Kathryn Windham Obituary
Dilcy Hilley told The Associated Press that her mother had a variety of illnesses recently and died at her home in Selma.
According to a biography from the Alabama Department of Archives and History, Windham wrote two dozen books, many of them ghost stories. In 1940, she went to work for the Alabama Journal in Montgomery and was one of the first female reporters to cover the police beat on a major daily newspaper in the South.
From the 1950s to early 1970s, she worked for The Selma Times-Journal where she won several awards for her columns and photography.
She also regularly contributed to the segment "All Things Considered" for National Public Radio in the 1980s.
"She was a remarkable woman unlike anyone we will know for a long time," Hilley said.
Windham was born in 1918 to James Wilson Tucker and Helen Gaines Tabb Tucker and grew up in Thomasville.
Trying to gain the respect of police on her beat at the Alabama Journal, she said she went along with them to a ravine where a child's body was recovered.
"When they saw me stay with them on that one, they accepted me," Windham had told the Montgomery Advertiser. "They knew I could do a good job, just like our male reporters."
While working for the Birmingham News in 1946, she met her husband, Amasa Benjamin Windham. They moved to Selma and had three children before his death 10 years later.
A widow needing to make a living, she went to work for the Selma paper. From 1950 to 1966, she penned a locally syndicated newspaper column, "Around Our House," according to an online biography on the Encyclopedia of Alabama.
Between 1985 and 1987, she did her five-minute NPR pieces, mostly about Dixie, in her Southern drawl.
"She was an amazing woman," said her son, Amasa Benjamin Windham Jr.
"She was very much a trailblazer as a female reporter," said Windham Jr., who followed his mother's footsteps and retired several years ago as an editor for the Tuscaloosa News.
Her eight-book series about Jeffrey the "ghost" who lived in their Selma house sold thousands of copies.
Hilley said her mother wrote her own four-line obituary that talked only of her family. She listed who preceded in her in death, including her husband, parents and one daughter, Kathryn Tabb (Kitti) Windham. Besides Hilley and Windham Jr., she is survived by her grandsons, David Windham and Benjamin Hilley, and several nieces and nephews. She asked that memorial contributions be made to the Friends of the Selma Public Library.
About her short life summary, Hilley said, "That's all she would want."
"She was just wonderful person who was on this earth to bring joy to others and she did that with great pleasure," Hilley said.
Her celebrity in Alabama was widespread, including with the Kathryn Tucker Windham Museum at Alabama Southern Community College in Thomasville.
At Windham's 90th birthday celebration in Selma in 2008, Wayne Flynt, a former Auburn University professor who edits the Encyclopedia of Alabama and researches Southern culture and traditions, described Windham as a unique.
"Some people are important to intellectuals, journalists or politicians, but Kathryn Tucker Windham is probably the only person I know in Alabama who is important to everybody," he said.

I remember her coming to our elementary school and we'd sit on the floor at her feet as she read or told tales. I also remember her being at Riverfront Market Day telling stories. She was and still is a legend in these parts. Her memory will live on as we tell our children and them theirs the stories that she so loved to tell.

As an Illinois "Yankee", I wasn't aware of Kathryn Tucker Windham during her lifetime. Now, the audio recordings of her wonderful stories bring me great joy. I want very much to eat cornbread (with no sugar in it) with her when I get to heaven. Thanks Kathryn for helping me through some very difficult times.

And i will never forget the day i met her at the Kentuck Arts Festival in Northport,Al. when i was 13...and amongst being honored to hear one of her wonderful stories and getting her autograph that i will forever treasure.I will always be a true fan of Mrs.Windham's and may her soul rest in peace

I never met Mrs. Windham, but one of her nieces introduced me to her work about five years ago. I loved it, I've only been able to get one by way of our book store. But my friend Terry Borneman has several that her mother left her, and she loans them to me. We had talked of making a trip to meet her, but Terry's husband got cancer so we never did. That will alway's be my great loss. From what I've been told, Mrs Windham had to have been a person with a wonderful heart. I'm sorry for your loss and for what the world hasalso lost.

I met Ms. Kathryn many years ago at the Young Alabma Banker's Convention at Gulf Shores, Alabama (in the 70's)where she distributed copies of her story about the Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham. I think a bank actually printed those for distribution.
I still have my autographed copy. From that meeting, I attended every story telling in Alabama where Kathryn was speaking and teacher conferences, and started attending the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesboro about ten years ago where she was not only the Matriarch of Storytelling, but the beloved storyteller that everyone wanted to hear over and over. I went to the Methodist Church in Huntsville, AL to hear Katherine and Donald Davis speak only to find out about her fall and illnesses. I will never forget her stories and the wonderful way she had in telling them. The storytelling festival will go on, but will never be the same. I also called to get the Donald David "Remembering Katherine" in the Storytelling Center to find out it was sold out after only six hours. Not surprised. Thanks for the memories. I reread her books often and treasure the wonderful inscriptions she took time to personalize, but my favorite treasure is a post card she mailed me on one of the "Jeffrie cards" to thank me for a picture I gave her last year at Jonesboro. Ms. Tucker and I had a mutual friend but I did not know her personally. And another fan in here in NE Alabama worshipped the ground she walked on.
I heard her at City Stages in Bham in the late 90's. She was telling a story about a fellow who was known for his" shiftlessness."
My Mother was a big fan of Celestine Sibley. I regret she did not know of or get to read Ms. Windham. They woulda had an instant bond.

I saw your mother every year I went to the Storytelling festival. She also was a highlight. I just found out about her death today Sept 6. I was saddened to know that I will no longer be able to see her. I can hear her though, as I have several tapes and cd's also her DVD which I love.She was a wonderful, humerous woman. I first read "13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffery" in 1991 in the Ashford Elementary library (Ashford, AL). I was in love with reading and ghost stories from then on. She peaked my interest. And I wish I could have thanked her for that. When my girls are old enough this will be one of the first books I buy them. My oldest already shows a love for all things spooky and supernatural. I can't wait to share Mrs. Windham's charming southern ghost stories with them. She will live on in my girls.

Mrs. Windham was a great storyteller. We'd an opportunity to meet with her when she visited montgomery in 2008 at Huntingdon College. Since then we've relocated to India. My son Arjun enjoys reading her stories. We will miss her dearly.

When on a social visit with Chip Cooper at her lovely Selma home almost 10 years ago, Kathryn gave me a blue bottle to start a "tree" in my own back yard; and shared w/us the gorgeous casket custom fabricated (but in storage) for when "her time" arrived. Mrs. Windham and Jeffrey have been a part of our family's life since the mid 1970's, when she (and Jeffrey) visited Houston Academy in Dothan. I was fortunate enough to hear Kathryn Tucker Windham many times. Our state is immeasurably richer because of her many talents and her generosity in sharing them. What I treasure most, however, is remembering how she took time to talk to the children and to treat them as though they were valuable and precious individuals.

Alabama has lost a notable and a very remarkable women. A women full of interesting stories and tales about the South. Her books about Southern Ghost was some of my favorite reading as a child and as well into my adult years. I am glad that I had the opportunity to have met her on several occasions. On one of those occasion I learned that she and I had a common mutual friend. This friend was a very close and dear friend to my family. He also performed my marriage to my wife not to long before his death. She told me a very funny story about him on a date they had during their high school days. The way she describe him and his actions sounded very much like him. I am glad she allowed me to record that personal story to tape. So, all play their hair combs "I'll Fly Away" strong and loudly in celebration of her life as she had wished. My condolences to her family, she will be greatly missed.

I am one of the millions of Kathryn Tucker Windham fans. My greatest memories of her in person are from the summer reading activities I attended several times in the nineties at Samford. I well remember her story of the time Selma was trying to restore its good name and somehow accidentally chose a phoney couple to be their honored guests for a weekend. Her personality and the way she could spin a yarn, whether real or made-up, made her a legend right here in our own state. I hope there are many videos out there for children who will never know her personally to enjoy.

My mother in law was a Media specialist who had ALL of her books and used to read the ghost stories to the grandchildren every Halloween.
I now have 'custody' of these treasured works, along with a Georgia cookbook which she wrote.

Mrs. Windham was an absolute joy to listen to. I heard her stories several times at the Jonesborough, TN National Storytelling Festival and at the Paramount Theater in Bristol, TN. I met Kathryn in the late 1960's when I was visiting Selma with my husband Glenn. It was Market Day and she came walking down the sidewalk towards us. She had such a presence. She and Jeffrey had visited our home in Georgia, and Jeffrey had the lights go out for a short time. He was fooling with us. We wrote each other through the years, and my grandsons got to meet her about a year ago. She was truly a gracious lady who made life so much more pleasant for everyone around her. I will miss her very much. I'm hoping Jeffrey and the Tin Man will be alright with her gone.

I loved reading the ghost stories by Kathryn and it had been one of my goals to meet her. I meet her two years ago at Montgomery's Alabama Book Festival. It was a treat and she will be missed. I am so very sorry to learn of Miss Windham's death. I am now living in Ohio and I have one of her books in my home. I often take it out to read her familiar stories of Alabama. I can "hear" her sweet Southern voice as I read each of her stories. From the time that I was a little girl, Miss Windham inspired me to always remember where I came from. In my Ohio home,which was built in 1891, I often feel the spirt of our resident ghost, Margaret. She, like Jeffory, is a kind ghost. Every time I hear something that I can not explain I think "well, it is just Margaret--she's a lot like Jeffory," and I can feel comforted. I know Miss Windham's spirt will continue to live in the imaginations of many generations to come. To the family, I am so very sorry of your loss.

Not just Alabama, but America itself has lost a treasure. I was blessed to meet, talk to, and get an autograph from her at the 2009 Athens Story Telling Festival. She lived as the epitome of Southern charm and grace. Her video "Kathryn: the Story of a Teller" is one of my most prized possessions. How I wish all of my students could have met her and listened to her weave her story-telling magic. Miss Kathryn, rest in peace.

I am a student at the University of Alabama and I was lucky enough to direct a documentary on professional storytelling that Mr.s Windham was kind enough to do the primary interview for. We only were allowed to spend an hour with Mrs. Windham, but it was a particularly insightful hour that led to a lot of reflection. She seemed to be suffering from the typical ailments of her age, but when she spoke, it was with a poignancy and clarity that showcased the vastness of her intellect, the brilliance of her wit, and the warmth of her heart. She was a national treasure and she will be missed.

Ms Kathryn was a distant relative of mine. She spoke at the University of West Alabama in 2005 when I graduated from Nursing School and I spoke to her there. I remember her speech vividly. I am a 17yr volunteer of the National Storytelling Festival and attended every performance she gave. I always said that when Ms Kathryn passed away I would feel as if I had lost a member of my family and I do. She was the kindest soul that I have ever met and my life is richer for having known her. Kathryn Windham was an amazing lady with a wonderful gift of storytelling. I served on the Azalea Storytelling Festival committee in LaGrange, Georgia for several years and had the pleasure of hearing Kathryn share stories in her special way. Kathryn Tucker Windham was my mentor and friend for more than 55 years. She was my Sunday School teacher at Church Street Methodist. Imagine a group of normally unruly teenagers completely spellbound by stories of the Bible!

My wife and I feel as if we knew Kathryn Windham personally, and when we would see her at the NATS festival, she was always just that friendly. My lifelong love for ghost stories began with Kathryn Tucker Windham's Thirteen Tennessee Ghosts and Jeffrey. I still remember insisting on checking that book out every time I could find it on the shelves at the public library. I loved her stories and still think fondly of those summer nights scaring myself silly with one of her books. My most heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

I saw Mrs. Windham at a storytelling festival in Jonesboro TN some few yers ago. She was my favorite storyteller. She was witty, funny, serious and an articulate speaker. I could listen to her tell of her life for hours. She was so pleasant to listen to. She will be missed I am sure of it for years to come Madelyn Cunningham Tennessee

Mrs. Windam was the first person to donate to a budding charity called the Freedom Chess Academy, eleven years ago. Her kind note and twenty dollars went long way toward giving me hope continue with my endeavor. I have read and listened to her stories for many years. I hope to sit by Mrs. Windom and share her, stories in heaven, some glad day.

I have been a fan of Mrs. Windham for many years and privilleged to have attended a storytelling at Wallace State in Hanceville. She was an amazing lady who was a true trailblazer. Our state has lost one of it's greatest treasures.

What a sweet Southern Lady. A true lady of the South. I could just listen to her voice all day long. As a retired school librarian, I can tell you that her stories of Jeffrey got my students to read and think! Her books are a treasure! Mrs. Windham - you were 'one of a kind' that we shall not see again for a long time. Thank you for sharing yourself with us for so many years! Oh what wonderful memories you have left behind with us!!!!!

The Jonesborough TN colors of autumn couldn't hold a candle to the brilliance that Kathryn brought to her stories. We were transported, having that comfortable front porch, rocking chair feeling, while listening to her sweet southern voice. We will miss her.

Our state has lost a great lady. I first heard about her from Mr. David Perkins from Anniston,AL when I was a little girl. One of his stories was published in one of her books. Everyone loved her Jeffrey stories and she will be missed. May she rest in peace and may God bless her family during this time.
