Harley Hotchkiss Obituary
The team confirmed the death of Hotchkiss, who had prostate cancer, on Wednesday.
Hotchkiss was part of the group that bought the Atlanta Flames and moved them to Calgary in 1980. Calgary won the Stanley Cup in 1989.
Hotchkiss, who served as chairman of the NHL's board of governors from 1995 to 2007, sold his minority stake in the Flames this season. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006.
Hotchkiss and NHL Players' Association president Trevor Linden tried to prevent a season-long lockout in 2004-05, but didn't succeed.

I am honored to have had the opportunity to work with Harley on the Alberta portion of the Man in Motion World Tour and have in my possession a hand written note which he was famous for; he was most aware of everyone's contribution and readily recognized that whether the person's last name was McDonald, Gilmour, Nieuwendyk, Roberts, Fleury or Pryakhin, Murzyn, or Sabourin! As another good friend H. Boots Cooper would say, “he was good people, and we need a lot more of him!�

To the Hotchkiss Family:
Harley touched the lives of many people in large and small ways that I am sure you may never be fully aware of. Harley wasn't the kind of guy who disclosed the kind things he had done for others. I first met Harley in a professional capacity and came to know him as a client and friend of our firm. Many years later when my son suffered a serious head injury. My wife and I were totally frustrated with trying to access help from our medical system. Harley provided some kind and helpful references and assistance that ultimately resulted in finding the people who could deliver the help we needed. I later called Harley to report the happy results and Harley typically gave the credit to others. Harley was a gentleman who made a big difference in the lives of our family and we will never forget the time he took to help us out.

Dear Becky and family:
Harley's memorial service was exceptional! It showed well the tremendous impact he had on his family, Canada and the fabric of what has become Calgary. Harley's personal involvement on that we achieved here in Calgary was phenomenal. Not only did he provide wisdom, vision and inspiration, he chaired and advocated the many fund-raising campaigns that made our research happen. Through him, the care of patients with neurosurgical disease has been considerably improved.
I will greatly miss the opportunity of seeking his opinion and advice. He will be terribly missed.
May you and your family cherish Harley's love for life, his exceptional generosity and the positive effect he had on the many many people he touched. Canada is better by all that Harley did during his remarkable life!

To the Hotchkiss family please know that our family's prayers are with you all. I remember the days at North Glenmore outdoor ice with Harley and my dad shoveling the rinks and sometimes refereeing. Aunt Becky and family, even though we didn't see Harley that often because of the distance, it was always a pleasure to be in his presence. We followed his success through the years and were always proud of our relative from Sandytown. Also, I have read many of the comments in this guestbook and everyone stated how Harley put others first. I can only reiterated this because just last December not knowing Harley was going through treatments at the time, I called him to see if I sent a Calgary Flames sweater out to him if he would get a few sugnatures on it for my son. I told him you have enough problems of your own right now just forget it and he insisted that I send it out. We will never forget his concern for others.

Becky, Our heart goes out to you. You and Harley were the lifemates and soulmates that we admired and looked up to beyond all others. Together you made your community and your country a better place in countless ways, perhaps the most important of which was the example you set for how to live and give while on this earth. My sincere condolences to the Hodgkiss familly. When I first started at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary as Vice President, Harley was the Board Chair and a great mentor. I still remember those days. He provided a great leadership style and was an excellent mentor. I will always remember him.

It is with great fondness I remember living next door to you in Lakeview all those years ago. I didn't know Harley well, but always admired him. It seems like only yesterday, that as a childhood friend of Paul, the eldest son of Harley and Becky, that I was spending the occasional Sunday dinner at your home; always kind and generous to everyone around them. I have fond memories of Mr.and Mrs. Hotchkiss traveling on Air Canada flights First Class, and being the kindest, most humble people aboard.I aspire to be half as good a person.

Mrs. Hotchkiss, Paul, Brenda, John, Richard, Jeff and all of your families;
I just wanted to let you know that Barb and I are both thinking of all of you at this most difficult time. Your Dad was truly one of a kind. I have always been so proud to say that I knew Mr. Hotchkiss because he was truly a kind and wonderful person who knew where he came from and he never forgot that.
While most people see him as the Flames owner, successful businessman and generous supporter of so many wonderful causes, I see him as a loving husband, a great father and a crafty practical joker. He always had a little something up his sleeve whenever I was around him.
However, where he made his biggest impression on me was how he treated Mrs. Hotchkiss. I always remember your Mom answering the phone on work days and it was your Dad on the other end calling her to see how she was doing and how her day was going. More importantly, I never, ever saw him treat her with anything but the utmost respect - and you deserved it Mrs. Hotchkiss because you in return were a wonderful wife and mother. I'm sure this is what allowed you to keep whistling those beautiful melodies all of the years I have known you.
I was also impressed with the great work ethic that he instilled in all of you. While he could have affored professional help to garden, mow lawns, wash cars, etc. it was always the kids jobs before they were allowed to goof around on the weekend.
My heart is full at this time because I was re-reading your Dad's book these past few months and I had a feeling that I should drop your Mom and Dad a note to say how much I enjoyed the book and the life lessons that it taught. I also wanted to say how much I appreciated their friendship, kindness and generosity over the years. Many of my most cherised youthful memories revolve around the Hotckiss family (ball hockey in the basement, days at the rink, thinking of ways to trick Lottie, trip to Flordia, driving Brenda to her wedding, did I mention ball hockey in the basement, etc., etc.).
I know that as proud of you are all of your father, I know that he was equally as proud of all of you. This is the legacy that will make him most happy - his family.
And to Mrs. Hotchkiss, I want you to know how much I appreciated you over my teenage years. You were a great example of what a great wife would be -an individual who was always smiling, always, happy and who sacrificed much for her husband and family (and you always carried yourself with such class and dignity).
I know that as time passes we see each other less frequently, but please be assured that I think of you all often and especially at this most difficult time.
Your Dad (and husband Mrs. Hotchkiss) will be rememered in so many different ways by so many different people. I feel so fortunate to have known him in ways that are so special and meaningful to me - he will always be a source of inspiration to me.
Once again, Barb and I hope that you will all be able to manage during this very difficult time and know that we love each and everyone of you.
