Norma Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 20, 2011.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The trailblazing former chief judge of the U.S. District Court in Washington has died.

Norma Holloway Johnson was the first black woman to be appointed to the federal bench in Washington and she is the only woman ever to serve as chief judge at the court. She gained national prominence when she oversaw the grand jury investigation into President Bill Clinton's relationship with Monica Lewinsky.

The courthouse issued a statement Monday saying Johnson died Sunday at her brother's home in Lake Charles, La. Court officials said they did not know the cause. Johnson was born in 1932.

Johnson was appointed by President Jimmy Carter in 1980 and served as chief from 1997 to 2001.

The current chief, Judge Royce C. Lamberth, said Johnson's "groundbreaking legal career" was an inspiration.

Sincere Sympathy to Judge Johnson's family and friends. We worked together in the early 80's when she first became a Federal Judge, and she's always had a special place in my heart. She was such an inspiration and such a joy to work with. Rest in Peace, Judge.

I read Judge Johnson's obit in the NY Times which mentioned as she began her practice as an attorney for the federal government she was refused by the current Chief Judge to address the court because of her race. It's ironic that years later she would become the Chief Judge of this same federal court that refused her based on race.Judge Johnson was a pioneer not just for women but for her race also. May Judge Johnson's family find comfort & solace knowing she blazed a trail for many others to follow in her foot steps, making the transition much easier.

Nature

As a fond mother, when the day is o'er,
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
Still gazing at them through the open door,
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
By promises of others in their stead,
Which, though more splendid, may not please him more;
So Nature deals with us, and takes away
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay,
Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.

Dear Cousin Norma,

You have done God's will and served your country well, with dignity and integrity.

Your work and conscious commitment to what is right will always be remembered
by your peers and those young lives that you touched, that they too, will want to follow in your footsteps as a leader and a champion for justice.

Now that you are in heaven, you are once again reunited with those that have gone before you, especially your longtime husband Julius, a tower of power in his own right as a Federal Judge and our mom, Sister Baby.

God's Kingdom Is Yours,

The Thompson Family

I want the family to know that I am deeply saddened by the death of Norma Holloway Johnson. Although she is very well known in the Washington, DC area for her career as a judge, I fondly remember her as my 8th grade homeroom and English teacher at Taft Jr. High 1962/63. Her memory will always be with me as a caring, no nonsense teacher that, as I look back, made a profound impact in my life. Sincerely,
