Hal Kanter Obituary
The Writers Guild of America says Kanter died on Sunday. Daughter Donna Kanter tells the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/vXH8Ck ) he died from pneumonia complications at Encino Hospital.
Kanter wrote for the Oscars show for decades and was among show writers who shared Emmys in 1991 and 1992.
He created the 1968 NBC-TV series "Julia" starring Diahann Carroll, the first sitcom to feature a black actress as a professional woman rather than a domestic worker.
Kanter also wrote the 1952 Hope and Crosby movie "Road to Bali" and Presley's 1957 movie "Loving You," which he also directed.

Dearest Doris,Abbe,Donna,Lisa & Kanter Family;
I was watching the Oscar's and saw that Hal
had passed away back in Nov. and I was
deeply saddened to have heard that news. I've always
thought of Hal as a mentor and
father figure of sorts. From the time I 1st met himwhen Abbe & I did his One Act play at some event that took place outside that was a great experience & honor to have been asked by Hal and Abbe to be in it. Then about 5 yrs later Hal gave me my 1st pro acting gig on a couple of Bob Hope specials and then again on 2 "Chico and the Man" episodes. My heart felt condolence's & all my love.

To The Hal Kanter Family,
I don't know the Kanter's Family, but one thing, I understand and know that to loss a love one in death is hard on any family.
The Bible tells us at Isaiah 29:8,9 that death will be swallowed up and there will be no more tears.
Jehohah God and Jesus Christ will give the Kanter's Family comfort and peace.

The greatest thrill for me working on the 2011 Oscars was getting to know Hal Kanter. Hal became a friend of mine and remained so for ten years.Whether it was sitting in the audience with him for the Oscars or at the Academy watching an old Douglas Fairbanks movie, it was always such a delight to be in his presence.
I had been a fan of Hal's since childhood, Valentines' Day was a favorite TV show of mine. And the stories - Hope & Crosby, Burns & Allen, Elvis, Frank Capra, Sam Fuller, far too many to recount. But the man himself was his greatest work. A southern gentleman from Savannah, GA. He was encouraging, supportive, witty, kind and a great American original. My autographed copy of his autobiography is something I will always treasure. My sincere condolences to his family.
God bless you, Hal, I know the angels are now are laughing at your jokes and welcoming you home. We always knew we'd have to share you with God, we were just lucky to have you for 92 glorious years. There will always be a special parking space in my heart, where an eternal smile and a warm, happy glow reside, marked "reserved for Hal Kanter."

"Julia" used to be one if my favorite shows as a kid and I remember wanting a "Julia" Barbie in the worst way for my birthday....Had to settle for "Christie" I believe, another black doll....I cried because it wasn't "Julia"! Guess we couldn't get it yet in our small college town....Thanks for the memories Mr. Kanter....rest in peace!
