Jose Pagan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 8, 2011.
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Former big leaguer Jose Pagan, who drove in the eventual winning run for Pittsburgh in Game 7 of the 1971 World Series, has died. He was 76.

The Pirates announced his death after learning of it from Pagan's family. No cause was given for his death Tuesday.

There was a moment of silence before Tuesday night's game against Arizona at PNC Park.

Pagan broke into the majors with the Giants in 1959 and was traded to Pittsburgh in 1965, helping the franchise win the World Series in 1971. His double in the eighth inning of Game 7 gave Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead over Baltimore, and the Pirates hung on to win 2-1.

Pagan also played for Philadelphia during 15 seasons in the majors. He hit .250 with 52 homers and 372 RBIs before retiring in 1973.

One of the first major baseball games I attended with Don & Bea Rood was to watch Jose in a Giants game....fond memories of sitting with his wife and Clyde King's daughter.....one on either side of me....an exciting game. I miss these loved ones but will see them again....

I will never forget the first time I met Jose and Delia. It was on a whim that I helped my mother write a letter and dropped it off to his hotel in Los Angeles. I was told he and my father had grown up together. It was the best surprise for my father, Angel Marchand y Rios. They played baseball in a dirt field of Barceloneta as children.
My father has never forgotten that day...the day they were able to rebound and relieve their childhood. Tio Jose gave my father a great gift that day, a rekindling of friendship, childhood memories and laughter.
What a blessing he was...
Tia Delia, abrazos y un besitos from my brother's and father, Angel. Jose and Ramon a big hug for you as well. He spoke so proudly of the two of you!
I am sure Tio Jose and my mother, Gloria are smiling down on all of us.
Blessings, Cheri Marchand Schilling

Jose was our family friend in Bradenton, Florida when I was a boy. He missed his family in Puerto Rico, and spent his time with our family when at training camp. He gave me my first baseball glove. His signature is still on the back. He always gave me countless bats, balls, and memorabilia signed by his team mates. I was the only kid I knew that had a major league baseball player for a friend. He taught me to throw in my backyard. He always left tickets at will call in case we could make the game. He loved his family and God very much. He always carried his bible with him. I remember him stretched out on the floor by the stereo singing along to Johnny Mathis. Many people are probably unaware that he went to dive for the body of his friend Roberto Clemente when the plane crash took his life. He was a giving, kind man that was a major influence on my childhood. I will miss him and remember him fondly. He always talked about his wife and boys and how much he missed them when he was away. Jose lives on in the countless lives he touched. He was a great ball player but also a great man.

As a kid growing up in New Jersey, baseball was paramount in our day-to-day lives. I collected baseball cards and one of my first ones I purchased was a Topps Card of Jose Pagan. It was either 1969 or 1970. When I learned of his death, I could immediately recall what Jose's baseball card photograph looked like. May he rest in peace, and may God's peace that surpasses all understanding rest upon his family.

Was allways fun to watch Jose play. He came up with many clutch hits for the Pirates.
Everyone knew that Clemente and Stargell could hit, but was fun to watch Jose and Manny Sanguillen battle pitchers at the plate.
God Bless the family and relatives. Thanks Jose for all those wonderful memories.
