Nikolai Andrianov Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 22, 2011.
MOSCOW (AP) - Russian gymnast Nikolai Andrianov, whose 15 medals made him the second-most decorated male athlete in Olympic history, has died at age 58.

The International Gymnastics Federation says he died Monday in his hometown of Vladimir, 200 kilometers (120 miles) east of Moscow. Russian news reports said Andrianov had suffered for years from a degenerative neurological disorder.

Andrianov won seven gold medals for the Soviet Union over three Olympics beginning in 1972, including four at the 1976 Montreal Games where he won the all-round. His total of 15 medals was the most of any male Olympian until American swimmer Michael Phelps surpassed him with 16 in 2008.

Andrianov is survived by his widow Lyubov, a two-time gymnastics gold medalist for the Soviet Union.
