Darrel Akerfelds Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 25, 2012.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego Padres bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds, who pitched for five seasons in the major leagues, died Sunday pancreatic cancer. He was 50.

Akerfelds had been bullpen coach for San Diego since June 2001.

"Ak was an invaluable member of the Padres coaching staff," manager Bud Black said. "He was a loyal Padre to the end. Players and coaches were made better by Ack. He will be sorely missed."

He was diagnosed with cancer in December 2010. Last season, Akerfelds attended 148 of the 162, games despite undergoing chemotherapy. He was still with the team in the early part of the season before he finally stopped coming to the ballpark.

A Denver native, Akerfelds played professional baseball for 12 seasons and appeared in 125 major league games. He was 9-10 with 5.08 ERA pitching for Oakland, Cleveland, Texas and Philadelphia.

Akerfelds was a seventh-round draft pick of the Seattle Mariners in 1983.

As difficult as death is to bear up under we can find some comfort in knowing that death is a sleeping state (Jo 11:11) that will soon be removed (Ps 37:10,11,29)

To the Akerfelds family. Many times over the years I have bragged to people about your family and how lucky I was to grow up with and be around such an athletic family. I just told someone the other day that I took batting practice from a major league pitcher. I still talk about what a great coach Abes was. we all knew we were welcome at the Akerfelds house any time. I am very sorry for your loss. God bless all of you.

To Abe, Gloria, Danny and Duane, Darrel was an inspiration to everyone I ever seen him around. He was always so polite and respectful no matter who they were, or what they did. You pushed me in every aspect of my life. Whether it was the special times we competed against each other, or we're teammates in college. You were a Great Man Ak and it hurts that you are gone. I attended Columbine HS with Darrel and his brothers, I will never forget when myself and a friend were being harassed in the cafeteria by two girls and he came to our rescue and told the girls to back off and he walked us to the counselors office. We were just freshman and he was the popular athletic senior, he was our hero that day! My condolences go out to the Ackerfelds family!
