Bill Bergesch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2011.
STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — Former Cincinnati Reds general manager Bill Bergesch, who also spent several years in the New York Yankees' front office during a long career as a major league executive, has died. He was 89.

The Yankees say Bergesch died Tuesday at a retirement home in Connecticut.

Bergesch served as the Reds' GM from 1984-87. Some of the players he acquired helped Cincinnati win the World Series in 1990.

Bergesch, a St. Louis native, also held several jobs in a couple of stints with the Yankees, beginning as the traveling secretary and stadium manager in 1964.

He is survived by his son, Robert, of Yarmouth, Maine, daughter, Susan Shanks, of Connecticut, and five grandchildren.

Bob, your Dad was a very loving and compassionate man, and my very good friend. At the height of my career he mentored me. You may recall my visit to his home in Westchester with my children and Charles V. Drew, Senior law Clerk Applelate Div. Supreme Court, NY to see the sailboat race and his treasure room. My deepest condelences to you and your sister.

Susan - So sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. Though I didn't know him well, he was so nice to invite us to Kansas City (when we lived in St. Louis) many years ago to see a ballgame. Hope you are doing well. Again, I'm so sorry to hear of your Dad's passing.

Condolences from Vicki and me to Sue and Bob. I remember your dad very fondly. The summer after my dad died, he took me to a Yankees game where I got to meet a several of my baseball heroes. It was a very gracious gesture on his part and meant a lot to me.

Please accept my sympathy for your loss. May all find comfort in the wonderful promise: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more. Neither mourning, nor outcry nor pain be anymore, the former things have passed away."

"My thoughts and prayers are with the Bergesch Family in their time of grief. At times like these, 'God can give us "power beyond what is normal," so we can keep going from one day to the next. (2 Cor. 4:7)

My sincerest condolences to the Bergesch Family.
We can certainly be assured that Jehovah is willing and able to assist us when we are afflicted with distresses. “God is for us a refuge and strength, a help that is readily to be found during distresses.” (Ps46:1)
