Wardell Quezergue Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 7, 2011.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Wardell Quezergue (kuh-ZEHR), the composer and teacher known as the "Creole Beethoven," has died. He was 81.

He died Tuesday.

Songwriter and pianist Allen Toussaint (too-SAHN') gave Quezergue his nickname. He describes Quezergue as a superb musician and band leader who raised the bar in rhythm and blues and rock 'n' roll, and who always inspired people to their best performances.

Quezergue's career included arrangements for Army bands, the Dixie Cups and Dr. John. Shortly before his death, he finished recording his newest composition - a setting of the story of Christ's death and resurrection for narrator, instrumentalists, soloists and small chorus.

Dad,

Today marks 13 year anniversary you've crossed over through the Heavenly Gates. It's such a better place for sure.

So much has been going on here that I know you, Mother, and our siblings are watching over us all. Thank you all for that!

There's not a day that goes by where I don't think of you or miss you or want to pick you up to take you places or just want to chat with you. "Your presence is still strong in my heart, even though you are no longer physically present"
Hold things close together in HEAVEN with the family including your brothers! Continue to let the music play!

You are greatly missed and forever loved!

Miss u Dad... and I LOVE U Very much!

MAY GOD BLESS U!

October 6, 2011

Dad,

One month since u've been gone..

Your battle is now over, no more tears flowing down your cheek,
No more pain, no more suffering,
Now you are no longer weak.
I still do not understand why this had to happen to you,
But I am proud to say you are my dad, The greatest man I ever knew.
You were always there for me and never Once made me cry,
Until the day you closed your eyes and had to say goodbye.
Now you are my Angel, so spread your wings out wide,
Please wrap them around me whenever you see me cry.
Our time together was memorable and God took you way too fast,
But those precious times we had together
Will forever and always last. (In my heart)

I miss you Dad...

We spent the better part of our day revisiting the immortal works of Wardell Quezergue. He was the most sought after arranger and producer in the local New Orleans music scene and beyond. He was also a musician, bandleader, and composer. His natural ability and God-given gift was considered genius by many. We are happy to say that we had the pleasure of working with him as his personal documentarians for a time that we will always cherish and remember. He was everything and more that people said about him. But, most of all, he was a wonderful human being. We extend our sincere condolences to Brian and the entire Quezergue family.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To Wardell's loving family: We hold you in our prayers & share your loss of this beautiful & special man. Too many stories to tell, having worked with Wardell musically over the years (Dave Bartholomew Big Band, Zulu Balls, etc.), but one story will always stand out: After Katrina, Wardell was the first person/friend/ New Orleanian we saw. When we were in Denton, Texas, a North Texas University jazz professor (John Murphy)said he found Wardell & would we like to see him? Of course we would! He drove us to Fort Worth's Red Cross Holding Center where Wardell was staying. Such a joyous reunion it was! We will never forget how his whole face lit up & how happy we all were to find each other! The Red Cross lady said that was the first time she saw Wardell smile since they had brought him there. We will always hold Wardell in our hearts & our thoughts. We were so privileged to know & work with him.

"No Tears Past the Gate"

Someone new has entered our eternal home above. The heavenly gate has opened wide to welcome the one you love.

We cannot help the tears that fall. Our hearts need time to grieve. It is God's call.

When an earthly life has ended and a loved one has to leave, yet even in the saddest time, we know our Savior lives.

We can trust completely in the promise that He gives that in a glad reunion with the Lord our loved ones wait to welcome us in joy with no more tears beyond the gate!

My deepest condolences to the family! Cherish those precious memories!!!

My condolences to the Quezergue family. Wardell was a dear friend of mine and a great talent that I had the privilege of collaborating with on several occasions. I will always remember him as the unsung hero of the New Orleans Music Scene. He brought tears to my eyes with his score for the song Mona Lisa on the The Neville's Fiyo on the Bayou album. When the seasoned string players stood up and hit their bows on the music stands to give Wardell his props I remember feeling so proud to be able to call him my friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of mourning.

Heaven....A glorious concert
is underway
Creole Bethovan
will be arriving
this very day

Angels and saints gathered
A social meet and greet
Suddenly, a light shines
spotlighting a special seat

Sitting with a smile
Ohhhhhh, looking so grand
The Maestro rises
Baton in his hand

Facing the orchestra of those
who once were
He shares a wink, a cue
directed at Clyde Kerr

Herman tapped on the drum
Raymond ever so passionately
swayed and hummed

Fess and Issac play keyboard tag
Sweet Emma yells
Pick it up boys
this is a drag

Wardell tells Tuba Fats
My friend, give em a blow
Ruth chants, aww right nah
jumping music start to flow

"Q" bobs his head
tap his feet
the rhythm is set
to a new beat

Music playing
Band swaying........

King Floyd bellows Groove Me
with exceptional flair
points to Marva
mouthing "dare"

She accepts, sho nuff
Faces Wardell,
curtsy and sings
Mr Big Stuff

Coming to an end
the band surprises "Q"
An appearance by
a special friend

Oh When The Saints
Wardell's welcoming song
played by
lengendary Louis Armstrong

Ellen Tatum, glitzy umbrella
in her hand
dancing away
leading the band

A big grin on his face
looking around
Wardell knows this
is the place!!!!!!

for you Parrain, luv

To wardell,s family. He was a great horn player and backbone of the xavier prep marching band in 1945. I had the pleasure of being a part of this band along with sybill morial and her deceased sister jean. We used to play together on rocheblave with virgil hardin when we were 10 years old. We both went in the service at the same time, and I went to chicago in 1955. I didnt see him again until 5 years ago when I saw him and his band play at the jazz fest. I hope that i have added to his legacy. Ferrell Daste

I was saddened when my brother called me to inform me of Wardell's passing. I am currently being treated at M. D. Anderson Cancer Ctr in Houston, Texas and will have to miss all services.

As talented as he was, and as beautiful a person he was two things I will remember about him the most, having breakfast with him in France during the Jazz a' la Vienne Festival; and serving on a panel to discuss music education with Wardell, myself and Wilbert Rawlins that was co-ordinated by Al Kennedy during Jazz Fest in NO about 3 yrs. ago. It was a special honor to be in his presence both times, and very cherished memories as it was so interesting to hear him talk about his life's experiences first hand, which he did so willingly, and so naturally.

My condolences to the family, and tell the Count, and the Duke and Teddy Wilson and Oscar Peterson to take a break, the "Creole Beethoven" is coming to "sit in" !

My thoughts go back to when I was a little girl and Wardell was leaving to go into the Army and I told him that I would write to him. I don't think he believed me at the time, but as soon as I got the address from his Mom, I did write to him and it was easy then telling him how much I missed him. But it is so hard now. Wardell was one of the best persons I knew. He was always there for everyone. God be with you my dear cuz and may you now rest in peace with no more suffering. Will always love you. God Bless you and may He watch over you and your family at this sad time. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I sang with Mr. Quezergue on his "Creole Mass" album several years ago with Symphony Chorus of New Orleans. I enjoyed working with him and learning from him. The heavenly choir awaits you, good sir.....give our regards to those who have gone before you.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
