Lidia Gueiler Obituary
Her grandson, Luis Eduardo Siles, confirmed her death in an interview with Fides radio. He didn't specify the cause but said she had been sick for weeks.
Gueiler was only the second woman to lead a Latin American nation as president when she held the post for about eight months in 1979-80 between coup d'etats. Isabel Martinez de Peron, the third wife of Argentine leader Juan Peron, was that country's president in 1974-76.
As president of Congress, Gueiler followed Bolivia's constitutional line of succession and assumed the presidency in 1979 after a deadly popular revolt ousted coup leader Gen. Alberto Natusch Busch.
Gueiler called elections but no candidate won a majority to immediately become president as required by Bolivian law. Her cousin Gen. Luis Garcia Meza overthrew her 18 days after the vote, before a runoff coul d be held.
Garcia Meza's government lasted two years, in which it killed and imprisoned dozens of political opponents and cooperated with drug traffickers. Garcia Meza is imprisoned in Bolivia for human rights crimes.
Gueiler fled into exile after her ouster but returned from Chile in 1983.

Those we love left us gifts in the form of memories that no one can take away, wisdom that we can still recall. These are the things that we shall cherish forever. May the family of Lidia be comforted by the words found at Job 33:25 when Lidia will return to the days of her youth as promised. Her efforts to bring peace and security to her country will finally come to fruition as God steps in soon to care for the needs of humankind. - Ps 146:3,4

My sympathy to the family. Death is inevitable. I prey that the Almighty God will give you people fortitude to be the repairable lost and grant her eternal rest. She has done great in the history of women. She left a good legacy. I wish her farewell. She lived life worth of emulating. Kingsley
