Johnie Kirton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 29, 2012.
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Johnie Kirton, a fullback with the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League, has died in Northern California, the team announced Tuesday. He was 26.

SaberCats owner and head coach Darren Arbet called Kirton a "great team guy and hard-nosed player."

The team says Kirton died Monday in Santa Clara, Calif. A cause of death was not released.

SaberCats players will honor Kirton's memory by wearing stickers on their helmets with his number 37 in their game Saturday against the Milwaukee Mustangs.

Kirton also played for the Chicago Rush and the Arizona Rattlers as well as the SaberCats during three seasons in the AFL.

Johnie, I did not know you but I knew of you. You were a senior at Jackson when I was a freshman. Needless to say I was intimidated but I now regret never introducing myself. I didn't even know you and I already knew who you were. You made a huge impact on this world and I will be sure to say hi this time when I see you on the other side.

Johnie, you left a big impact on the Chicago Rush family. Not because of your multiple record breaking acheivements, because of who you were as a person. Your infectious smile, & how you cared about everyone. Players, coaches, & fans have all become better people because of your prescence. For the short time I got to know you, I will always consider you my friend. We'll meet up again, & I'll bring some Candied Brats for ya. R.I.P. "Jumpin" Johnie

I went to Jackson high school with Johnie kirton and i will never forget the the person that he was. He was one of the nicest people i have ever met and an absolute beast on the field. I sat next to him in my first class ever when i was new as a sophomore, the way he would tear through the defensive line on the weekend was a feat i thought was impossible. The world lost a great person, Jackson lost a legend, and we will never forget the good times.... Sorry to see you go buddy, GO HUSKIES.

Johnie was more then just my running back and my tight end. He was my Friend, my mentee and my inspiration. Oh and don't forget one of the funniest guys on the planet. He was a man whom was battle tested and knew what it really meant to persevere. Never Scared, Never Backed down from a Challenge. That's the Johnie I know, that's the Johnie I love and that's the Johnie that will forever live in my heart.

Many of us hope to make a positive difference in this life before moving on to the next. Johnie accomplished that, and I can think of no greater tribute to him or to the family who raised him.
For me personally, he provided one of my most cherished retirement gifts when I left JHS in 2003, and he did it "Johnie style" - simply with words. He popped into my office to remind me that, while I was leaving, we would always share three things that made us soul mates: "a big smile, lookin' out for the little guy, and celebrating our birthday on St. Patrick's Day".
Well Johnie, we're still soul mates: I still smile a lot, especially when I think of people like you; I'm still watching out for the little guy, but will do it now for both of us; and I will toast you, one of the dearest young men I've had the pleasure of knowing every year on our B.D.

Our hearts goes out to the entire Kirton family. Our daughter's went to Jackson with Johnie. It has saddened us all that such a wonderful young man was taken too soon.

I remember being at a football game and after the game Johnie came to say hi to his family and what I remember most is him holding his baby sister and smiling down on her with such love, it just spoke to what kind of a human being he was. We'll keep all of you in our prayers.

A lost of such a great player that my son Donte Ellington was given the opportunity to know with his first year with the Sabercats. My heart truly goes out to his family, friends and team mates. We all should cherish the time we have with our love ones, we never know when it will be our last.

Doug, Heather, Dionna, Jocelyn, Dominique, and Jadyn...we were so sad and shocked to hear about Johnie. Your family always has been very special to our family. From the time we moved in to the neighborhood, our kids and your kids always hung out together and shared many special times. Johnie always watched out for everyone, not only your girls but our kids too. He was like a big brother to everyone in the cul-de-sac. He always had a smile on his face and warm hello on his many travels in and out of our little neighborhood. You are all in our thoughts and prayers through this very difficult time. If there is anything we can do, please do not hesitate to give us a call. Jim, Mary, Olivia, Kayley, Brenna and Carson Church

Words cannot express the sadness I feel. While I was on staff at Jackson High there times I would call upon Johnie. I was looking at times
for someone to have lunch with a new student,
whenever I asked him he was always there to help me out. See if you had lunch with Johnie it meant you had a new friend, no matter what grade you were in. My prayers are with Your family.

Oh Johnie Boy.
Although it seems too soon for you to leave us on Earth, I understand that your mission on Earth is complete.
God has plans for you taking care of his children. He could not have picked a better soul.
I am so happy to have known you and there will always be a special place for you in our hearts. I am not worried that you are gone, I know you are in good hands, my friend.
Grandma Ginger will miss her sexy baby but don't worry about her, we are there to take care of her.
You will continue to shine through the family as you always have.
Your baby girl will be just fine, we all love her and will make sure she is well taken care of! Just think, you can visit her anytime you want!
We expect to see you when our missions are complete. Stop by and say hi once in a while. Your smile always made everything ok.
Your Friend,

Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Kirton for giving me the opportunity to know your amazing son. I was a sophmore when he was a Sr at Jackson I played on the football team with him and one of the many things i admired about him was the fact that eventhough he was Johnie Kirton who had his own theme song!!! (Johnie be good!) and was just an amazing athlete with so much buzz around him he never got big headed and I felt so honored and cool that he was willing give me a nobody sophmore that he had practically just met a ride to school in the mornings (in his suburau lol)and home after practice. And I remember thinking when the buzz started getting big that he was going to get big headed but he never did he stayed true and I will always respect him and admire him for being the honest and kind spirited man that he is. you guys should be extremely proud...and again I thank you for raising him to be the man he has become.

He will always be a inspiration to me and off the field)and will forever be in my thoughts and memories and I look forward to seeing him when my time comes and I know that until then he is smiling down on us with that big grin of his. - Anthony Davis

I attended high school with Johnie. I was not close friends with him but I admired and respected him. I just remember walking past him in the halls of Jackson and he would say hey, and ask how I was doing. Now that sounds simple enough but I was a virtual nobody so for him to take a moment to do something so small meant a lot and made me respect and admire the person he was even more. Rest in Peace Johnie, you are gone far too young but as many have said you will NEVER be forgotten.

You were a special athete but a better father and friend. I may have been your coach for a short time, but you taught me more than you know. Family and football that is how we knew each other. We shaired a lot of similar things. You are the main reason why I am where I am this season. I will keep my promise to you about returning the favor. We will see each other again.

I haven't seen Johnie since high school, but we were both Everett boys and I wish I'd known him better. I remember he and I were in the middle of a fight between two friends, and when the room cleared out only Johnie and I were left, sharing a confused smirk and jokingly asking each other what the heck had just happened. I lost an older brother too, so you'll get through it. Johnie was a gentle giant and born leader, so he must leave some pretty large shoes to fill. That's just all the more reason that they'll be filled, because that's how he would have had it.

Heather, I will always remember the speech you gave at Jackson High Schools Mother's Tea, just before graduation, when you talked about yours and Johnie's relationship as a mother and son and how you called him your "Big Teddy Bear". And a big teddy bear he was. He touched so many lives and was a friend to so many. He will be sorely missed by so many. May you lean mostly on God for comfort to get you through this but also on your family and friends who you know will be there for you. May the best of memories always be held close to your heart. Johnie was the type of guy who united people in the locker room with is infectious personality and easy smile. He was a great player on the field with the versatility to play anything from RB to TE to DL.
