Charlotte Bloomberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 20, 2011.
MEDFORD, Mass (AP) — Charlotte Bloomberg, whose only son grew up to be a billionaire media mogul and then the mayor of New York City, died Sunday. She was 102.

She was a petite woman but a huge presence in the life of her son, Michael Bloomberg, who gave away millions of dollars in her name and set aside time from his harried schedule to call her every day. She died at her home in Medford, in the same house where the future mayor and his sister, Marjorie Tiven, were raised. The mayor announced her death Sunday evening and said that for him and his sister, their mother had been the center of their family. "Our mother's unimpeachable integrity, fierce independence, and constant love were gifts that profoundly shaped our lives and the lives of so many who knew her," he said in a statement. Charlotte Bloomberg was a local celebrity in Medford, where she served as co-president of Temple Shalom well into her 90s. Friends said she was animated, smart and a natural leader, like her son.

Rabbi Tami Crystal once told The Boston Globe that she was "the most beloved member" of the temple.

"Everybody adores Charlotte," Crystal said. "She's a ball of fire."

She was grandmother to Michael Bloomberg's two grown daughters and Tiven's three children. Tiven also works for the city as head of the Commission for the United Nations.

Those who knew Charlotte Bloomberg said she had the energy and sharp mind of someone years younger.

"She's not just a little old lady to sit down and have tea with," said Roy Belson, a friend who was also school superintendent in Medford.

She stood with her son on the steps of City Hall as he took his oaths of office in 2002 and 2006, although her health kept her from his third swearing in last year. During his first two runs, she was along for the ride on the campaign trail. During his 2005 campaign, she was a speaker at a Women for Bloomberg rally.

The proud mom told supporters that day that her son "knows which things are right, which things are good, which things he ought to do."

The mayor often mentioned her, and it was one of his favorite ways to dismiss speculation that he planned to run for president, saying playfully that he had no interest in it but that his mother would be tickled to hear that anyone considered him a contender.

In his 1997 autobiography, he described her as "a woman of liberal views and independent mind" who taught him the value of hard work, intellectual curiosity and ambition to achieve his goals. He remembers the importance she placed on the family dining together each night, and that she set the table with linens, nice serving dishes and proper silverware each night.

"She did for us what my friends' mothers did only for guests," he wrote. The message, he added, was: "We've got to take care of each other." Charlotte Bloomberg graduated from high school at age 16 and completed her schooling at New York University. After marrying, she stayed home to raise her children while her husband, William Bloomberg, worked as a bookkeeper at a dairy. He had a weak heart and died when Michael Bloomberg was in college, so she became the family breadwinner. "She taught me you've got to do what you've got to do, and to do it without complaining," Bloomberg wrote. After he founded the financial information company that bears his name, and began to amass his multibillion-dollar fortune, Charlotte Bloomberg was proud but didn't flaunt the relation. "Sometimes, when people say to her, 'Are you related to THE Bloomberg,' she'll say 'No,' just to avoid the conversation," he wrote.

She once told a reporter that she is most proud of what doesn't make headlines.

"The best things he does are the things that nobody knows about," she said.

Her wealthy son made many donations in his mother's name, including a reported $1 million gift to renovate Temple Shalom's community center, which was subsequently renamed The William and Charlotte Bloomberg Jewish Community Center.

In 2003, he traveled with her to Israel to dedicate a maternity and pediatric center at Hadassah Hospital in her name. To mark her 100th birthday, the family funded a children's center in her name at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Michael Bloomberg has also endowed Charlotte Bloomberg funds for various other Jewish causes, and he created a Charlotte Bloomberg professorship in the study of art history at his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University.

The subject, he said, "was something she's interested in and the school needed. To this day, she gets great pleasure knowing the Charlotte Bloomberg Professor is teaching, researching and enhancing our culture."

Charlotte Bloomberg's 102-year walk with divine lamp trimmed and burning and light shining brightly and brilliantly has been truly, graciously and humbly inspirational throughout these tumultuous years. As we here in hill country Texas watched, worshipped, waited and welcomed a favorite Son, friend, scholar, soldier back from 9/11/01 Pentagon assignment, the steadfast work and selfless words to heal, help and hold together community was comforted by the blessed faith & hope of your family living daily in the midst of longsuffering. Breath stilled and silenced of a steeled and stoic psalmist and songstress is sweet only in certainty of undeniable faith. Thank you for consistent goodness, exemplary planning and visionary hope. For me, Mrs Emma Louise Mullins Simmons (known often as Mrs. ELMS) lived each day in undeniable faith quietly entering eternal rest on Friday, just as Sabbath preparatory praises were ongoing. The family tradition to "Remember the Sabbath Day, to keep it holy" is balm for ever healing, hope and honor. King David Simmons Sr mourns the loss of his lifelong helpmate with love, joy and peace. Please pardon the delay of public sympathy message to The Bloomberg Family. The praiseworthy path to 102-year legacy has been noteworthy goal. ELMS', 81-year saint's, burden now is laid down. Trees die standing, saluting the sun.

You probably won't remember me, for I lived in Medford when we were young children growing up. I lived on Winthrop St. I remember one time going to your birthday party for a wonderful dinner. Dear Marjorie and Michael
I just heard today that your mother died yesterday. I am living in Western MA, near Amherst, but drove into Medford today for an appointment. As I drove by your old street, I felt such a sense of loss, but also of memories of growing up in Medford and Temple Sholom.
My memories go back to when your mother and mine, Ethel Goldman were Girl Scout Leaders together. They went on to co-lead both Hadassah and Sisterhood chapters many times at Temple Sholom. They led so well together.
The last time I was with your mother was the spring of 2008. My mother was dying of pulmonary fibrosis. The Cantor from Temple Shalom came to visit and asked what he could do for her. Her request was,"bring Charlotte" He brought her and these two old friends, one dying, and one about to celebrate her 100th birthday, talked for over two hours. What wonderful, giving women they were.
I read that the funeral is private, and that there will be a Memorial Service. I would like to be at the Memorial Service if possible. Will it be at Temple Shalom?

Dear Marjorie and Michael,
I spoke with my cousin, Ethel Nanes, a few moments ago and we reminisced about our wonderful Medford/Temple Shalom community. Our families knew each other well. I was privileged to spend quite a bit of time in your home in the mid-50's and early 60's and came to know your mother as someone who always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. She made me feel so welcome and was always involved in the world around her.(I do remember seeing the NY Times in the living room and thinking "I don't know anyone else from Boston who reads a NY newspaper!")

Please accept my sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy. May your Mom's memory be for a blessing.
I hope to speak with you soon.

MIchael and Marjorie--my mother, Evelyn Olans, who sadly died about twenty years ago, was one of Charlotte's closest friends. When Evelyn was too frail to go out, Charlotte would visit and they would regale each other with stories about Medford in the old days. Even though I lived through many of the stories, their version was so much more exciting than I remembered! Sometimes, when I was doing the grocery shopping for my mom I would run into Charlotte at the local Stop and Shop and would stop for coffee with her. She never stopped telling me how proud she was of you guys. She was one strong terrific lady, and was one of the reasons I most enjoyed my visits to Medford.

Dear Marjorie and Michael,

It is with sympathy and remembrance having been a neighbor on the same street in Medford and at the temple in the years I lived there that I send this to your family, those close to you and to you.

Your mother was a contemporary of my mother, and my mother was thrilled to see to see Charlotte on television or hear her mentioned after she moved from Medford in the late 1970s.

My mother passed six years ago, and it is never easy, no matter what age to lose the matriach.

With the challenges as a single mother, she carried forth with dignity and endurance.

Mr. Mayor, I always admired your interjections of your references to your mother while speaking that I heard many times.

If my sons represent me in the way you presented your mother, that will be my greatest achievement.

With condolences, Rosalie Isenberg Weener (daughter of Libby Shoreman).
