health condition or disability, or social/economic status.

I happen to be the same age (55) as Leroy was and although not a member of the judiciary I followed a similar path in life in many respects: college, Law School, successful legal career as a high level state offical in the Attorney General's Office, beautiful wife with three lovely children, Past school board president in Camden, NJ and of the Walt Whitman Center for the Arts, and a host of other positions committed to public service. I'm extremely proud just to read about Justice Hassell's life and legacy and always remember in your time of sorrow and grief the old African proverb:

"Every time you say his name, a man never dies". And every time you think of him, his spirit remains alive"!

May God continue to bless you in every way and rejoice in celebrating the life of such an honorable man that will truly be remembered.

Sincerely,

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." (Matthew 5:4)

To Linda and the Family of the Late Honorable Hassell: Linda, I have asked God to comfort each of you; to heal your heartache, heal your sorrow; and to help each family member to rest in the strong and loving arms of the One who loves you most.

"The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." (James 5:16) Leroy was a righteous leader for the State of Virginia. God rest his soul.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My Teacher, Chief Justice Hassell.

I am a 2001 graduate of the U of R Law School. In the fall semester of 1999 and the spring semester of 2000, your husband, father, or other relation—the Chief Justice—taught me trial procedure and appellate procedure. I will always remember him as the bright spot of my education. I have never had a more dedicated teacher. I can remember his very words about how to take a law exam: “Show them what you know, never show them what you don’t know.” It was sage advice. I also can remember that he said he taught, in addition to his day job at the Court, because he liked to teach. Then he quipped, “the money is nice, too.” He had a wonderful sense of humor. I really appreciate his advice, because I teach also, in the Community College, part time. I see him every day as I talk to my classes. I remember his words. I remember his concern for me as a student. He genuinely wanted to know what I wanted to do in life. This man, that had oodles of court cases occupying his keen mind. He wanted to help me find a job. He asked me for my resume so he could send it around to his acquaintances. I regret that it’s been a long time since I have talked to him. You see, I never had the heart to tell him that I didn’t pursue a career in law. He knows that, now, but I don’t think it would have lessened his concern for me by a single iota. Regardless of what I do now, I recognize Chief Justice Hassell as one of those once-in-a-lifetime teachers that I was extremely fortunate to have. There is a movie out, called Five People You Meet in Heaven. It is based on a book by Mitch Albom. I know, now, that he is one of my Five people. He will teach me when I enter the next life. He is my guardian angel.

To Family

As we think of our loved ones who have died in the faith, we look beyond to the day when the graves will be opened and we will meet them again. We can be sure that because Jesus lives we too shall live. We may shed tears today in memory of Leroy Hassell Sr. who has died. But as we recall Christ’s death and resurrection, our faith and hope are renewed. Let’s remember! We sorrow not as others do, whose hopes fade like the flowers; there is a hope that’s born God, and such a hope is ours. In life and in death, Christ is our hope.

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

To Cynthia, Joseph, Donnell, Franklin and all of the Hassell family: We are truly saddened by the passing of Chief Justice Hassell. He was a true example of a statesman, respected for his honesty and unbiased concern for those he served. We thank God for him and all of his accomplishments. We will always remember "Leroy" growing up with all of us in Shiloh. The Bible says, "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted." May the peace and love of Christ be with all of you, now and forever. - James and Edvena Foreman, Bruce and Melvena Gregg

Didn't know anything about this Giant amongst Giants. Read about his passing in The Charleston Post and Courier here in Charleston South Carolina. God had place him in our lives and has now taken him to Glory. Justice Hassel is truly a drum major for justice. Virginia has lost a pillar and a statesman.

I grew up around the corner from the Hassell family. Leroy and I were friends growing up,were members of the same church and high school. Leroy always knew what his life calling was and he directed all of his school activities towards preparing himself for public service such as joining the debate team when in the early 1970s the debate team was not popular. May his wife and children as well as his three brothers and two sisters receive comfort from our Lord.

My thougths and prayers are with the Hassell Family in their time of grief.
Please take comfort in knowng that, 'God can give us "power beyond what is normal,"so we can keep going from one day to the next.
(2 Cor. 4:7)
I hope this will bring the family a measure of comfort.

Cynthia, and the entire family of Justice Leroy Hassell, State of Virginia, no words can really help to ease the pain you bear. Just know you are very close in our thoughts and prayers. What a 'magnificant', and BLESSED contribution he made to this nation, and the world!!!Some say he went too soon. Abraham Lincoln said: And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in years.
He always returned to Shiloh with his beautiful family! We're better because of him! God Bless and keep all, in his care.

Mr. Justice Hassell, the man, was a kind and giving individual. He graciously answered my request to speak to the children of the Legal Studies Academy and gave his time to them, staying beyond the time originally allotted to share his experiences and wisdom with them. Carrollyn C. Cox, Esq.
